all I can find is 1TB, and if I try and search for higher capacities nothing shows up. Is there anything higher than this in capacity, as far as external HDDs go? I'd like to back up all of my shit that I have on my computers and my discs lying around, so it's all in one place. I don't think that 1TB is enough, scarily.

1 TB is rather a lot - the biggest consumer drives are 1.5TB, and some 2TB drives are popping up (in servers mainly). You don't get drives bigger than that simply because technology isn't good enough to get any more capacity on a platter.

If you really need more than 1TB external, consider getting a 2-drive enclosure/portable RAID array, but I really doubt you need that much.

Over a terabyte is a reserved guess, 'cause I have 850GB of roms alone, and something like 60 movies (please bear in mind I legally ripped all of these by myself ;) ) I suppose if I wait 5 years or so then there will be 2TB drives on the market. :)

Nonsense. You are doing something horribly wrong. Are you saving your DVD's as Raw output or something?

oops, just checked, my movie files are in between 700 - 800MB.

LOL 850GB of roms? Jesus, how many files is that? If you ever get caught, you goin to jail for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time :p
I have 1400 PSX Isos, 200 dreamcast isos, something like 1300 DS roms, 2700 GBA roms, and some more. Can someone do the maths for me to calculate just how much I'd get fined and / or get sent down for? :p

-20 years. It's actually so long that time has over flowed and started counting back up again but not quite got back to the beginning of the universe.

Seems be be more of a data junkie, likes to collect all known games to complete the set. Like that childrens TV fad - Pokemon - Gotta catch 'em all!

Oh boo hoo, you can't find a hard drive big enough to back up your illegally downloaded, shitty games collection. Like you even play 5% of those games, you just downloaded them for the sake of it. I hope you fall down the stairs while carrying your external HD so you break your neck and corrupt the hard drive simultaneously.

You might want to consider a hdd dock for backup, that way you can just swap hd's like ordinary removable media. I don't have one, but I plan on getting one.

well, actually dickhead, I play only around 2%, and what's with the hating, have you had a domestic recently? or perhaps you're an angry games developer who hates people like me, who play games you don't even make money from anymore. Besides, I only want to preserve the history of video games, who doesn't want that?

you're a fucking idiot, Rico.

beleive it or not, hobbyists of collecting every rom known to man are "Pokérom masters" referring to the "gotta catch 'em all" thing.

Do you really need all of those? You must have some really, really terrible games there.
yep, some really terrible games. I mean fucking disgraceful. like whoever-made-them-should-be-shot bad. I've still discovered some great games in my shitty collection though. *cough* Rico *cough*

but Ricos comment was no more justified than mine.

Orkie, do you really hate my so much that you'll pay £0.50 to anyone who permanently bans me first? I mean, that's a lot of money. :p you must have a lot of time on your hands. students, eh...

Why all the hate, he asked a reasonable question, and a good technical one at that.

The answer is that the highest capacity external HDD is theoretically infinite ;).

Try looking for a NAS device that can hold between 2 and 5 drives, it may be able to connect as a mass storage device over USB, or it may use Gigabit ethernet, which would be fine.

Western Digital has a couple stand-alone USB enclosures that hold 2 drives.

If on the other hand you need a single drive only I don't know what to say, single drives will be more expensive.

(If I was going to save movies I would hold the data in the original form, and that is because I would use up-conversion on a 1080p projector at about a 200" 16:9 screen size. If you aren't familiar with that quality then don't bother arguing the point.)

I think you are seriously treading into "mini home server" territory, or big NAS territory.

I will look for some for you and get back (It might be a while, I am out on the beach at san francisco, and the sun might burn off the fog soon :) )

There is a dual drive 2TB for $500, and a $1000 4TB in a network Storage (NAS)
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=340
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=501

If it was me I would make my own with FreeNAS and put it in a small box with a Intel Little Valley ITX board (D201GLY2 is Core2 processor for $65-75 !!), use a standard ATX PSU at ~400watts to get 4 or so hard drives spinning.

To save more money use an old PC as this sort of server.

I am afraid that this won't be much help if you want to backpack your collection, but an ITX board is pretty small and with a slimline 3 drive case it might be possible.

Yes, I do dislike you that much. And no, I don't have lots of time - it is all your fault that Open2x is not released.

Oh, the hate is justified. You know, we're videogaming enthusiasts and while we are not angels and most of us probably steal a bunch of games occasionally, there is no need to dowload EVERY gamerom there is. I don't mind collecting retro roms if you can't get the originals but what the hell do you need 1300 DS roms for? developers are all frustrated because they have shit jobs that don't pay as much as they deserve.

My suggestion would be: delete a load of roms that you don't need at all, I am sure there are lots of double releases in there, like japanese and US and european versions of the same games. Why do you need those at all? Also, if you really want to get them for free, why do you need to have them on hdd at all times? not only is it risky, it's just unnecessary as the roms are available through the net at all times and in a matter of seconds.

PS.: If I really like a game that I might have downloaded, I am also getting the original. I am also right now in the process of buying as many DC originals as I can get my hands on... consider that many of the people making programs for your precious gp2x, the emulation or the homebrew scene also work on commercial software as their job and if they didn't get their pay, you wouldn't be able to enjoy any of these emulators and programs.

This is probably the funniest thing I read all day!!!

oh and +1 on the perma ban thingy.....
