they just cant let it go, 1GHz n900

It's the exact same upgrade path as the Pandora. for $950 people are definitely paying for the ideals.

I'm part of the 56 people ready to pay 700€ for a neo900.

As WizardStan said, I'm not willing to pay that much for the phone alone, but for the ideals it brings with it. *

If pandora's successor come with a LTE option, neo900 will be clearly overpowered. But as of now, this phone project is really tempting.

-------------

EDIT :

* For example the ability to run/port the OS you want - not the one your phone maker want you to use - , to thinker with the hardware, …

Even if some binary blobs (GPU, 3G/LTE chips, camera, …) are still needed, it's still far better than most phones currently available.

And I like that phone design with an hardware keyboard.  :p

I mean, I ordered and upgraded my pandora when there were tablets available at lower prices with higher hardware specs… why shouldn't I buy a phone based on similar hardware than pandora's one (CPU, GPU, RAM, screen) in a similar situation (phones with better specs & lower price)?

Don't certain parts of the phone modules (to connect to cell towers) require binary blobs?

Anyway, I'm certainly interested, but unfortunately, I don't think I have that much money to spend on the phone at the minute. Will just have to keep an eye on this

This looks neat: A planned open source successor of the old N900 Smartphone built on the OpenPhoenux GTA04 Platform:

I am quite concerned about the legal status of this (as far as I understand they plan to cobble this together from N900 spare parts and modified GTA04 boards), but I'll follow it with interest nonetheless.

Damn, I searched for Neo900 before posting, but it's not mentioned in the other thread, so I didn't find it. I didn't see the targeted price as well, that's clearly way to pricey for a normal person, but understandable given the small run.

I personally do not think it is too late. The void the N900 left has still not been filled up by another vendor.

The people that want to buy it stuck to their N900 for a while, maybe theirs broke, maybe not. Some could have tried the android experience, and may want to go back to a better N900... There are a lot of N900 fanboys out there.

As for me ... I just stick to my old N73 for now...

The N73 has more battery life than the Pandora (standby), has better keys (although less), has a real joystick and camera's and the internal speakers are just as good. Audio recording quality and video recording is better than on the Pandora. And has lots of apps (http://www.dailymobile.net/category/applications-s60/page/43/)

And it runs Zelda! http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Zelda_Mobile  (maybe I should put it in the port request?)

However, it is falling apart though... *sigh*

Where are the physical gaming controls?
Strategically placed below..

Too bad they had to get rid of the phone features to put in game controls.

@Shenmue: Hey, you are right... why did they not use the alternative layout

Maybe because of the touchscreen? (lots of new games use keys on the touchscreen itself)

1. It will be overpriced as hell.

2. it will be delayed as hell.

3. it will sucks in general because:

"...basing efforts on an already existing, mature and stable free platform - the OpenPhoenux GTA04..."

They will use TI DM3730 (GTA04)  and the software runs awful on it. The only difference is that they will put 1Gb RAM, which in that case means nothing.

"3.5" TFT, 800x480, resistive" Srsly? -  3.5" RESISTIVE in 2013/2014 ? for a phone which will be priced around 500-600 Euros ?

UMTS HSPA, UMTS HSPA with CDMA, and LTE are 3 different choices ? WHY?

No N standart WiFi ?

And so on and so on...

These guys are perfect example why 99% of all open source projects related with some kind of hardware are doomed.

^ and you are arguing this on the Pandora forum which spec wise is almost the same as the 1Ghz Pandora..

Our project is doomed!! I may as well burn my 3 Pandoras.
