Sega 32x Emulation

On that same topic, has anyone here developed the technology to move at faster than light speed?

I rephrase the question. Are the technical challenges between a Genesis and a 32X emulator so big to overcome? If someone can code a PlayStation emulator, there must be some hope for the 32X. I would be happy to help any coder interested in such a project.

Yes, i have.

Hi everybody. Is there anybody working on a Sega 32X emulator?
32X emulation isnt likely, due to the complexity of it. Not only do you need to emulate a Genesis, on top of that there are two 32-bit hitachi processors at 23MHz each (plus sound hardware, etc). Playstation hardware is easier to emulate due to a single processor.

Thanks a lot for your response. I will look at 32X emulator for Windows and see if there is any chance to translate some of the routines.

Would it be easier to write the emulator on Linux and convert it for the GP2X?

Don't bother trying to get 32X to work.

It already requires a decent PC to do fullspeed 32X. The problem is that the 32X is so damn complex. On a technical scale, you have to emulate a couple processors and extra video hardware. Personally, I don't think the GP2X has the power to get Genesis emulation and just one of the two processors running.

It took four or five years just to get a decent framerate for 32X. Hell, I'm saying this when I tried playing 32X games on a 2GHz machine and only got 10, 20 frames.

The Xbox can emulate 32X fullspeed so I would say it's possible but not likely... Too much work
I don't know what framerate should be on the real hardware but 3d games are playable...

My second favorite system is the MegaCD. Since it has one processor, it could be feasible to emulate it.

The 32x didn't have any decent games anyway :)

Yeah, this pretty much sums it up.. There are a couple good games, but 90% of whats on the 32X are ports (and available on other easier emulated systems).

1) Isn't the XBOX 800MHz x86 if I remember right? GP2X will always be 200MHz. Never enough to do 32X, not even with dynamic recompilers.

2) Sega/Mega CD also is VERY unlikely. If I remember correctly, there are two (or more) extra chips, including one Z80. Anyway, the Z80 is a hell slow to emulate alone, add to that the other extra chips(s) and the original Genesis emulator... (yes you need to emulate a full Genesis PLUS a Mega CD. duh.)

1) The XBox is a 733mHz Pentium III clone. And you're right, the GP2X is just 200mHz, except for when it's actually 400mHz (and in the future, likely 533mHz or up to 600mHz). Also, the ARM platform isn't really comparable to x86 in processing power (ARM outclasses it by a mile).

2) Oh it's quite possible ;) There's some more detailed documentation around here, I'm sure... maybe check the Wiki.

That being said, 32x emulation is likely impossible past a tech-demo.

Are you saying that the ARM's in the GP2X are "limited" by 200 to 400 mhz? Or maybe that future editions will have the faster ARM's? Or, even better, it would be possible to open the GP2X up and do a chip swap yourself?

EDIT: Spelling

I think iignotus thinks that there are two 200Mhz CPUs with a combined performance of 400Mhz, he's wrong.
In which way aren't they?

Playable 32X emulation will never happen, just cos its old doesn't mean its doable :(
I know, and that's what I said.

On the note about there being no good games, I highly enjoyed Star Wars Arcade, but other than that, it's pretty much useless. I think onbly 30 games were ever released for it, and most of them were ill-conceived and had many bugs.

On the other hand, I would love to see a Sega CD emulator for the GP2X, just so I can play Sonic CD.
