More importantly. Whens the first planned release for Vista based Virii. Want to ensure I am well clear when all hell breaks loose.
Day 1 I presume, the prats normally like to make an impact as soon at the worst possible time.

Should be out late 2006. I'd expect a jump comparable to the jump from 98 to Me, not from Me to XP.
Oh come on?!

I think that vista will be a lot more secure than any previous versions of windows as it's employing the same kind of strategy that linux does. i.e. You should never be logged on as administrator, but if something requires admin privileges, a little box will pop up asking for the admin password, then that process, and only that process will be granted admin rights. In theory, nothing will be able to install itself on the machine without you being asked for the admin password, and this will obviously notify you that something is going on.

Bye bye Windows viruses and spyware I should think :)

Er I don't think so, ME was the biggest piece of trash since DOS 4. Also ME was just in essence an updated 98, it still used FAT32 and had soo many bugs I'm amazed it ever got released.

I think the better comparison would be 98 to XP as Vista is so different from XP. it may look like XP on the surface, but that's about it. The technology driving it all is completely different.

And by that I mean it will be as big a jump as from ME to XP.

No it's not XP at all, when Vista was still Longhorn, they tried building on XP technology, but it was too buggy, so they scrapped it and built it on Server 2003 SP1 instead, and I do think I already mentioned this point in an earlier post. You need to get facts correct before making brash statements like that.

Edit:

Just thought I need to point something else too, the GUI was going to be VERY different from the current XP style, but because they didn't want to annoy present consumers by giving them something totally unseen, they curbed the GUI back to resemble XP, so looking at vista you probably would think it was built on XP tech, but it ain't.
One thing I will say is, you are going to need a good graphics card, to run Vista efficiently, as the GUI is not bitmap based, it's vector graphics, that means EVERYTHING is scalable :)

LOL knowledgable. Vista had lots of features that made it more comparible to an OS like linux, unfortunately most of those features have been removed. Unfortunately its still a long way to go.

You are as a matter of fact a little bit wrong, Vista uses a system called LUa which means Least-privileged User Account. users will be running as non admin or low privileged status while being able to easily run applications requiring more privilege as necessary. It doesn't employ the same technology as Linux, but uses a form of access tokens and it has a basic execution model for running applications under Access Tokens. By default users will no longer be required to run as admin in daily practice. My earlier post was a simplified version of this, but if you want to go technical I am happy to :) .

Edit:
Please don't think I am saying Vista is aiming to replace Linux, as even I am not that stupid. I myself am experimenting with moving my NT based Servers to Ubuntu. I just think that Vista could be something good. If Microsoft get the security right, it will thwart them darned hackers and the scum who make a profit from spy ware. And in the process make my life a LOT easier!
