The MIST FPGA

Can you try booting with the .adf disk images?

In my experience it's very sensitive to the ROM version that you use, and that's a quick way to check.

Also I think it's best to format the .hdf from inside the MiST (after creating a blank file from a PC). I've installed workbench 3.1 within the MiST from .adf images into it and it worked fine.

yeah I got workbench 3.1 working no problem installing from adf files, but I am trying to install classic workbench, which is a collection of tools to make workbench instantly usable. it also comes with whdload. this is what I am having trouble with.

EDIT: Oops... I can see that I typed workbench classic, instead of classic workbench in my previous post. sry for the confusion.

EDIT2: I got the lite version of classicwb to boot and it's marvelous! Loaded with utilities and nice icons. I am loving it. Now I am going to try the whdload features. Very exciting!

UPDATE: I got whdload working! apparently the latest core doesn't play well with whdload, which gave me nothing but errors. I used the aga core release from nov. 2014 and it works! I will try pinball fantasies/illusions again with whdload this time!

Try disabling Fast RAM with the latest core, it's been reported to work with WHDLoad in the MiST forums.

will try that! thanks a lot!

UPDATE: with fast RAM disabled I still get the same error messages on WHDLoad. Besides, running an AGA core without fast RAM is kind of pointless. Well it works with the old aga core, so I will just wait until the next release.

BTW: Pinball Illusions does not run with WHDLoad! Couldn't start the game at all when loading from adf, whdload at least shows intro and menu screen but the game crashes as soon as you select a table. Again, will try again once a newer AGA core is available.

Hi ED,

How much is shipping to the UK?

I like the look of this.

As signed mail (cheapest solution, only takes 3 - 5 days to UK as well) it's 6,50 EUR.

Cool. One more quick question, does the version in your shop have the midi interface built in?

And does the price in the shop and postage have the VAT on it?

Thanks for the reply. I think the price is good, but would I really use it? I could buy a CubieBoard A90 or ODroid for the same amount.... hmmm decisions,

Edit: Sod it, I'm going to get one! Just need to clear some space and raise a little cash. Watch this space!

Ok, I have just got one, not from ED (sorry, ED!), but a guy was selling a MIDI one on Ebay for 30 or so GBP less

This looks very interesting for video game conservation. If better results can be achieved that with emulation.

A grave has been dug!

I'm going through a round of (weeping) letting some retro-gear go; I just have too much stuff, and need to make some room for the kids to have their stuff .. and get some $$ for more current hobbies. So, trying to shave another layer off the retro (every other year it seems, I decide I can handle letting a bit more go, slowly edging towards my core collection.) Just let go a turbo-grafx, and a MAs supernova SuperGun (arcade pcb on TV) system. Next up some Atari 8bit stuff I think, and maybe a vic-20. (I was a 2600 -> Vic-20 -> ST -> PC fellow..) -- I used to work for Atari back in the day (they hired kids as salesmen, since we knew what we were talking about :), so managed to take my pay in hardware so have quite a pile of awesome rare stuff.

On topic?

Sure! As an emu author, I'm a fan of virtualization. But as an arcade collector I'm sort of a purist .. I like the tactile feedback of the real controllers, and the 'feel' of standing in front of a real machine and having a go. A modern emu can do wonders on a big LCD though .. adding scanlines and warping the display or adding fake cigarette burns! The big arcade-controllers that plug into USB are swank. Using a SuperGun (or an emu on your laptop) to fire up a Neo Geo game on a 50" TV is amazing!

We used to have the dichotomy .. use an emu and no need for giant space eating 30 year old hardware, but lack the 'trueness' and tactile feel; or go for the big power eating hardware!

But now we have a blend of options .. you can get FPGA which is not an emulation (more a simulation at hardware level), but that adds a little of both sides; its not the real deal, and is much more easy to come by sometimes.. even cheaper. (the MiST has an excellent price, compared to say Suska or FireBee). Machines like Firebee add much more potential, but are less true to the origins so don't do gaming, but let you run more modern stuff on there.

So a whole spectrum exists.. affording more choices. In the end.. just more to acquire, not less :)

I'm trying to cut down ... identify the core equipment I want to have, anbd keep it plugged into a TV say; then rely more on emulation and FPGA-simulation for 'fun, not as important to me' stuff. Let the rest go to a good home.

MiST is a great machine, and quite flexible. It annoys me that it has display issues with my various TVs..

.. but ED needs to stock Gonbes and other upscaler units now :) The GBS-8220 and similar are very affordable (like $20 on ebay) and good for taking in arcade signals, or old consoles, upscaling them to a high res LCD and even adding scanlines.

MiST + GBS-8220 is the hotness :)

I should really get an upscaler, but have managed so far to do without an ebay login. I've seen one or two things on Amazon but they're mainly designed for AV nerds, so go for silly money, and don't even offer scanlines!

Why would you not want an ebay login? You worried you'll go crazy? :)

(You can use money orders etc, no need to give them your bank)

I have seen a couple of people getting into crazy bidding wars, but I guess I'm not actually worried that I would not be able to resist that seriously. I guess it's just an old decision that I've not really revisited, back when I was more concerned about my personal data, especially when it went to US-based companies and servers, but these days I've even had to use palpal on a few occasions, so I guess ebay already has my bank cards and home address already if it really wants them.

Still, I'd prefer to order from someone like ED if I could.

scanlines!
That is what I am looking for in my modernized set up for retro gaming/computing. Until I find some options that seem like they will work for me I will be sticking with my CRT TV and monitors. One monitor is a green screen, and would like something that can give me amber (I saw something that offered most of what I am seeking for the Apple IIc, but I need something for a IIe and my consoles, and possibly a C64, MiST, etc.). The TV picture is really starting to get bad, so I have been exploring my options and will either go with a smaller old tube TV/monitor or keep looking for something for my modern ones.

The biggest issues for me is cost and, as seems to be the case for some others, reducing the quantity or space of stuff that only I use in my home. I have kept everything fully "authentic" until now, however I am fine with giving up a bit if it will help me out in the long run...there is no point in trying to keep all original hardware if my displays die and I can't afford to repair or replace them.

I don't have, or need, top of the line stuff, just enough to keep it similar to how it was when I was younger. I would be interested in what people here are using, or any lower cost solutions. (Although I feel this fits here, if I am too far off topic we can split this discussion.)

Well, the MIST has scanlines emulation included... but I always play on my CRT anyways :)

For the MiST, it depends on the driver (some do, some don't) and can also depend on the resolution or mode (PAL vs NTSC and so on) as well as the receiving equipment. Its really quite a PITA .. with an emulator, its just rendering to a known good display; with an FPGA like this, every driver has its own code to drive the output .. variosu frequencies and resolutions and all that. Most drivers are using the same 'code' for that, but they're not all using the same.. and of course it changes ovre time so some drivers are using older code than others, etc. For me, most of the MiST display modes I tried a few months back don't work on my main TV, and a few work on my basement TV; both are modern LCDs (50" for the main one, 40" for the other) bought in the last few years. Just crappy handling for low slow resolutions and frequencies :/ But I understand in Europe the PAL handling etc is still pretty good.

But I'm a little out of date.. need to get all the latest cores and see now :) I also fiddled a lot with GBS-8220 upscaler there, which has pretty good results for low price.

ED -- you got those iny oru shop? Be a good candidate for you maybe :)
