Sdhc Card Storage / Portability / Protection

"DOS is going to need a lot of RAM if I want those kickbacks from Kingston"
"DOS needs some extra RAM so it can spy on you and report back to the RIAA"
"DOS uses the RAM as a high-speed cache for virtual memory stored on the hard disk"

What's all this about a topic?
Well, you could also store SD cards in like paper envelopes which are in turn stored in your pocket... or something.
Like I said, I'm only planning to really use 2 at a time.

I found a few more options, (all similar) .

www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod579.htm

www.amazon.com/Lowepro-DMC-Z-Wallet...0001Y0OY2

www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00...xinternaA

www.amazon.com/Vanguard-Di-Holder-Aluminum-Di-Holder/dp/B00022OB8S/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_1

Cant find a case with more than 8 SD cards yet though. I guess 2 x cases to get 16 will be fine.

Anyone with first hand experience with any of these (or the pelican ones) commenting would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Didn't Bill Gates say something similar about DOS and 640kb of Ram.
Not in the way most people think.
Now you've just gone an got me intrigued..............

When Dos was designed, it was only an 8 bit system. It was given a maximum of 1024K of addressable memory (1 meg of RAM, max)
But addressable memory is not always RAM. How do you communicate with the video card, or other peripherals? The easiest way is to assign parts of memory to them. When DOS was first designed, they were looking at systems with 64K of RAM. The stretch from 64K to 640K seemed huge! So what they did was divide the addressable memory into 640K for physical RAM, and the top 384K for addressable video memory, and anything else that needed it. They figured they had some time for systems to expand and adapt before seeing anything with that much RAM. They figured wrong. But that's the origin of the misquote: a line needed to be drawn somewhere below 1024, and he chose 640. The original spec called for it being divided equally: 512 physical and 512 for extras, but Bill actually worked to push it to the 640/384.
Incidentally, this is the exact same reason you can only get 3.6ish gigs of RAM in XP. A 32 bit system can only address 4 gigs of RAM*, but you still need to save some addressable memory for the video card, and video cards are huge now so they take a lot off the top.

And that's why it's important to have a plastic case for your SD cards!

(*) Without using some clever tricks that don't always work.

The 2 that actually linked properly look good, though. And similar. I don't suppose there's going to be a lot of variation in the area of "case to hold SD cards"

Sorry about the broken links, I have a bit of trouble with these messages and editting sometimes.

As you confirms, all a bit similar. I actually wish there was a 16 card holder arround or a larger case like the Pelican to hold ALL the stuff with a section for SD cards. Wishing!

Thanks for that info. Very interesting and makes alot of sense.

I was looking at making something like this to protect my SD cards the other week..

CODE
http://www.instructables.com/id/Pipeski_s-Wallet-SD-Holder/

CODE
http://www.instructables.com/id/Memory_Card_Caddy/

CODE
http://www.instructables.com/id/Credit-Card-SD-Holder/

the first one looks good, the second one looks impractical, and the third one looks like it could be decent with some work.

I might try to make something out of cardboard, like the cardboard knife holder I improvised to sheathe my cheese-slicing knife.

The Proporta Memory Wallet might be a good choice if you don't pan to get too many cards:

Also, they have an aluminum memory card holder that can hold up to 3 cards, and fit in your wallet.

Does anybody know of a nice origami SD holder with room for at least 4 cards? :D

Heh, I just shove them in my regular wallet or pocket. They're pretty tough, I figure if I'm carrying too many around I should get larger ones or slim down on the inevitable "too much data" I'm carrying. Normally the card just stays in the device.

Only time I've killed a memory card is running over it with an office chair on carpet by accident. On purpose would likely have destroyed it too.

One reason I stay away from anything smaller than normal SD (say, mini-SD, micro-SD, any other small format) is that I lose them immediately. They even get stuck in little folds in the pocket, and they'll fall out of a zipped wallet. Full-size SD is the optimal size as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for all the feedback. It looks like not too many people are actually going to have seperate cards for say different emulators etc, dosbox etc. operating systems, and bother to print card stickers for them.

That or most people just think that they wont until the time comes, then may find it more convenient and usefull?

I guess it is a matter of preference, get 2 very large cards, fill them with the good stuff, update them with the current (movies, music, emulators etc. etc. on a regular basis etc.

or

Get the cards as you can afford them (or just because of the preferred sizes and costs/value - i.e. a 4gb card might be perfect for all Gameboy roms for example (just a guess). Whack a sticker on it and your done - subject to replacing the emulator with the latest one as and when it comes out.

Not sure which way I'll go but do like the idea of multiple, set-up once cards etc. Especially when to go out and buy 2 x 32gb cards is not that cheap etc., especailly for the fast ones.

I love the idea for it- I think it's quite cute, but it's really not practical

I don't know if this is technically origami since there is a bit of cutting, but I found this on a quick google search. CODE

Nah, it's not true origami. :\ However, that's probably the closest thing to origami you're going to find.
