256GB didn't last long at all, did it?

At the rate technology is going...1TB cards could be here before 2016?

Pyra, here I come!!!

Nice! Of course the price is ridiculous, just like the initial price of the first 256GB cards.

The good news is that now 256GB cards will probably become cheaper, since they're no longer top-of-the-line.

$800? The fake card makers will be doubling their efforts for a slice of that pie.

I still understand why the news is on GSM arena... it's been probably more than 5years that no GSM can take a full sized SD...

They're quite expensive. Why spend $8 (or more) on 512MB when you can spend $15 on 16GB? Or more comparably, why spend $8 on 512MB when you can spend $8 on 4GB?

@Wizard F'ing Stan

Well the whole joke was people thinking that it's a 512GB SD card.. not MB.. and accidentally purchasing it..  Although I could be missing that you are being sarcastic..

There could be some old hardware that doesn't like high capacity cards. There is at least some that doesn't do SDHC for sure, so you'd have to buy 2GB card (max for pre-SDHC) even if it's more expensive than larger ones.

Is there a limit of what can be used in the Pandora? I think I remember something about a limit, but maybe I'm wrong?

The limit is only speed, not size. You won't get transfers faster than ~15MB/s on the Pandora, even with the fastest cards. On the Pyra the speed limit will be ~95MB/s. There's no size limit.

Isnt this when wizardStan eats his hat?

I wonder if anyone will buy 256GB anymore. It seems those who bought them dont care about price, and will now get 512GB instead.

Hopefully something becomes feasible. Looking for tests.

I got questions like this when I was being too cheap to buy PCMCIA cards.  In my case, it was because the OS of the device could only handle cards of a certain size without a driver, so I needed the smaller card for the driver.  Even then, I still had a max size below what most people want now, as well as the issue of the type of flash used, which I have now forgotten the details of.  In the end I ended up going with CF, which I can use for multiple purposes, and an adapter.  Now that I think about it, I also have something that requires a mini SD of 2GB or smaller.

Well, I already typed it, so now everyone has to read it.

1TB in my Pandora/Pyra, nice :)
Buy in bulk and offer them in the store.  Wait, that would tie up a lot of money...  It would be cool if we could all have a TB, though.  I don't need it, since my primary Pandora card is 32GB and not too full, and I swap out the secondary one if I am using an emulator, or something.  Those other cards usually live in my Everdrives.

On the Pyra the speed limit will be ~95MB/s.
Can anyone think of a practical situation where this would be too slow?

I know what you were saying, I wasn't commenting on that. I'm not being sarcastic, these are legitimate card prices from actual retailers. I highly doubt there's been a sudden drive in 512MB cards because of this announcement, I fully suspect that that's been the price for quite a while, especially when you look at 128MB cards ($3) and 256MB cards ($6). Even 32MB cards are anywhere between $3 and $20 on ebay, the more expensive of which are probably trying to capitalize on the 32GB confusion.Agreeing 100% with what you said, I fully expect to see 512MB cards in the dozens of dollars range as these become more prominent.

When you're moving data around (e.g. making a backup or copying something from one card to another), there is never such a thing as "fast enough". Moving 500GB of data at 95MB/s takes about 1.5 hours. Is that too slow? Depends on your patience, I guess.

Faster is always better.

That said, I think for the near future, 95MB/s is probably still faster than what most cards support anyway. Sure, there are cards that can read faster than that, but when doing a big transfer, you're mostly limited by the write speed anyway, and most cards can't write that fast.

For things like video playback etc, that read speed is more than enough -- it's even enough for uncompressed 720p video.
