A faster SoC, whether it is ARM or x86, with access to a big GNU/Linux distro like Debian, means a
lot of software will become available that was not really usable on the Pandora because it would be too slow, it would need a higher screen resolution, or just nobody made the effort to port and package it as a PND. There are over 37500 software packages in Debian.
Some of the new things I imagine you will be able to do on the Pyra but not (really) on the Pandora:
- view any kind of movie format effortlessly
- simple movie editing
- advanced image manipulation
- 3D modelling, raytracing etc
- scientific software with decent performance (still no super computer number crunching of course)
- programming in any programming language, however obscure
- faster and more reliable web browsing and other internet stuff
- if it has a GPS: map viewers, route trackers, navigation etc
- office applications like LibreOffice will be more comfortable with a larger and higher res screen
- PSP and Dreamcast emulation full-speed
- all previous systems emulated with way less battery consumption and/or nicer scale filters
- maybe emulation of a few more recent systems, at some point
I don't care about x86 or ARM. GNU/Linux and Android work on both (Android probably better on ARM and closed-source linux stuff better on x86). I don't want to run Windows, and I don't think that even if the SoC is x86, the Pyra will be able to run Windows -- who is going to convince Microsoft to make it work? It's not just a normal PC, there is no way that a normal Windows will just install out of the box. And even if Microsoft for whatever reason decides to support the Pyra, there's no way they will do that without demanding exclusivity.
So you can talk about options and choices all day, but the reality is that whatever SoC you pick, some options are eliminated, at least when you're interested in closed-source software. An x86 SoC might give some extra options for running some windows software through Wine and some closed-source linux games, but it will take away the option to run some Android software and ARM-optimized software (open or closed source) like most of the emulators we have on the Pandora. It is by no means clear to me which SoC "allows for the greatest variety of software to be run on the device". Also note that we cannot predict future closed-source software releases, but with the OUYA and the Nvidia Shield, along with all those smartphones and tablets out there, it could very well be the case that ARM will be a bigger target than x86 in the coming years.

Why? For the closed-source x86 software? If you like closed-source software that much, what about the closed-source ARM software? Don't you think that closed-source ARM software will tend to be more suitable for a handheld device, in terms of power consumption, GPU expectations, physical screen size expectations, etc?
Anyway, I don't think we should let the architecture be dictated by considerations about closed-source software compatibility. Many of us aren't even interested in closed-source software.

I didn't say it's not a good choice, but you explicitly said that x86 is "the only way", so please explain to me why you said that, if it isn't for closed-source software.
