Hello,

I've got some .smc files. I understand that those are raw SMC card data - How to use them? Thanks.

i see fire around you , i can tell.
I think you have to apologize quickly because you are talking about WAREZ.
If those .smc files ave been downloaded from gamepark (or here) then it is just demo for windows and a software must be with them (then its no warez, then i shall apologize).
But i doubt it's that...so...i think you will be soon in fire..

Hmm, I guess you are confused a bit since I never mentioned ANY WAREZ in my post. Files I have are ending in .smc. How do i use them? What is wrong asking this question? I guess you are trying to say that any person posting about iso or bin file extension are talking about WAREZ? ;)

well original .smc files are images of original gamepark games...
so they are likely to be warez.
you cant use them on your gp32. you can use them in geepee, the gamepark emulator.
but you cant really play them on geepee cos it runs only at 40mhz.

some .smc files are snes games like sam said, but yours are most likely warez...
pls dont ask how to use warez on your gp on this forums, youll just be flamed.

hope i could help you

On SNES, the .SMC means which device was used for dumping this rom.
SMC Stands for Super Magicom.

To sum up.. file extensions as a way of identifying files has never been really that good, but Microsoft keeps trainign peopel to think they are (which is annoying, since you end up with file extensions that are totally rediculous, just to be different from something else. Really, all pictures should be .picture say, and let the programs and OS figure out how to load them...)

Anyway, the .smc extension has been used by a half dozen things over the years, but most likely for you its a SNES ROM, or a SMC dump (or a misnamed Genesis ROM.. seen that too).

How big is it? If its 16MB or more its probabyl an SMC and chances are you shouldn't bring it up here ;) If its 2MB or 4MB or the like, could be a SNES rom..... feed it to a SNES emu and see :)

So funny the hypocrisy here about this sort of thing... people talk about playing their roms here all day long but ever bring up pirating commercial GP games and your ass gets handed to you.

I made the mistake of asking this question myself when I first got a GP and damn if my ass wasn't sore from the verbal lashing I got....

one day I hope someone will explain to me why we can talk about roms all day just not GP32 roms....

roms for other systems are for emulation on the gp32 and you maybe have the right to copy a rom that u own to the gp32.

but having a rom to a gamepark is different if you want the game you can play it natively. there is no need to have a gp32 emulator for the gp32 that would be pointless.

or maybe be you could even backup u gp32 games onto a .smc incase ur memory erases, but then you would have to use the same smc or gp32 to restore that backup, as its protected.

In anycase i dont see why you should try and use comercial gp32 games as it kills the community and even then most homebrew are better than the comercial gp32 games out there.

well much of that was really subjective or really not accurate to the scene at all(yep we all own the actual games to back up those 100's of roms), but you did hit one nail on the head... most commercial GP games aren't worth trying to pirate :D :p

there is a way but its really hard and you need to find a way to re-encrypt them to your gp32/smc

edit: I forget which game I was trying to do it to but I know it was a translated one for geepee but I still couldn't get it done :(

edit 2: don't ask me for the programs I deleted them a long time ago

true as well... the trouble you would go thru to get an .smc file would most likely not be worth the trouble at all. Is that one website still selling the games for $10 a pop? Probably worth the $10 to save the trouble. Cheers to DemonStar for actually give a good, informative answer :D

I kinda thought it went like this:

WAREZ = Games from systems that are still "ALIVE" i.e. PS2, PS1, XBOX, GC, PC, GP32, NGAGE, PSP, DS, etc...

ROMS = Games from "Dead" systems i.e. SNES/SFC, Gen, NES, Atari, PCE, WS, etc...

Basically if a game is still generating/able to generate profit for the people who created it, then it is a WARE. Copying it takes money from those people. This is what people get upset about, with good reason.

ROMS have basically had their day, and are now in a strange way, kind of looked at as "public property."

I think that these are the issues/facts in the ROMS vs. WAREZ debate. At least that is my understanding of it.

Also, the reason people on this website get all bent out of shape about .SMC WAREZ is obvious. We love the GP32 and, I can only speak for my self when I say this, but we hope/wish that the GP32 would have more commercial games (which are usually in .SMC format). Any piracy of these games seriously effects the probability that more commercial games will be made. Look how many games have already fled the console? The GP32 community is very tight, and we genuinely love this system and hope beyond hope that it blossoms. The purchase of games for the GP32 is one of the best things that can be done for the Gamepark and this should be the only games are obtained for it.

Remember Gamepark is way too small a compay to be able withstand the piracy of the few games it has.

I think that that about sums it up. I really hope I am not preaching. But anyone who has spent the crazy amounts of money that I have for this system, does it for a reason.

Please continue to support the GP32.

Also note my usual rant.. ROMS are not and never have been illegal; its transferring ROMS around which is usually illegal (though it varies by country); most countries and licenses don't give you the right to traffic the ROMS around, but if you rip them yourself you're 100% ethically and morally and legally clear.

But most peopel can't rip them easily.. but you can get the rights in many other ways too; you can buy roms from starroms.com for instance; or perhaps you bought some classic games on other carts or systems .. I know some of the PS2 Atari distributions have been opened up so you can run a proggy to read the ROMs from them. Further if you have those NES cards for the GameBoy Player or whatever it is, you can read the ROMs off the cards. Theres dozens of ways to legally own the roms, and many ways to get your purchased ROMs out of 'em.

That view is also very hypocritcal and is just flat out wrong. Sure it's a great way to look at it to try to make yourself feel better, but ask yourself this, do you think the companies that make those games agree with you? Do you think Nintendo goes so far out of the way to combat piracy of even their oldest games because it's amusing to them to spend a fortune doing so? And now please don't try to tell me you are so selective in what roms you put on your GP "oh I don't download any old Nintendo stuff, they are still making a profit on rereleases" Yeah right. The fact is that with any ROM, it is up to the owner(s) of the rights to that game whether they want it to be freely distrutable, and the fact is, most of them don't. Sure, not all of them make a big stink about going after people/websites that distribute them, but I'm sure if you were to go to any game developer company and say "hey do you mind if I just download some of your older games for free since you dont profit from them any more" the reply would be "HELL YES WE FRICKIN MIND!" A lot of these companies do at some point rerelease their older games in compilation titles for current systems or even in stand alone 'mini systems' (controllers with games built in) so the potential to make profit on these old games is almost always there. And any time you download or distribute a ROM of an older game you potentially take a bit out of that potential future profit!

I'm not talking about is it legal or not, here. I'm simply talking about whether it is 'right or wrong' to do. I'm not gonna hold to some odd 'piraters code of ethics' which says just because a certain game is old I can have it for free, but just because it's for a current system then that's wrong.... no, sorry, any rom you got for free is wrong, legal or not, UNLESS IT WAS FREELY DISTRIBUTED BY THE PEOPLE/COMPANY THAT OWNS THE RIGHTS TO IT OR YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED A COPY OF THE GAME HENCE HAVING THE RIGHT TO MAKE FREE BACKUPS FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY.

I can at least understand and partially agree with the idea about trying to keep the GP32 alive and supporting whatever efforts get made to create new games for it by paying for whatever titles do come out that you might want. In the same way I believe in donating to someone like Reesy for his great DrMD. We do want to keep the GP alive and viable as long as possible. Still, just be careful where you try to draw YOUR lines because the harder you try the more you usually end up contradicting yourself.
