SONY PlayStation 4 (PS4)

Ah, I didn't even know that XBOX360 played them ... makes sense of course seeing as it was the technology that MS backed.

I'll give those old films to someone with a 360 then, no good to me, I got rid of my old 360's a couple years ago.

That's interesting about the PS4, have to check the prices on it, but sounds a nice service
To be honest I never really understood why the XBOX 360 had a separate HD-DVD player and not have it built in.

Yup, that PS4 news is the next big thing online for them and some of us. All the bloody tittles will be available!! What a library that will be!!

The 360 came out before the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray thing really happened. The PS3 had a Blu-Ray because Sony designed Blu-Ray, they were really pushing the technology; if HD-DVD had won Sony would have taken a major loss. Microsoft really only released their HD-DVD player as direct competition to Sony, an attempt to make Blu-Ray fail. It didn't work, but Microsoft really didn't lose anything as a result of backing HD-DVD first. It was really a no-lose situation for them.

Yeah I misunderstood CCF initially, I thought he meant the 360 had that drive, as in the one that comes with it can play HD DVD.

....I'll probably just pop them into the charity shop and someone can pick them up for a quid or whatever they sell them for

Unless anyone over here in UK has a player and fancies watching a few oldies? :)

I'll pay that P&P but not to rest of the world

PS: Sorry for going a bit OT there...

So, about the PS4 thing, emulating the PS1 and PS2. Heard any more on this, I'm wondering if it would be a subs type thing, like Netflix where can pay a monthly subs and play as much of the old classics as you like. That'd be great

I think this backwards compatibility stuff will only work for some selected and tested games that you then can buy from their onlinestore like the virtual console.

I don't think that they will have support for old dvd and cds.

Head spinning reports about Sony's VR headset -

http://www.roadtovr.com/sonys-ps4-vr-headset-impressive-valves-new-details-emerge/

Our source describes the HMD as having an FOV comparable to that of the Oculus Rift DK1 but with a much higher resolution. Further, the prototype our source had extensive time with, used two glowing orbs mounted atop the headset. Using a camera, assumed at this point to be the standard PS4 stereo camera that launched alongside the console late last year, the system tracks the user’s head in 3D space using the orbs to pinpoint position. Currently we have no information as to how head orientation is tracked, but it would make sense for Sony to include a solution similar to the Oculus Rift headtracker (IMU).

Perhaps more interestingly, though, is that our developer source claims also to have attended the recent Steam Dev Days event in Seattle and sampled Valve’s apparently impressive prototype VR headset. According to the source, the two HMDs compare very favourably. The general impression was that resolution was comparable between Sony’s and Valve’s unit (reported to use two 1080p panels) and that head tracking accuracy was very close.

Oh... and sort of related -

That would nice, not so bothered for the concert/sport type stuff, but some PS4 gaming with this VR could be very nice

3D printed clamping device would be an idea for that!

"Sony set to reveal PS4 virtual reality headset at GDC 2014'

http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/sony-set-to-reveal-ps4-virtual-reality-headset-at-gdc-2014-1226620

Our confidential tipster said that they were impressed with the quality of Sony's Oculus Rift competitor. "The quality and resolution are really, really good," they said. "People will definitely be impressed with what Sony's built".

They also told us that they understand Sony plans to announce the headset at GDC 2014, which kicks off in San Francisco on March 17.
Expensive year ahead.

Sony's VR headset revealed:

"Project Morpheus" (See what they did there? Matrix ahoy!)

Looks quite slick, like a Gort mask (The day the earth stood still).

Prototype specs - they stress, not final (FOV isn't as good as Oculus at present):

1080p display

90 degree FOV

Tracking builds on PS Move and DualShock 4 technology, "supports forward prediction." Position and rotating head tracking: 1000HZ, 3 Meter Working Volume, Full 360 Degrees

Prototype has a wired connection to PS4 - other solutions being investigated

They're only cooperating with other VR technology "in spirit." No "standardized APIs."

Eyetracking inside the headset "being investigated"

PS4 Camera is required

All other details 'speculative' - including release date, price.... all the meat.

Edit: It will be playable at Sony's GDC booth shortly, so we'll learn about some of the games - some say God of War has already been demoed.

Edit 2: It has onboard 3D audio processing that -it is claimed- use the motion sensors to correctly position sounds too.

Short clip of someone playing with the headset - ducking a dragon in their 'Morpheus demo' - obviously interactive as the guy has two move controllers too - check out the lights on the corners of the headset, just like crystal cove. It might make it easier with such similar setups, for devs to make cross-platform VR games...?

I want to see what he's seeing!

Edit: also very nice, demo of the eye-tracking they 'may' incorporate in the headset:

"... the system tracks the user’s head in 3D space using the orbs to pinpoint position. Currently we have no information as to how head orientation is tracked, but it would make sense for Sony to include a solution similar to the Oculus Rift headtracker (IMU)."

I'm confused - they say how the head is tracked and then they say they don't know how it's tracked... Using 2 orbs can tell you everthing about the head position:

  • If the two orbs are closer together then the person is further from the camera.
  • Two orbs further separated then the person is closer to the camera.
  • If one Orb is higher than the other in the Y direction head is tilted
  • If one orb is larger than the other head is rotated
So how do we not know how they are tracking the head? :S

Well, that was before anything was confirmed, maybe they were hedging their bets!

It's now 4 LEDs front, 2 rear, they can get plenty from the visual geometry, but they're principally for positional tracking, head orientation (tilt/rotation) would also come from the gyros I presume.

It opens up an interesting world of alternative controllers - for a driving game, you could have a steering wheel that has nothing but 2 rear-facing LEDs (on a second disc, turned by the main wheel directly), so your position relative to the wheel could be seen, giving accurate virtual limbs, and the rotation of the wheel could be seen and applied as control.

Lightsabers are inevitable. I wonder if a larger gyroscope could be used to deliver feedback in a lightsaber, not unlike the resistance the system in a Segway delivers......!

All he's really saying (apart from fighting his corner now!) is a PS4 game can't have the same visual fidelity in VR as it would normally - I'm fine with that, if I could have PS2 level graphics in VR I'd be ok with that! Stick me inside Vice City, Ace Combat, GT3, TDU, Burnout 2's crash mode......
