Should The Gp2x Be Bought?

Cool at I checked it out and you're right: only 3.00 USD. Do they sell the SD Cards there too?
Unfortunately not :( I'd have bought a ton if they did heheh

ment the Gp3x device :p
if its translated to other languges
You mean the GP2X device :D But no, it doesn't come with different languages. Some rare games give you a language choice, but it's really not the rule for now.

is the linux source for the Gp2x open to public? cause i can translate it easy then

EDIT : cant compile the source as i dont know how to compile :D

I think most people who bought a GP2X were looking to play emulators, so a gp2x is a known video-game-for-old-people, like me... I enjoy playing new games, but I also enjoy much playing classics/vintage gaming, the only drawback I think is that it's absolutely NOT portable to listen to your mp3 files, but anyway you can buy a cheap memory-stick that use less power indeed..

The major problem involving GP2X is... the community!
A lot of l33t irc h4x0rs who are amused by the hypothesis of using linux with something, and then they start act cocky with anyone who knows they have a linux-powered-something

So be sure, even if it easier for some people to ask your questions, they probably are going to flame you instead
And it has nothing to do with your previous flames on this topic (altough you could have been researching a little bit more in fact), everywhere else it's going to happen the same way with you/other people

I see your other topic has been closed, probably so you wouldn't die from the flames.

Windows? NO.

There is however Qtopia (linux "windows" for PDA computors)

X11 has been written for the GP2X, it supplies the necessary "windows" interface for the Linux Desktops or programs wanting to output to a standard place.

Try GPE, it has programs and runs on top of the X11 interface to make it like a "real" linux PC, I have had my USB Keyboard/mouse adaptor on it and it is almost useful as a full PC.

I would wish for these first before wanting windows (just so you [and all the newbs on here, this includes old-timers who don't know about this stuff] can "research" some more I have made my sig a anti-ignorance banner, click on the first link to see what the main chip in the GP2X really is, and note that it is fully Windows CE compatible, I think it would be most useful to get or build [you can get an evaluation kit that "makes" windows CE to try on your PDA/portable device] a copy of that, because win95 will always be slower than a 486 on the bochs [have you ever run win95 on a 486?])

PS, never say heezie ever again. Ever. Real computer nerds don't say heezie, or heezy, or Leet or 733t, but that is another story.

Oh and, maybe someone can help me with this, But I would love to learn to program for Devices like the GP2X and stuff, it's kind of my dream.. I mean I would start with simple things first but I would like to know where you'd begin from the very beginning, which route I would take to learn what I need to be able to do this stuff. sorry if I sound like an idiot but I feel this is a legitimate question! How steps do I take to learn... btw I am 15 (16 in a month)
Hey, welcome aboard!
I'm 16 and I'm also learning to program games (I've actually released one for the gp2x, called Extraterrestres)

I would recommend starting by getting a good c/c++ guide or book (c++ is an extension of c, either will do)

You may be better off with a free online guide. I have a VB book and a C++ book and I haven't gotten halfway through either of them. After about seven chapters I get bored. The first seven or so chapters give me a basic understanding of the language, and after that I go exploring on my own. I find that I learn things much better by diving into the code than by reading about them, even if I make a lot of mistakes. However, you will be completely lost if you don't get some basic knowledge of programming. After that, you can probably figure everything else out from either experimenting or looking it up online.

The gp2x community is actually quite good. Because it is larger than the gp32 community, it has more flaming and troll problems, but it also has a lot more good things such as coders. The gp2x community is much better than the psp "community", although I'm not sure if it is better than the DS community (I've never been a part of it).

The gp2x community definitely has its problems (which we should work on), but it isn't nearly as bad as many other comparable ones (PSP community, Gizmondo community).

Sorry. I guess what I'm trying to get out of this machine is exactly what can't be gotten out of it. What about older versions of Windows (1.0, 3.1, 3.11)? Oh, no wait. If DOS is "likely" (as said on the GP2X wiki) then I guess any Windows, no matter how primitive, is possible. Oh, well. Let's play Duke3D and Rise of the Triad (soon!)!

Well Kyalami, the PC emulator Bochs does run, and emulates dos/windows/etc (I've seen screenshots of '95), but it is too slow to have any real point (old text adventures/turn based strategies at somewhat painful speeds perhaps?) and it most likely always will be.

But you don't always have to emulate a platform to run a particular game, many have been ported so they can work natively (such as Quake, Duke Nukem, etc).

The only advice I will give you is this:

Take DaveC's (and others like him) posts with a grain of salt, that is, don't always take them too seriously. Okay, so he is right about N64 emulation being simply a dream, but he isn't always right about everything. I won't go into repeating the various examples of this ;)

Anyways the fact of the matter is, it IS possible to write an emulator on any platform for any platform. However, that does not mean it will run at a desirable performance. The rule of thumb is that you need about 10 times the power of the original hardware, but this is hard to determine (clock speed/MHZ means nothing across different types of CPU) and is not always true (programmers sometimes work miracles).

AKA, overclocked ARM9 @ 250mhz would "rule of thumb" be a 386 (maybe 486 without an FPU) at about 25mhz.

Think how many games are enjoyable on a 386 @ 25mhz and you will see where we are going with these arguments.

Please take everything I say with a grain of salt (IE I can be cruelly and sarcasticly honest with the facts, and even sometimes wrong about the facts. I usually come around and apologize if I am wrong though :).)

