Linux Format, that is Future Publishing, right? That's a publishing company I avoid like the plague. "Future Music" - Crap. "The Mix" - Crap, since about the same time they where bought by FP. You recognize Future Publishing mags in the magazine stands by checking who puts a pair of tits centre on the front page, no matter whether the mag is about gadgets, music or stamp collecting. They don't seem to do this on Linux Format, but that probably is because half their readership wouldn't recognize them as such, and the other half would die from sudden oversexualisation.
Avoid Future Publishing. Always.
For some strange reason, their gaming mags Edge and GamesTM (which is also FP now, if I remember correctly) are actually decent, and are written by people who actually know anything about their subject matter and who are able to use words with more than two syllables. They are the exception to the general rule.
But Linux Format is very similar to their "music technology" mags, and I imagine they have the same review policy - We'll give you rave reviews if you buy ads.
It has to be said that mp3 playback in any of the players suffers from crapness - I don't suppose anyone's found a way to stop channels from flipping left/right yet?
I can't imagine that the stick entirely ruins the GP2X experience, but they seem to dwell on it like it's a completely deal-breaking factor. I like the GP2X-imprinted-on-thumb cap.
Sphinxter: It's British English, 'a doddle' means 'a simple task'.
Well damn, it was an even better review than I thought. Personally I think it's pretty good, after thinking it's off and then using the test function on the main menu and finding the joystick functioning fine I stop blaming the hardware even though a new joystick cap can feel like a whole new machine if it's worn. Typically hardware is or it isn't, sounds more like software timing issue to me, they never say what they were playing.
Not taking my own advice, I was playing beats of rage with the dragon ball z pak.
Unfortunately they get their cue from people in this board. Plenty here compare it to the PSP and DS (and automagically assume it's better) while single handedly putting them down along with people who either use them or don't know what a GP2X is. The Linux elitist mentality is ever so slightly prevalent here.
Presumably once Open2X is ready to go people can start buying GP2X units, loading them with this firmware, kitting them out for end users with all the best GP2X software and selling them on. Obviously GPH don't know their arse from their elbow so it's a necessary evil.
Caveat : Once again I'll make it clear I love these forums and my GP2X and no, I don't own a PSP or DS!
