Windows 10

I don't get the hate for Metro. I guess cause my only Windows devices are touch based. I actually think MS did a really good job laying out an interface that scales between the two pretty well, but I can understand the frustration when they got rid of legacy elements like the start menu.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they have done with 10.
The problem with Metro is that you have two interface clashing... getting rid of the full Metro interface and get back to desktop with a start menu Metro-ish seems to be a nice compromise...

Oh, wow. Windows 10 is a freaking privacy disaster (Link: Jupiter Broadcasting, Tech Talk Today, Episode 198).
What a surprise! ;D

From the article quoted there:

"The new policies take effect on 1 August and there are a few unsettling things nestling in there that you should be thinking about if you’re using the company’s services and software.

[...]

Sign into Windows with your Microsoft account and the operating system immediately syncs settings and data to the company’s servers. That includes your browser history, favorites and the websites you currently have open as well as saved app, website and mobile hotspot passwords and Wi-Fi network names and passwords.

[...]

Turn on Cortana, the virtual assistant, and you’re also turning on a whole host of data sharing: [...] "your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and how often you interact with them on your device. [...] your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more.”

Lots of things can live in those two words “and more.” Also note that because Cortana analyzes speech data, Microsoft collects “your voice input, as well as your name and nickname, your recent calendar events and the names of people in your appointments, and information about your contacts including names and nicknames.”

[...]

The updated terms also state that Microsoft will collect information “from you and your devices, including for example ‘app use data for apps that run on Windows’ and ‘data about the networks you connect to.'”

Windows 10 generates a unique advertising ID for each user on each device. That can be used by developers and ad networks to profile you.

[...] When device encryption is turned on, Windows 10 automatically encrypts the drive its installed on and generates a BitLocker recovery key. That’s backed up to your OneDrive account.

Ewww, that doesn't sound nice. Let's hope there will be guides and tools out soon to get rid of all these spy tools within Win 10. I don't need Cortana or have a MS account. But so or so you should always wait half a year or more before using a new Windows version. ^^

I know this is quite trolling, but anyway:

Just don't use it if you have problems with Microsoft selling your data to finance it's operating system.

Some people don't have a choice... Some people don't even *know* there's a choice.

[...]By default, you're a P2P node, that means you can download updates not only from the Microsoft servers, but from other users as well, you'll also upload data so others can download from you, like Torrents, you get it?, the bad thing is that you can't control the bandwidth it will use, by default it eats all of it and interferes a lot when playing online[...]
Well, if this is true M$ will at least get an entry in the The Guinness Book of Records for building the biggest botnet in human history.

Uhh, this is really dark:

Let's hope that more people will embrace Linux now.
Seems like 2015 is the year of the ReactOS desktop :p

What the &$#)@ is MS thinking? This, combined with the NSA scandals, can be enough to drive even the masses away from Windows.

While I don't think Linux distros will actually fill the gap (I wish they would), Apple and Android can certainly benefit massively from this.

That's a good case scenario.

I wish i didn't, but i doubt people even care about these stuff or know that there's a refuge in an alternative called "Linux".

As long as the masses gift all their personal and lots of their business information to Facebook and Google for further trade, I think that your doubts are justified.

I'm afraid you guys are going to be right on this one. Somehow the competition never manages to properly utilize the fuckups that MS makes at least every other version.I would like mass media to hammer the privacy issues with this version a bit harder. The complaints are mostly restricted to tech-sites.

Jamie Oliver did a good job with the NSA stuff, but even if you tell people that Win10 may be the same thing only on the OS level, some of them just won't listen anyway.
John Oliver (Jamie Oliver is a cook). There will always be people who "have nothing to hide" (a.k.a. idiots, in my not so humble opinion), but that doesn't mean this message is not worth repeating.
Things are getting WAY out of hand. People need to be made aware of this and we need to start acting on it before it is too late to stop it (if it isn't already).

Blimey, how does this keep happening with me?

Anyway, i agree with most of what you say. But unless someone lets us know of a really efficent way of presenting the situation to people, i think it will be quite difficult to break through to many of them.

As long as computers don't ship with Linux in-stores, this is unlikely to change. The number of people who are unable/unwilling to try installing a new OS just because they don't want to mess with their computers is very large.

Even then, most people just don't care, especially if it something no money is charged for

Why has this thread become a m$ hate fest? I think windows 10 is pretty neat so far, if people are lazy, unwilling or scared to update (for free) or prefer linux based OS that's cool but no need for all the hate.