Welcome to the forums, please don't expect this to be a magic box, it is a fairly weak ARM9 (No FPU or Java accceleration) with no 3D accelerating chips whatsoever and the barest 2D blitter that is buggy so far for some emus. IE retro emulation is possible, but with limits (in our minds that stops at SNES for the popular systems, heck even the Amiga is being a bitch due to lots of specialty chips that are all doing something.)

I like that you are enthusiastic, but please use the enthusiasm to drive your curiosity and learn more about things on your own instead of logging on and bugging us needlessly, of course we are glad to answer simple questions with proper respect (provided they haven't been asked 60 times this last month alone) but please don't abuse the forums.

Sorry, if I've been too much of a noob lately. I just want the GP2X to be really cool. I thought Windows could just act as a nice addition. I understand you can't emulate an entire OS with just 400 mhz, and no 3D card. But still, sometimes I think that the GP2X would get cooler as more platforms are emulated, needless if they are full speed or no speed (maybe I went too far). But still, you have to admit that Windows could be a nice addition. but, we have to focus on GBA, Snes, and PSX first, then we can move on to more complicated stuff, a la 3DO, Atari jaguar, and Windows!
P.S.: Technically, would Windows 3.11 work at a somewhat usable speed? Once more, just as a cool addition, not as the focus for the GP2X. Just asking!
P.S.2:Is a Command and Conquer game possible? Possible, not as the focus of the GP2X, or the highest priority for emulation(s). Once more, just asking!

I mean an interpreter for it, that is. Much like Duke3D, Doom, and Quake has been ported.
P.S.: Can PrBoom run Doom II TCs/Add-ons/Mods?

The reason I wanted the GP2X:

-because I didn't want something mainstream
-because I like old systems and though that the fact I could be able to emulate them all, free
of charge. would just be plain cool
-because I could see videos and photos, hear music, and play free video games
-countless other reasons that randomly spawn
SO GET IT, IT DOES THAT STUFF.

END OF LINE

Edit: nothing like some uppity noobs to get us old-timers backs up in no time

Er, you are no old-timer. (Nor am I.) Just calm down a little!

We don't have 400mhz, no-one is using the second (200mhz) processor and those who try claim it will likely take a stroke of genius to make it help like a 300mhz single processor would right now.

Did you see my post about the Windows?
There is Windows CE that will run already, X windows for linux WITH GPE, NK has ported Qtopia, a useful windows-like linux desktop system for PDA's and pocket PC's (I have tried the last two, they are FREE for download in the Archive, I used my mouse in both :)). I think you have Windows and x86 confused. Windows is useful, there are already things as useful. And x86 code Will NOT run fast enough for you to use silly windows Apps and Games.

See if it has gone open source, then see if someone has ported it to a PDA or Cellphone with an ARM processor, go from there and make a port. Otherwise NO. Duke Doom and Quake are ports from original source code, NOT interpreters.

Yes, on the GP2X we are old-timers because we have over 6-months more than the noobs do on the GP2X side of things. I have had 3 editions and ordered the pre-order before I joined this board. I claim the right to be an "old-timer" considering the turn-over of Computer technology today.

I promise to calm down, but I stand by my right to tear noobs like this guy a new one with wit and sarcasm when they cop an attitude to DaveC, I understand some may not like it when DaveC is totally honest, but he has actually contributed and is intelligent, he works to improve things that he has a problem with, I count at least 5 bits of software and hardware he has done to improve the Stick.

And this guy also claims to be learned on subjects about which he clearly has no knowledge, such as what an emulator does, how they work, why they go so slow, what hardware is in retro-consoles, and what a HLE and Low-Level Emulator do.

PS, he doesn't seem to understand that Windows is unneeded because we already have desktop programs with PC functionality.

I see where your thinking differs from mine now.

You think it would be cool if everything from the past would be emulated on this system.

While I agree to a point (N64 sounds fun even if a pipe-dream, and I want to play NFS 3 on this at some point :)), I want to have VGA out to truly enjoy the console, it is fully supported, geuss I will have to put in a "mod" to connect the last two wires necessary for the full RGB and H/sync.

I want to see new and better games on this console, like the game the pocketeers have been building for years, a futuristic 3D car racing adventure.

I am blown away when after playing the Atari-SNES-Genesis and videos, MP3s and Quake I switch to Vektar and suddenly the game is cool and fresh and I am no longer looking at 8-bit and 16-bit era graphics, I have high-speed high-quality graphics and sound with explosively good and sharp graphics.

A wire-frame tron style RPG or Shooter or Racing game would fully kick so much ass right now (anyone ever played GL Tron? I want to see that in wireframe on here, the guy could likely port it if we ever get a tinyGL library of some sort :) :)).

I want to see new fast stuff, not old stuff again. I think after a point the talent is just wasted on emulation.

I seem to find your focus on emulation is making you seem like a poser computer geek, real computer geeks love open-source, Linux and homebrew 2D and 3D games.

PS, See the ZeEngine or whatever demo (scroll the start page back a couple news items, look for the silver cow, see the youTube video, THAT IS AWESOME, I was running that and the guy's new scene demo and I must say I love his 3D work.

Edit: forgot to mention I was also using the TV-Out and it was so cool to see it on a TV.

Guess I'll just wait until I actually get the GP2X; meanwhile I'll just stick with books and school! I'll visit the GP2X Archive from time to time though!
