What Can The Gp2x Do That Gp32 Cant?

*wonders if someone will flame Jabberwocky for a post like that*

No offense, I won't flame you anyways. ;)
They call me Mr.TibbsJabberwocky :)
Steve-O is looking for information that could cost him 150 quid. He is entitled to hear honest opinions. He has to sift through the fanboy fuelled responses and the more objective views and come to a decision. I took a risk being an early adopter, he does not have to. Flaming me is not going to help him. It is a great device but not as big a leap forward from the GP32 as it was hyped to be.

wow yeah he's either a complete and total retard

like someone who can't use the quote function or complete a sentence ? ;)

The advantage the GP2X has over the GP32 as I see it is new stuff. The GP2X scene is moving. The GP32's isn't, at least not noticably.

The GP32, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it's dead, is in the end of its life.

EDIT: Not saying that you should certainly go with a GP2X, from where I stand it seems that the GP32 had enough stuff released to keep you going for a long time.

With regards to the N64 Emulation bit: I'm actually going to refer to something someone wrote in the 1910's - one of Norman Rockwell's art teachers:

- begin long quotation from 2004 thread -

Train your judgment:
Let us say, then, that you must train your critical judgment. How do you to set about it? In the first place, don't set up your own liking as a criterion. Make up your mind that when it comes to a choice between personal taste and that of some one who may be supposed to know, between what you think and what has been consented to by all the men who have ever had an opinion worthy of respect, you may rest assured that you are wrong. It is when you have made up your mind to that, when you have reached that mental attitude, you have taken a long step towards training your judgment; for you have admitted a standard outside of mere opinion"
-- Daniel Burleigh Parkhurst
-- http://www.artrenewal.org/

Too many people on the Internet think they are the masters of something, when usually they are only the masters of their own opinions. Others simply attempt to apply the quote as more of a tool for all things, and not what most of us are: students.

The quote from Mr. Parkhurst is not implying that you should not think on your own. It does say that admitting a standard outside of your own opinion is a first step to training your judgment, which indicates it's a baby step compared to the long haul, and it is.

However, it is my experience that a great many people on the internet are not even willing to admit "a standard outside of mere opinion." This closes our minds to learning from others things we might not want to know or believe.

- end long quotation from 2004 thread -

People in the know - those with opinions worthy of respect - are GP2X developers (obviously I refer to the homegrown as no Koreans from GamePark Holdings frequent this forum). By those, I mean those with actual product out there.

Sure, they disagree at times, and when they do, it's useful to sit back and read quietly. But when they all seem to be agreeing on something, it's a learning opportunity for yourself.

:)

Edit: Copy & Paste missed the trailing end of a sentence.

PS - Apologies that this is so off-topic. It seemed relevant.

I would have agreed with Mr.Jabberwocky on a few points at the begining of the gp2x's life cycle but now some of those points are moot.

most notably:

Boot time now only takes ~12 secs.
Joy sick has been replaced with a more confortable one (and you have a choice to which one you want.)

Most of the other statments where based around personal preference. Just because you don't use a feature doesn't mean its not a valid upgrade/differance.

I for one love watching movies and playing Classic Video games on my 42" TV. :)

It bloody well is. There is absolutely no other meaning that can be inferred from that paragraph. But enough of this high brow discussion - gimme teh ROMZ!!!!!!!!!!

I take it that Steve-O already has a GP32 and will realise that the ~12 second boot time on the GP2X is ~11 seconds longer. As for the joy sick(sic) that is something that can only be experienced to truly appreciate and seems to be a matter of personal preference.
If you don't use a feature does mean its not a valid upgrade/difference. It is only if you intend to use it that it becomes valid.
If he did not have a GP32 I would have no hesitation in recommending the GP2X because of the open nature and the community. But he already has that with the GP32.

I was not intending to get into an argument with you, but if you wish to debate then so be it.

The Title of the Thread is "What Can The Gp2X Do That the Gp32 Cant"

The Gp2X CAN out put to a tv the gp32 CANNOT

The Gp2X CAN use upto 4GB SD cards and SMCs the gp32 CANNOT

The Gp2X CAN Play MP3s and OGGS and Divx encoded Videos out of the box the gp32 CANNOT.

