very nice, i bought my first Tin Whistle in Blarney right after i kissed the Blarney Stone...... i want a low D but i dont think i hve big enough hands to reach the holes....
I had several low-D whistles by now, some are specifically made for small hands and I need that too.
So far the ones best playable with small hands were:
Carbony / Rob Gandara
- Ideal for very small hands but lacks in range and chromatics, warm sound.
- Inverted cylindrical bore (you want that with small hands).
- Pricey and not very versatile though.
MK Pro
- Often described as "God's gift to low whistlers". I agree.
- Mostly "out of stock".
- Pricey but worth it.
Tony Dixon
- The plastic version actually plays better than the more expensive aluminium version. Fantastic price/value ratio. Range and chromatics are excellent, sound is nice although not comparable to MK Pro.
- Inverted cylindrical bore (see Carbony).
I didn't try the
Alba low D but since it's made by a woman (just like the MK Pro), it should work although I think the spacing of the Alba's is very weird.
What I urge you to stay away from when you have small hands:
Ian lambe and
Howard. The sound is fantastic but I just couldn't close the holes properly with my fingers.
I'd recommend looking for the Dixon Low D in local music stores, they often have it since it's made in big numbers.
If it doesn't need to be a Low D, I highly recommend Low F and G whistles, the Chieftains are nice for example when it comes to those sizes although you can never go wrong with Dixon and they are cheaper.
I have whistles in the keys of D, Eb, E, F, G, A, Bb, c, d, eb, e, f and g.
There's a size for everyone. I just need all those because I play with many different instruments from different cultures on sessions and the keys vary a lot.
Since I currently own 19 whistles of various sizes and tried many brands by now in big and small, just ask for further information.
I am not playing exclusively Irish but also French, German, Greek, Russian and Swedish folk on them so versatility (range, chromatics) is probably more important to me than to anyone else.
PS: I'm only talking about tunable ones since I never used non-tunables.
