So, is somebody working on a x86 emulator?

Is somebody working on a x86 emulator? How would we play game for it? Would we just put the dos game in a folder and would the emulator automatically run it? Or would it be like a command prompt?

its about as likely as a GBA emulator.

In other words, it may be released, but it will ultimately be useless.

I think he means it wont run counter strike!!! hehe.

I think what azure meant is a legacy emulator for the old pc games (like captain comic, or commander keen)

I remember finding a website that had an x86 emulator for a pocket PC or something, best it could manage to run was a CGA computer running at about 2mhz. That was after a few years work.

Well, there was an 8086 emu for the ST... which says that something is possible. Albeit 8086 wouldn't be much use - need 286 minimum for any real functionality - but if they could manage it on that machine with a LOT less CPU power than the GP (we can emulate it even :) )then it must be possible for us...

With a sound card etc might be a different matter...

The Amiga had a PC emulator, and that would run on a machine running at 30mhz and 2 megs of RAM!

I believe an x86 emulator could be programmed that would run the most basic titles (perhaps even the earliest Sierra adventures?). Quite how fast it'd run is anyone's guess though.

The earlie Sierra Adventures run great on Sarien :)
And you can't expect games like Half-life or Doom3 to run on a x86 emulator, but games like Commander Keen or Dune2 should be possible

Dune 2? I'd be surprised... although Dune 1 might be doable. Remember, anything using 640x480 gfx is a little unlikely due to need to fiddle with screen res and crunch it..

I reckon we'll be lucky if we get a 4 meg of ram 20MHz machine. Very lucky. But that's roughly what I'm hoping for... Without soundblaster support or anything. Maybe add that later and sacrifice speed; we'd see...

a 20Mhz w/ 4 MB RAM x86 emulator would be great - even if it only had PC speaker emulation. It would play pretty much all of the classic Apogee and Epic games, and that's mainly what I would use it for. Even Wolfenstein 3d would run with those specs.

When I say lucky, though, I really mean it. As in it needs about 6 instructions in arm ASM for every function in x86, with a little left over. Which is hard.

But I'd guess that's the best we could hope for. If I'm more realistic, 12MHz might be good.

But even then, there's quite a lot of games available. Hey - even Jazz Jackrabbit *might* run. It ran on a 16MHz machine :)

I would kiss anyone who could make it so i could play Commander Keen, Jazz Jackrabbit, or any of those classic games on my Gp32!
But im thinking that maybe if the emulator did happen it would only run older games like the ORIGINAL Lode Runner. Now thats a trip back. And if anyone thinks about playing MS Flight Sim for dos on there, you should die lol
Even though the PocketPc Dos only can go just so far, you have to remember that you have the PocketPc OS running in the background like everyother MicroCrap operating system. That sucks up resources, but probably not as much as im thinking. It would be nice to play all those old dos favorites :D

I would LOVE to play Magic Carpet on the gp32... that's probably just in my dreams though
