I too started out with VB and ASP. It's very tricky to get your head around C-derived languages once you've been spoiled. However, VB is excellent for learning about the three main tasks required to write a program:
sequence
selection
iteration
Due to work requirements, I learned Javascript then Flash actionscript before Java, J2ME and finally C. Some might say that's working backwards!
PM if you want an introduction into C basics, and once you've got a sprite up and moving around, you'll be pretty much on your way! The most important thing when learning is to start with something "small". It's amazing how much goes into creating something as simple as noughts-and-crosses....
