Rlyeh's Sega Genesis/megadrive W.i.p.

everyone talks about getting more smc's you should check out the terapin hard drive you can write back and forth to the smc and store everything on the drive...
so if you want to play another game delete the first put a new one on...i love it especially for movies...

Will it need to be 132 MHZ for sound full speed and 66 MHZ for full speed w/o sound?
It should be 132 with most games. No chance on the 66 with fs0 or 1 maybe 2

I know Rlyeh is using fdave's Cyclone core for the 68000 emulation, but what about the Z80? Reesy has an ASM core for that, is he going to use his? Two ASM cores would be soo damn fast (I think?) and maybe make high speed with sound possible... :) :)

And iamellow, what is this terapin hard drive, can you give some more details?

Whether or not that's the thing, sign me up for once next time I've got money - with one of those and a PCMCIA smartmedia adapter... *drooooool*.

No longer would I need another card for every movie I wanted...

EDIT: Or not... the thing's $299!

New SMCs would be a *much* cheaper.

if you look at the last 2 posts of this page:

http://www.gp32x.de/board/index.php?showt...&hl=reesy&st=30

You will see that Reesy offered you the z80 ASM core...

eBay is your friend.

If I felt like taunting you, I would've used the Buy-It-Now option already. :D

jesus that is the biggest discount i have ever seen
as soon as i get enought money i am buying one
did u like tape it to the back of ur gp32

i have been using the terapin drive for awhile it great to have roms on the go and switch out when i want to plus it has other features....you will definetly enjoy it you can also fin it at tigerdirect

Sorry about continuing this off topic goodness but when it mentions the os as linux..is this the only os it supports or can you have this beauty under window$?

well, I think 10 GB is way too much for only a gp32 use (but this thing can do a lot of things), but the whole idea is just fantastic. So I've searched and found a shop with a very low price : super saving depot.

edit : they ship only to north america.

See you in the off-topic world :D

About rlyeh's fgen and fdave's gigadrive, I'm very excited to see who's gonna make the best emulator, since the 68000 core is the same (maybe the z80's too)
this cooperation/competition might give the perfect genesis emulator.

since the last non-public betas, I can say (apart from some graphic glitches) that fGen is a better emu than Giga's : )

Nowadays, the Z80 is turned off, so you won't get any sfx, just music. And it slow down too much the game. So we must just wait to optimize fGen so that sound can be on, but.... maybe Z80 off.... :_(

fGen will be by definition - it's a port of a complete Genesis/Megadrive emulator!
(Whereas Giga isn't... yet :) Plus it has nice quick graphics rendering (which might possibly be tile based - not sure...). It's a nice little emulator for sure

Just to clarify the sound of the Megadrive, it typically works like this:

The 68000 uploads a sound program to the Z80, and then starts the Z80 running.

The Z80 then talks to two sound chips, a 6-channel YM2612 (like an old Casio synth) and a 4-channel primitive SN76496 (more like a beeper). There is also a DAC for writing sample data (think WAVs, MODs and XMs).

Some games (but not many) talk to the YM2612 and SN76496 directly. Pretty much all of them all of them however use the Z80 to output Drum or other sample sound effects to the DAC.

So it depends on the game. Some need the Z80 (or Z80 faking :)) to even start up, because they are waiting for the Z80 to acknowledge (e.g. Alien 3)
95% need the z80 for sound. and all of them need the sound chips for sound (naturally!) :)
