Retro Gamer here. The keyboard combined with gaming controls really makes this device stand out from any other on the market.

I also intend to use it for recording/writing lecture notes at university, and listening to music & viewing video files on the move.

I've not voted. I'm not primarily a retro fan but do like retro games. I wasn't a homebrew fan but there are some projects out there that are going to change that. I like using linux and have some knowledge, but 'enthusiast' sounds too deep. I think a better description is handheld fan -I want a handheld that does any and all this stuff.

I didn't have a GP2X but did have a GP32 for a while. I have pre-ordered.

I'm really tired about the situation of the games industry. Current games are too centered in audiovisual experience and forget the gameplay and fun. Games are too complex in the technical stuff that they got less funny and more into impressing to people in the tech stuff aka graphic whores and those terms.

I agree. Sometimes the games are also so complicated that you almost have to 'specialise' in them.
I love games where you can pick them up for a few minutes, enjoy it and put them down again. Or still be playing hours later.

Not necessarily a "home-brew" fan and, whilst retro is interesting, I've only ever played an hour or so of them on MAME. Best category would have to be "Linux enthusiast", but that's only because I am looking forward to developing on the Pandora as a gaming device and know how to code games on that platform *shrug*

It is good to see I am in the company of alot of "pre-orderers" who have never owned a GP* previously. Given over half the respondents fit into this category - it makes posts I have made elsewhere (about customer nervousness, etc) at least fit the facts of this poll :)

Certainly not a gaming fan, at least not on a handheld, I've got a perfectly good dual core machine with lots of RAM and a big screen for that.

I'm interested in platform development, 3D drivers (for cool UI more than games, though they are cool when they show off the hardware's abilities), DSP programming, video decoding, that sort of stuff.

Some people seem to asume the Pandora's audience is somewhat the same as the gp2x-community. I wonder if that still applies and therefor created this poll.
I want to congratulate you for this ecellent poll.
We had many polls which most were just stupid and I didn't even considered to take part.

And the answers (till now) are even more interessting. I am not surprised that the most here on this forum haven't had a GP32 or Gp2x but it is good to see that it is like this.

thank you

I am mostly a Linux enthusiast with some gaming desires. As of this year I am a Linux convert from M$ and I like to explore all the Linux I can get my hands on. I truly think open source can bring revolutionary ideas, like the Pandora.

I'm a linux enthusiast and I never had gp2x. But I like old games a lot, too! But what is homebrew?

I think that most happy hours with pandora will be hacking games on the go, not necessarily playing them. Or playing them, to test them. But of course I'll be playing ZX80 games, etc, but that won't be those most happy hours :)

Why hacking on the go, and not at desktop? Because when I'm at desktop I usually have some boring reallife work to do.

But what is homebrew?

When I was younger 'homebrew' always meant beer you made at home. Now it means games that are made 'at home'.

aah, then I qualify too, perhaps just a little, because I wrote only less than a dozen of small games which nobody played except me and my friends :)

I can beat that. I never had any friends so I made games that only I played! :p

It should be checkboxes instead, but I guess mostly Linux/FOSS-Enthusiast and hacker and tinkerer in general, but I will ofcourse play homebrew games and emulators too. I also hope to write some games for it myself, it will be a fun way to develop my programming skills.

Retro-Gamer,
Homebrew-Fan,
Linux-Enthusiast,
Had GP2X,
Preordered

My official vote was Homebrew-fan, but I'm all of these.

I don't actually care that much about the gaming capabilities.
I needed a device that:
-would be handheld
-would get all-day battery life
-can run full firefox (wi-fi is fine)
-can display ebooks, pdfs, cbrs, and videos
-can do voip
-can hold at least 16 Gb
-can charge via usb (I intend to charge it using the Solio solar charger)
-would cost under $500, preferably under $400

I needed this to be my all-in-one device for traveling and hiking.

The Pandora is the only device that can do all that. (Well, at least it was when I preordered.)

Am I really that much in the minority?

The Pandora can't charge via usb

I mainly want it for network, music, video, and _maybe_ games if I have time. You are just maybe in the 20% minority along with me that want it for other-than-game-based use in majority

yes it can(according to the wiki, 3rd from the bottom)
It is based/alike the beagle board(which runs on USB) so I would expect it to.

Has that been confirmed, If so, that's a bit sucky.