Your right The stick is personal preference, and the boot time is still more than the gp32 (and most other "program at boot" devices). I'll even conceed on the tvout being an upgrade. But It is truly and undeniably a difference.

Doing so, Jabber, teaches us judgment, without having to beat our own heads against a wall. The man taught painters - do you think he taught Norman Rockwell not to think? For artists, first you must learn to draw accurately before you can "find your style" - so perhaps the quote is misplaced here.

The GP2X has nerd sex appeal.

Edit: Whoa, got my wires crossed and thought this was the GP2X versus PSP thread I'm also following! Duh!

I should flame you for you believing N64 emulation is possible on the GP2X...

But I'm nice and I will not =)

You know, that's being an ass. I SERIOUSLY expected someone to flame him for saying that. I was not insulting him or flaming him in any way.

I don't think he SHOULD be flamed for what he said, but I figured that he WOULD get flamed, knowing what I know from being an IRCop.

I didn't flame you, I just made the observation that you probably would be flamed. I don't think you should be flamed and I understand the points you made, although I didn't agree with some of them, and some were only cons depending on what you like and what you don't.

I merely made an observation, if I had wanted to flame you (and had been stupid enough to flame you) it would've been a long drawn out post, and as is with most flames, it probably wouldn't have made much sense, seeing as when you are to the point of flaming, you are normally past the point of any reasonable thought.

I seriously did not mean to insult you, so please, don't take it as one.

Sorry if my reply suggested I thought you were flaming. Obviously you were not. It had not occurred to me that anyone would flame me for trying to help Steve-O in his decision, until you pointed it out. I said that (flaming me would not help Steve-O) to try and keep this thread on-topic, not as a rebuke to you. So, no offence taken.:)

A balanced view from a former owner of a GP32 (which I *loved*) and current Mk2 GP2X (which I *love*) owner:

Pros to upgrading to a GP2X:

* four face buttons, ABXY, to better emulate SNES and other uses (Nethack is a breeze!).
* shoulder buttons are a LOT better. Even with the "paper trick" my GP32's shoulders were dicky.
* SD cards. SMCs was IMO the single biggest annoyance on GP32.
* in-built (and better) media playing/viewing -- mainly for travel.
* TV-out, if you want it.
* new games and emulators not possible on GP32, e.g. full-speed Quake & Duke Nukem 3D, Exult, Amiga (this is VERY impressive), Neo Geo, PC Engine CD, etc.
* improved emulation on some equivalents, especially MAME. SNES is already a little better, and will improve further.
* continued software progress. It's a thrill to see new stuff being developed every week.

Cons:

* battery life is *slightly* shorter. With Firmware 2.0, I get about 5 hours. I used to get a bit over 6 hours with the same batteries on GP32. Not a huge deal since you can just replace the batteries and carry on.
* *possibly* the joystick. Some people prefer the GP32's, some prefer the Mk2's. I'm on the fence. I think the GP32's was easier to use (smaller dead-zone), but the GP2X's is more precise (esp. with diagonals on the Mk2).

I'd say it comes down to how much extra it would cost you. If you're keeping the GP32 and buying a GP2X in addition, the additional cost may not be justified YET (but it surely will sometime in the future). However if you're selling the GP32 and have to pay an extra $50 or so to get the GP2X, then yes it's probably worthwhile.

My mistake. I read too much into the question. I thought he was looking for opinions as to wether it was worth getting a GP2X. You should have posted this earlier and saved us all a lot of typing. In fact he should have just read the features list on craigix's website and worked it out himself. Lazy f****r !

How does accepting the view of 'all the men who have ever had an opinion worthy of respect' without question teach you to think for yourself ? If everyone had done that we would still believe the world was flat and be living in caves.
It would be unfair to blame Parkhurst for Norman Rockwell. Have you seen that guy's pictures ? That sugar and spice 'how I wish the world was' crap just shows he never had a thought exceeding those of a seven year old girl playing with Barbie dolls.
