Xgp - First Pictures

The BLACK Gpx2 IS very very appealing to me. The brown is is just as ugly as this thing. But i gotta admit the screen is insane.

Dave C was complaining a lot and for the GPX2 too. Mainly for the 32 MB Ram but they have fixed it so he must calm down because it is just a prototype and everything could change at the end just like everything have changed for the GP32, there were so many protoypes some of them were only 66 Mhz but at the end they have met our demands and I believe that the same thing will happen with XGP and is happening with GPX2.

Why oh why don't they put in a full (albeit small) keyboard similar to a chat board rather than just a number pad?

I also think the swivel-screen design is good thinking for placing the device for watching movies, or using the keypad, or leaving it closed. Very good thinking. Laptop swivel hinges have come a long way. I hope it holds up.

I love the circular pattern of the 4 buttons on the right - makes it very cool for two player gaming :). Also great for complex control systems such as controlling a mech and a gun turret at once, or moving/strafing and looking around at once.

Hey, that looks real nice to me. I doubt it would seem too bulky in your hands, I always thought the psp looked the size of a lynx until I actually held it in my hands. ...And look at the size of the daughter usb socket, it looks even less swamped on the xgp than it does on the psp.

I think the important thing is the screen takes up most of it's face, I can't justify calling it "bulky" when most of the real estate is given to a wonderful big screen.

The screen flipping idea is fantastic!!! imagine if below the screen hid a blueberry style keyboard instead of that numpad B) .

a 16:10 screen with anti-aliasing is no different from playing snes on a widescreen TV. Except a little less stretched and a little less blurry. Does that mean I'm not a purist???

My memory of the 8-16 bit systems is one of smooth, slightly blurry TV graphics - NOT of pin-sharp CRT displays.

I've got to say, the first day I ever fired up an emulator on a PC display and played punchout, I thought "Jeees, was this really as blocky as this???" (after of course, thinking "OHH MYY GOOOODDDD IT WOOORKS.... PUNCHOUT ON PC - AND IT@S FREEE!!".... Ahhh, memories ).

In short. I like. :)

The XGP they show in the picture from the "Unveiling" is just as thick as the GP32 but now it's wider and has a flip top swivvle screen. It's 1/3rd thicker than the PSP which may be weighty but is very sleek. The Renders are shot and an angle that makes it far more thin and more like the PSP than the mock ups we're seeing in the real pics.

And seriously has anyone yet seen this post because there's a lot of people not seeming to acknowdge it:

DaveC- Why dont you put all your gripes into a single thread this way you can simply post links to each complaint every time you feel like saying it again. It'd save you a lot of typing time and stop pissing off people who generally agree with you on several of your repeated dislikes.

Cut DaveC some slack.

Every scene needs at least one hardnosed critic, and DaveC's criticisms do usually make sense.

Well that may be your opinion but I like 1:1 much more than all distorted.  To me the distortion makes things look squashed and the pixels fuzzy and irregular, I don't know how you would actually think that looks good
Blending turned on.

Blending doesn't correct distortion, it attempts to hide it with blurr. Look at DrMD at 1:1 on your GP32. Look at the sharpness of the pixels, very detailed. Now look at SNES all stretched and filtered, it is not as crisp, it is fuzzy. I guess I like the sharpness as I had all of my old systems hooked to an Amiga RGB and Sony PVM RGB monitor. The GP32 screen at 1:1 looks closest to that. Those filtered screens look like systems hooked up through an old RF switch (yuck).

By the way you can still filter an image that is 1:1 if you want (if you have the GPU that supports such things). I think it looks like crap but if you like it it can be done. With a 4:3 320 x 240 screen at least you have the choice to view the screen sharp if you like and at a decent size. With a 16:9 480 x 272 screen you are kind of FORCED into a stretched and filtered screen because the image is too small without it. I don't like to be forced into that, I like options.

The screen size comparison, the XGP screen is second. The screen is wider but is actually shorter than a GP32 screen.

PS: you may want to add these images to the GPnewbie site of yours which is actually pretty good. Grab them from this post. I will edit out after you take it because they are big images. It would at least give noobs or anyone a good comarison. Plus you can put the other showing actual screens of GP32 emus. GeePee grabs are OK but they don't give a real indication of how games look on the actual hardware.

I am not convinced of those elongated buttons for shooters and stuff like that. May be prone to sticking. Also that config for platformers is dubious. Hitting jump and punch looks tricky. I like the button layout of the GPx2 better. You can still do strafe etc. The GPx2 buttons are kind of laid out like the N64 buttons which were good in Goldeneye and Turok.

Hmmm acrylic buttons and shiny black case.. I wonder where they got THAT idea from

B type is thiner then A type. and the rendered model's edge is thiner B type.

