GBC 32mbit max carts should be more than enough for RPGs, I'm surprised there are so little of them. Is it because of the small screen? Even sadder no one has completed a FAQ for some of the popular Japanese RPGs.

Because the gameboy is a handheld. With a handheld, companies usually try to create games that are easy to pick up and play in short bursts. RPGs are not those sorts of games. Also, the small screen and resolution would make it difficult for game designers to fit all the graphics, text, and interface items you would need in an RPG (stats screens, HP, information about all the party members, etc.) That said, there ARE quite a few RPGs for the original gameboys, and honestly the only ones that seemed to take off were the Pokemon games, mostly because you were collecting pokemon, and you could save anywhere.

So happy to play GB and GBC and GBA games because I never owned these handhelds when I was young. It's like "if you haven't seen it, it's new to you."

That does not explain how the DS and GBA have so many RPGs. Small screen resolution is no excuse when all turn based RPGs can be reduced to text due to their game mechanics. It can't be that difficult to fit all graphics, text and interfaces needed for an RPG if a small company like Atlus can do it over and over again. You cannot save while in battle in Pokemon. I think the lack of RPGs has more to do with the era rather than the console limitations. The Game Boy Color was in the 5th generation. The 5th generation was when Square Co. jumped ship to Sony.

Most likely the era and also the fact that RPGs don't make very good handheld games that or Nintendo didn't realize that some people sit at home playing their handhelds on their coach. GBA has a ton of good RPGs so something changed between GBC and GBA that made developers decide to make RPGs.

Could be. N64 had even fewer than GBC. Another issue is that GBC was really dated hardware that people probably didn't want to try a lot of new things on, so you'd get RPGs that were more in line with what you'd see on the NES, which is a style that had fallen out of vogue by then (of course there were some exceptions).

Yes that list is on gamefaqs too, I just have to select GENERAL
http://www.gamefaqs.com/gbc/list-257

I also notice all RPGs are Japanese made. Not a lot English FAQ available unfortunately for many of the games. I doubt someone will do one at this stage. Although I do hope someone still can make a translation patch

Sigh, retrogamers are such a small minority.

Is there an online class where I can learn Intermediate and Advance Japanese? I know the basics, 2 yrs in college.

There was more than I thought! :)

Lot of games, it's interesting to see that GBC stand out for less time than the original GB but had more RPGs.
I think that there are times when things go better and times were they almost disappear. Let's think at the boom of the turn-based war games and adventure games on PC in the nineties and now the scene completely taken by the FPS. Maybe Starcraft II could revert the trend to turn-based war games?

One of the reasons is that Nintendo started targeting adult audience with GBA where the GameBoy generation was mainly targeting youngsters.

Also, there are translations for most of those games that are Japan only.
