Gplynx Development Suspended

Take the break, take as long as you need. Beats of rage and gpdrive rock will surely rock my socks till you get back. Even if you dont feel like programming again. Thanks alot for what youve done recently..good luck with any endeavor you decide to undertake in your freetime.

Shame for us, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Hopefully you'll return to your GP32 stuff refreshed with new ideas, and sort out GPLynx a treat...

The only reason I'm not crying into my cup of tea is that I finally completed Rampart on the Lynx last night - that island level is a total bitch...

I'm elated but also feel empty cos I'll probably stop playing the Lynx now...

Anyway, good luck Squidge...

It's due to a number of things, mainly more involvement with family and spending the little time I have with my other handhelds, which include the Zodiac and PocketPC. There's a chance that the Lynx emu comes out for the Zodiac first and the GP32 later due to the increased processing power of the Z (I can offload a lot of Susie code onto the Z's Imageon processor for example, leaving the main processor to handle Mikie).

Thanks for the comments by the way, I didn't think you'd miss me that much :)
Just a suggestion, Please put in analog sensitivity adjustment in the Zodiac version. The analog stick just plain sucks with the default setting on the Zodiac. It is much too sloppy.

Due to less free time at and various other things that I consider a "higher priority", all of my current GP32 development projects are suspended until August/September time this year. Maybe sooner, maybe later - I don't know yet.

I will continue to use the forums in the same way as before, but will do no more development until Aug/Sept (not that I've done that much on the gp32 anyway!).

Anyway, thought I'd let you know rather than leaving you for a while filling up my PM box with status requests :)

That's a shame...
Have you release the source code on a page anywhere?

I would advise only returning to it when it becomes fun again... there's nothing worse than wanting to finish something off and hating it... it kills the project totally in the long run

I am a bit confused. I saw you posted recently on Zodiac Gamer that you are still working on the Lynx emulator, and were going to let Yoyo put it in his Zodiac emu. But if you suspended it how is that going to work out? Or are you just stopping GP32 development in favor of the Zodiac?

LOL!

Aw no. You're one of the best coders on the scene Squidge and you'll deffinately be missed. Hope you still post occasionally, as you say you will :D. You're one of the more informed posters around B).

Would you be interested in taking a stab at finishing Lynx one day? That would be pretty awesome :)

Not really. (If I was doing Atari Lynx I'd start from stratch with my own 6502 emu rather than building on someone elses code.)

Stop doing Zodiac things people, just make a GP32 emulator for the Zodiac then concentrate on GP32 stuff :D
I'm already writing a GP32 emulator for the Zodiac so I can sell my GP32. At 200Mhz, it can emulate a 133Mhz GP32 at full speed.

;)

Actually, I'm just kiddin', hence the smiley. I do think it's possible however, but Ive not investigated it enough yet.

But since most GP32 software is emulators, therefore it's likely that the SNES etc. will already be emulated on the Zodiac by the time someone writes a GP32 emu. Therefore, the only point to writing a GP32 emu for the Zodiac would be to play GP32 commercial games. Bad Squidge, encouraging piracy like that!! (P.S. That last bit was sarcasm)

Hmm... should be... both use arm processors, not much to emulate here...
And the rest could be enough to emulate the system.
Would actually be interesting to know :)

There's a few reasons why I don't sell emulators or do donations, Zodiac-style:

Firstly I really think it's wrong to sell old other peoples IP for cash, unless it's officially licensed which I *always* always try to do with all of my emulators (and usually fail).

Secondly because of the legal mess that can ensue. You have effectively started a business selling copyrighted material, and companies do NOT like that. Think pirate CDs.

Thirdly, because of my work contract. I work for a games company and in my contract it doesn't allow me to work for anyone else. The Zodiac dev would definitely be considered a job in my mind. I might ask the boss as some point whether I could do some stuff, but I imagine he wouldn't be keen.

And finally, no offense but the amounts involved are not really that large :)
A few hundred pounds is really nothing compared to the time I've taken working on some of my emulators. It really not worth getting a few tenners for the legal risk. I'm really not in it for the money, it's an interesting hobby which takes my mind off my real job :)

Really, you should hang onto your cash :)

Yeah I know what you mean. I was kind of joking though, I really doubt you would actually do a GP32 Lynx emu for $20.00, unless you just wanted to do it for fun.

As for legal issues I doubt that anyone would really go after you for making a Lynx emu for the GP32 as the real Atari isn't even around anymore. Plus the GP32 is not popular enough to cause anyone too much concern.

Yes, but even though both systems use arm processors, it's not possible to run the gp32 natively on the Zodiac, like the gba emu is going to run on the gp32. So that means emulation of the processor itself. Personally, it now seems like it'll run a gp32 at speeds more like 33mhz than 133Mhz.

Maybe there's another trick I've not found yet, but it doesn't seem too good at the mo.

I'm not interested in emulating gp32 commercial games, and would probably put something in the emu to cripple commercial games if the emulator ever worked anyway. I was just thinking of using it for some of the quality homebrew games.

Well, you'd get the Wolfenstein 3D port working at least lol (25MHz iirc - had to be clocked down since it ran waaaaay too fast lol)