@Dave

I know it's not as sharp stretched, and I understand what you're saying. Personally, I actually like the softer look that you get from the blending though. And yeah, it distorts it a bit stretching (16:9 or most anything, really), but it usually doesn't bother me. I agree the GPx2 screen is the better choice for emulation, but I'm just not as opposed to a widescreen as you it seems. :p

And yeah, I wanted to add those images you made, but in all the rushing to get it together I forgot to do so. I saved them, and they'll be up soon. Thanks! :)

I don't care about 3D, that is what the PSP is for. Playing stuff like MD and NES, Neo Geo just plain sucks with analog. It is very sloppy and imprecise and you hit diagonals when you don't want to constantly to the point of frustration. I know because I had a Zodiac and played emus with the analog and it was crap.

Optimism? I just go by what I see. If I don't like it I say it. I know alot of you don't like it but that is too bad. If I see something that is a potential problem like the analog, screen, etc I can't just pretend it doesn't exist and be "optimistic", that is insanity, sorry. ... I am just suprised how many like this thing with the mentioned issues, I guess not too many have tried emus with an analog yet. I just hope the dev community doesn't go with this one because of the above mentioned concerns.

You just don't seem to get the point, do you?
There is much more than just emulation, there is no videogame system targeted only at emulators. Ever learned to make compromises, to be tolerant?
And no, I won't go and buy me a PSP instead, for several reasons. From the pictures you posted you seem to be extremely emulator fanatic.

It depends on the programmer to use the analog stick to work perfectly for digital input emulation. It's no problem to do. But you should send your complains to the emulator author instead.

What issues? What concerns? You sound like if you have discovered some major system malfunctions or something, but the system is okay and you just don't like it, that's all.

I personaly will be getting a GPX2 but I have to say if I could afford it I'd buy an XGP too.
one thing. I have no Idea why no company or indepent dev has had the idea of turning a console upside down so you could use the buttons to strae and the stick to aim.

hm those new pics look nice :) (the blue ones :) )

but the gpx2 has priority ! after i got that one i might get a xgp too :)

but im sceptical about the digital tv and phone functions.... would be really sad if they worked only in korea :/

edit:

A comparison between the nds, psp and the xgp:

The number pad is supposedly for wireless chat, but they've said they might just use a touch pad instead.

RockinB - What DaveC is saying about PSP is that when you take this system and put it against that type of commercial power house it pales. There's no gaurantee that the 3D aspects of the system will ever see their full potential utilized if all they have are tiny independant publishers with budgets as small as they had on the GP32. Because of this, if it's not going to be Homebrew friendly it's a very redundant and useless system unless they find some new niche.

i don't like the shiny psp plastic covering that it's going to use..i don't want to clean my system as much as i play it.

Well what I am saying is that if you want commercial games the PSP is a much better option and kind of makes the XGP redundant. You want a widescreen (which is BIGGER on the PSP by the way), an analog stick and 3D capabilities? Get a PSP not only does it have all of those things but is has better versions. The PSP has an analog AND digital control, bigger screen, more powerful CPU, better 3D hardware, WiFi, PLUS has the support of industry giants such as EA, Konami, etc. The XGP does not.

This means that such a small niche system will get its identity from homebrew and yes, emulators. Like it or not emulators are the main reason we buy devices like the GP32. Like I said if we just wanted commercial titles we would buy a PSP or DS for that. For these emulators the GPx2 is a much better choice. It has digital control, 4:3 screen with resolution that matches emulated systems well, and 2D GPU which may help with emulation even if only used to blit pixels to the screen. It is a better fit for emulation than any handheld which gives GPx2 a reason to exist. The only thing I can see holding back the GPx2 is the low clock speed, but we don't know yet if the GPu will be effective for emus or if it can be overclocked. If it can do those things it WILL be the best emu handheld, much better than XGP.

Analog controls have too large a throw distance for precise digital control. If you narrow the "dead zone" to eliminate excessive throw distance you will hit diagonals acidentally often resulting in loss of control. Plus analog controls lack tactile feedback. It just isn't as good for games the were designed for digital.

If the Xgp has more power than the Gpx2... Hell I´ll buy the Xgp because i won´t buy a system with minor power like the Gpx2 ok it looks good designed but you won´t get any use just of the good design, it is the hardware which makes it good. So if this Xgp is opensource and has as good specs as the Gizmondo (or a little less) i´ll buy it. Dosen´t making sense for me buying a product with minor power
just because the standard neogeo pocket ripped design Gpx2 damn this f**k thing

strange that they have decided to try to disguise the console by making it black when it should be brown- the colour of a turd.
