In a perfect world, the best version would be the SNES version - by far the best sound/music of any of the lemmings versions. I haven't played the MD version, but would assume whilst the music would be inferior, it must give a good account of itself. :)

In a perfect world, we would have full speed DOS emulation, and that would offer us the best Lemmings version...

Which is the Amiga version. ;)

Why is the Amiga version better? Wasn`t Lemmings originally a PC game?

I don't know why... but you can try this:

if(key(_enter)) lifecounter=0; end;  //end game by pressing start

Cheap, but may works.

No! It originated on the Amiga. :D

EDIT: I`ll rephrase that, It came out on the Amiga first.

Nope, because the PC version and the Amiga version have inferior music to the SNES version. :)

The Amiga and dare i say the Pc version were done by the original development team DMA Design, So were created many years before the snes version.

Btw, Have you played the Amiga version ?

The amiga version its the best.

It had MOD files.

The snes version "mods' had lower quality samples to preserve ROM space.

I have the ripped amiga mods here on my PC... they sound nothing compared to the ripped .SPC files from the SNES ROM.

Just thought I'd throw in a shout for the Lynx version - very well done and obviously this version was written for a handheld so the interface might be a bit easier on the GP32. That said, I haven't tried it in the emulator yet...

The SNES has a custom chip called the SPC700(12-bit), manufactured in-house by Sony. It can handle 44KHz sound, but only can access 64k (hint-the slow CPU can only access 64k at a time). Most games render the sound at 22KHz or 11KHz to save memory. This chip also has the first wavetable synthesis to ever appear on a console. It uses 16-voices and has a stock set of General MIDI instruements.

In English -
This put the radio-quality Genesis sound far, far behind. Its greatest achievement was the inclusion of "sampled" sound. It was the first console to do so. Incendently, Sony manufuctured the sound chip to make their CD-ROM attachment called the "Playstation" {Sound Familar? :)}. But NINTENDO didi not go through with the Sony Cd-ROM, because it wanted to have all the profits from the system. Sony has built the first Playstation out of this setback. It was 16-bit, but it paved way for the PSX as we know it today.

This is a cut `n` paste from a a website, So playing the .spc files on a PC will make them sound even better than they do on a real SNES let alone compared to an Amiga. As stated above, The SNES only renders the sounds at 22KHz or 11KHz because of the slow cpu, where as the PC can render them at 44KHz. A lot of Amiga .mod files did use 22KHz samples, But the the hardware was limited to four channels (unless cpu intensive tricks were used), So it was a case of quaility and not quantity.

Here is the graphics quality of the ports in order based on screenshots from mobygames and my opinion:

AMIGA
Atari ST
SNES
DOS
GENESIS
SMS
NES
GG
C64
GB
ZX Spectrum (Eww, 4 colors...the background and the lemmings are the same color).

I agree about the Lynx version. It's the best non-mouse controlled version that I've played and so would probably lend itself very well to the GP32's controller.
