This could fall into the Pandora 2 Spam, I guess, but it is more of a general question in light of what was achieved under Slackware for Pandora (displaying Full-HD through a USB peripheral). Obviously too slow for videos/games at this stage, but if, in the future, we have a USB3.0 host port, would that be possible to transmit Full-HD video at 25 FPS (or more?).

According to specs this should be possible (asumming there is a receiver that can cope with it), but no one can say wether the SoC can use USB3 up to its full potential or not yet.

@se...

I see many purposes: maybe connect a full fledged USB Dock, to make a workstation out of the Pandora 2

Like thatgui said it should be feasible, but most modern SoCs have the ability to drive two digital outs at once, so HDMI is possible if this was a pandora 2 related.

Why not HDMI?

Because you must pay royalties to use HDMI. DisplayPort is royalty free & double the bandwidth. I vote for a micro DisplayPort connector.

Ti got around this on the Beagleboard by using the same connector as HDMI but excluding the audio output and just calling it DVI-D output.

Or like you said Displayport.

DP sounds like a good idea, but isn't there a clause saying that the licence is retracted if you infringe an apple 'patent' ?

Could a HDMI connector, with a convenient solder pad for the audio lines nearby work?

if OP wanted to change from DVI-D to HDMI, they could do so with a tiny change to the cad files

(and any user with a soldering iron could turn it into an hdmi-compatible DVI-D + audio connector)

We could just have the spot for an HDMI port, and it could be left to the user to solder it on if that circumvents and legal issues

HDMI Adopters pay an annual fee of ten thousand dollars (US$10,000). The annual fee is due upon the execution of the Adopter Agreement, and must be paid on the anniversary of this date each year thereafter. Note that HDMI does provide an alternative annual fee payment for small-volume manufacturers (10,000 units or less). Please see Attachment B of the Adopter Agreement for details.

$10,000!!! WOW!

But I wonder, would it not be possible to simply provide the "spot" on the board and the cutout on the case and then provide a link to Newark.com (or something similar) that is the "suggested attachment"

Would this avoid having to pay $10,000?

USB 3.0 + adapter box with software & drivers = 1080p video. Currently Windows only.

USB/MHL + dongle with software & drivers = 1080p video. This is Samsung's solution for it's smartphones.

MiniDVI

microHDMI

HDMI

Displayport

They're all somewhat viable options - each has it's own licensing and software/drivers requirement and with any of them you'll still need a cable from there to your TV.

Samsung also makes a wireless option for connecting video from their phones - I don't know if it is any good.

Other wireless options are starting to appear:

There are lots of ways to get from here to there - lets avoid doing it on an oddball plug this time?

I'm going to back displayport for the moment, because It can act as non-proprietary universal connector.

There could be a lot of cool things done with it, including compatibility with a nice dock or two :)

Altough I would like that very much, the chances will be very low. In the end the choosen SoC will dictate the video output, with nearly every phone/tablet having a hdmi out its more likely that the P2 will have HDMI to. Ed also said that they would be willing to pay the fees for it.

How unfortunate it would be to see such a great community disbanded by the rapid advancement of mobile technology or disagreements on the specifications of a device that may never exist.

That will never happen as long as ED pays for hosting fees, this community will always exist.
