Tv-out Not So Good ;(

A breakout cable/board/whatever in general is something that splits a single connector with lots of pins into individual connectors for the different signals that are in the main connector, although I like Eolair's definition too.

nigelibrown, will that breakout board allow powering the GP2X over the EXT port? If that's possible, it sounds like it may be wanted since some people complain about the position of the DC-in socket.

The TV cables were made by a 3rd party in China and supplied to distributors via gamepark, the quality is 'classic' Chinese in that they don't fit the ext port quite right, thus the signal on some is assed.

Gotta love the Chinese!

Ohhh... I have to post this now. Come on, everybody sing along.

I Like Chinese - Monty Python
Spoken: The world today seems absolutely crackers.
With nuclear bombs to blow us all sky high.
There are fools and idiots sitting on the trigger.
It's depressing, and it's senseless, and that's why...

Intro: I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're always friendly and they're ready to please.

Verse: I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
There's nine hundred million of them in the world today,
You'd better learn to like them, that's what I say.

Chorus: I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
They come from a long way overseas,
But they're cute and they're cuddly, and they're ready to please.

Verse: I like chinese food,
The waiters never are rude,
Think of the many things they've done to impress,
There's Maoism, Taoism, I Ching and chess.

Chorus: So I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin and yang-ese.

Verse: I like Chinese thought,
The wisdom that Confucious taught,
If Darwin is anything to shout about,
The Chinese will survive us all without any doubt.

Chorus: So I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
They only come up to your knees,
Yet they're wise and they're witty, and they're ready to please.

Verse: (in Chinese)

Chorus: I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
Their food is guaranteed to please,
A fourteen, a seven, a nine and lychees.

Chorus: I like Chinese,
I like Chinese,
I like their tiny little trees,
Their Zen, their ping-pong, their yin and yang-ese.

Fade: I like Chinese,
I like Chinese...

:p

exactly that's it

Wow... I wonder though, if this will work without an USB host? I mean it's pretty big you know, about 5 meters long and 1 meter tall, leave alone the portability issues

Tv-out will work with games and menu soon...if anyone cared to read the post on the official site you'd know that...

4Th Firmware Upgrade (version 1.1.0)*************************

1. What is upgraded by the 4th firmware (version 1.1.0)

Be sure to read "How to upgrade the Firmware".

1) Support 2G SD card partially
- Enabled GP2x to detect 2G SD card
- Data in PC can be copied onto SD card mounted on GP2x

Note: This time, the firmware could not facillitate copying the data
contained in SD card mounted on GP2x back onto the PC.
This feature shall be facilitated soon.

2) Extended battery Life
- 3 hour and 15 minutes of playing movie.
(Test condition:Sanyo rechargeable battery 2500mA/bit rate
800Kb/earphone)

* We will extend it up to 4 hours through firmware upgrade soon.

3) TV-out Utility (separate utility)
- Facilitated transmission of video signals to TV.
- Yet to facilitate transmission of MENU and games
This feature shall be facilitated soon.
- 5th firmware shall facilitate easy connection to TV via TV-out in

middle of skipping video images.

6) Added Pause function of video by pressing stick.
If you press stick when playing video(without MENU screen), it
pauses.

--------------------------------------------------------------

3. How to upgrade firmware

1) Composition of firmware file
- compressed file of 4th firmware
( file name: ‘firware version 1.1.0.zip’)
- Mplayer_tv.gpu (video TV-out utility)

2) How to upgrade
* It is recommended to format SD card in FAT32 mode before
upgrading firmware.

* SD card of 128M or up is recommended.

1st Step: After making new folder on PC, download ‘4th update.zip’
file.

2nd Step: Down load mplyter_tv.gpu file on the same folder with
‘4th update.zip’ file.

3rd Step: Unzip‘4th update.zip’ file.
Following files shall be generated.
(charset.tar / gp2xkernel.img / Ebookviewer / MusicPlayer /
Profile / Patch20051216.gpu / version /mplayer) .

4th step: After inserting SD card into GP2x, click Setting MENU and
select USB and then check connection of PC and GP2x.

5th step: After unzipping, copy 8 generated files and
Mplayer _tv.gpu file on SD card
(Do not make separate folder on SD card. Just paste on it)

6th step: After making sure of copying, reboot GP2x.
( “Firmware Upgrading”appears on booting screen)

7th step: after 6th step, click Utility on the MENU screen, and then

as soon as you select TV-out on Setting MENU).

I got my tv-out cable from play-asia and it has the problem where I have to hold it at a certain angle to get output to the tv.

The problem is because the some of the metal pins on the ext connector don't line up horizontally (some are depressed to far), which means they wont be making contact with the gp2x when plugged in.

I pushed down on the connector so that all the pins line up and now it works perfectly everytime (be careful when pushing down so that you don't break the plastic though).

Nice to know that's all it is. That would be very easily fixable.

My official TV-out wire (bought from gp32z) doesn't work at all. Plugged it up to my switchbox (the damn S-video input is in the BACK of my TV, and a lot don't even HAVE that. WTF is up with no yellow pin?). I get fine audio, no video at all (not even a flicker).

So then I thought the switch box might be the problem. I tore down my entire cabinet, took out the TV, plugged it in and connected the wires DIRECTLY into the ports at the back. Set my input to "S-Video" and, surprise surprise... Audio and NO video.
WTF?

Ok guys, I got mine from play asia, and of course I need some additional materials to get this to work. I obviously need an adapter b/c both the L and R audio jacks are male, as are my television's ports. And i guess they make an s-video extension cable as mine is in the back of my tv while the audio jacks are in the front.

So is that all I need, or is there something im missing??

Well, at least you could test it; a lot of people are still waiting for PAL support. I tried hooking it up to the TV and it worked well, seemed to make contact without problems, but watching an ntsc signal on an old pal tv isn't pleasant at all.

Is there something you're supposed to do to test it besides just plugging it in? Update software(not firmware, have 1.1.0) or something? The "TV-OUT" on my settings menu doesn't do anything.

yeah, neither does mine. It's the only option on the menu which doesn't work at all...

Most newish TVs should handle it just fine.
