Shenmue 3 Kickstarter has begun

Boring.

The gameplay will not be able to be as quality as other games that have come after Shenmue 1 & 2.

Back in Decemeber 1999 it was the pioneer but SEGA waited to long and now heaps of other games are similar to Shenmue (but they're better in almost ever conceivable manner).

Shenmue 3's graphics looks shit compared to todays standards (even F4 graphics are a million times better) and the voice acting is shit as always.

Dear SEGA/Y's,

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE.

Btw...

If people want to play the most advance Shenmue type of game (with the most advance world ever created via Creation Engine 3.0) this generation...then play Fallout 4 when it's released. :)

Yeah, I was about to say the same eventhough I'm a fan.  14 damn years is a long waiting time for Shenmue 3.  Part of my soul for Shenmue 3 has died.  I am also disappointed they release it for PC and PS4 but not the original Dreamcast!  I don't really care for the top notch graphics that PS4 and PC give,  I want the Dreamcast graphic quality.  I want Shenmue 1, 2, and 3 all on the Dreamcast.  Not backing this thing.

Well, I am not saying I don't want it to succeed.  I really do so I am glad the number is jumping up every second!  I am just disappointed they don't release for the original Dreamcast as well.

I still use mine on a monthly basis. I would definitely buy it on Dreamcast.

He was already old when he did Shenmue. Gee, can you stop with the stupid comments for a second ? :)
I was genuinely/seriously looking for him. He was 43 back in the Shenmue 2 days, it's not old.

Who would buy it for the Dreamcast? What kind of stupid idea would that be ? Nobody uses it anymore apart from hardcore retro fans.
Did you read my post?  I said "Dreamcast as well," so whoever want PS4/PC version they get the PS4/PC version.  I want the dreamcast version so I will get the dreamcast version.  There are more retro fans than you would think.  Also, if you want the full Shenmue experience, you have to play Shenmue 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast anyway and nott just watch the stupid movie like they did in Xbox version of Shenmue 2.

And why bother making 2 versions ? It's as much work as making two games.

It's not like Shenmue was ever made to be stuck on Dreamcast forever - it was on Dreamcast because it was the best game console to make it on at that time. It was supposed to have the best graphics possible, not to be stuck forever in Dreamcast level of graphics.

That's old for game developers at that time. He's one of the veterans in the industry. He made Super Hang On back in the 80s.

I would definitely buy it on Dreamcast.
Yeah, with the other 3 remaining Dreamcast users.

Nobody would be able to do a Kickstarter if it were only for Dreamcast users. Face it, the Dreamcast is dead.  Yeah, there are still games made for it, but they sell in the thousands. Time to upgrade your hardware.

Maybe they should have made a $10m goal instead of $2m?

Does not matter, they will get what they get anyway. 2 MUSD was anyway too small of a budget to make a full game.

For reference the original Shen Mue's were thought to have cost between 70 and 100 Million USD (at the time! adjust that to inflation!) to make.

This being said, you can make a ShenMue-like game nowadays for much cheaper, tech wise.

I'm not interested in Shenmue specifically, but this is a great move and I hope it sets a precedent which other companies follow.

The trend until now has been for series creators to make spiritual successor knock-offs of their franchises that have been neglected by the companies who own them. That kind of sort of works (in theory at least) for something like Megaman or Castlevania but it's no good for something like Shenmue where the fans want to see the rest of the story and need a legitimate sequel. I don't know if Sega is involved with the KS or they merely let go of the rights but either way, good on them. Maybe Konami and Capcom can follow this example and either use KS to test a proper series revival or let some other developers who are passionate about the series do it. Here's hoping that we see Suikoden get this treatment, but I'm not holding my breath.

That said, $2m is a pittance for a game like this. Didn't the original Shenmue cost $70m 15 years ago? Granted, it went through a lot of development churn to get there and maybe more modern technologies can be leveraged to amortize the cost but that's still pretty meager. Could they have independent funding in addition to the KS money like Bloodstained does? Or were they just hoping to actually get way more than $2m (which they clearly will)?
