[SOLVED] Aargh! My Sdhc Card Died In My Panda!

mkfs -t vfat -F 32 -I /dev/mmcblk0 will create a single fat32 partition on the sd card. Just make sure that the sd card is really /dev/mmcblk0. I don't have a Pandora yet and cannot confirm.

EDIT: this doesn't preserve your data or check your sd card for errors. It's like a quick format in windows.

«mkfs.vfat: No such file or directory», both as user and superuser.

Oh, and the card was in /dev/mmcblk0p1, apparently. It´s at least the only device that shows up in System´s SD Storage menu item (I obviously booted and inserted only the wonky card).

You'll need to install the dosfstools package from the angstrom repositories, it isn't included in the base os. Also, it's /dev/mmcblk0p1 for the first partition.

That's the partition on the card. /dev/mmcblk0 is the card itself, the actual physical device that contains the partition table that you would be editing. /dev/mmcblk0p1 is the "device" that is really just the existing partition. So it looks like the Pandora is recognizing the partition still exists. If fsck.vfat were installed, I would instruct you to use that to try and fix the card, but apparently it isn't.
So you've got the Pandora, and you've got a Windows box, but you don't have a card reader capable of reading SDHC cards for said Windows box? Or did I misunderstand that part?

I added the -I to force the vfat partition to BE the whole card instead of a partition ON the card. I don't know if the Pandora OS accepts this but I suppose Linux is Linux and so far I never had problems doing it this way. If you want to do it on the first partition then you would first have to fdisk the card and create a primary partition, then mkfs on mmcblk0p1, which makes it a bit more complicated for a beginner :)

It's a long-shot, but if you have access to a Macintosh, those tend to be very good about letting you format cards that have gotten borked in this way as they tend to immediately identify that the card needs to be "initialised" when you connect it (and it will then let you format it). Anything as far back as Mac OS X 10.3, at the very least, is capable of this.

It's essentially the same result as running the command-line formatting tools in Linux using a LiveCD, on a card you can't "see".

I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance, as my own recent SD Card corruption adventures didn't involve being unable to see the card, and I've long since forgotten what I did many years ago when this last happened to me (well, I remember that I fixed it at the command-line in Kubuntu, but what commands I don't recall).

Nope. None of the USB devices shows anything. There is, interestingly, a «SanDisk SDDR-113 USB Device» in the libraries of removable storage (I´m transmogrifying here, this Windows is not in English), but I´m suspecting it´s not the card in question, but one of the ports of which this pc has many. In any case, it has no items and I con´t do a thing with it.

FWIW, I have that exact same sdhc card reader and that is the device that your card would be in, which leads me to believe that you may indeed have a dead card...

edit: grammatical error.

Linux will tolerate that, but Windows won't. If you don't use windows, then you probably want to format ext3 instead of vfat.

I suggest running testdisk to locate the filesystem, if it's still there. It can recreate the partition table for you, should it be corrupted. Might want to use fdisk -l to check if the partition table looks halfway sane.

testdisk I don´t have.

fdisk -l /dev/mmcblk0 and fdisk -l /dev/mmcblk0p1 both return «Cannot open /[etc]»

I do have the output of dmesg, but due to the fact that I can´t go online with my Panda, I had to copypaste the output to a textfile.

Here it is (I don´t trust attaching it, because Notepad made a jumble of the layout and I needed OOo´s magic to get it formatted right again)

FYI, ATM of creating the file, I had a USB stick plugged in the Panda, so I could get the file out (we´re really basic here as far as network connectivity goes).

==========start of dmesg output==========

Problem solved.

Mali´s suggestion to use the N800 made me think. My N800 isn´t here, but I do have an old Archos PMA430 in storage. I dusted it off, plugged in the cardreader with the defective card and voilá! The PMA not only saw it (albeit with a corrupt filesystem, but managed to format the card as if nothing had happened.

So, thanks Mali, and thanks Archos-from-the-past (you know, when you weren´t yet evil).
