Can anyone tell me where to go to get a Quake 2 engine for Linux? I found all kinds of documentation from around 2002 that is in no way relevant today. One that can connect to people running the standard Windows clients.

If you go to this (http://www.markshan.com/thesinraven/linux_quake_2_v.3.20.htm)website, you'll see a 5.86MB download which looks like the real deal...

quake2-3.20-glibc-i386-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz

If you that's not what you're looking for, maybe this will do - it looks like it's for Linux and Windows clients --->

Edit #4???  Another possibility - I realize that you're looking for an ENGINE, may be a lead here, but you'd have to "register" to download it--->  http://quake2lithium.com/lithdownloads/viewcategory/3

Everything is so old, most of the websites are gone. I've gotten closest with kmquake2, I think. It's non-standard code so I'm having to go in and make changes but at least it's progressing.

Seriously, it's like 2008 hit and everyone just completely lost interest in Quake 2, which would be understandable considering it's age except there's still an active developer community around the original Quake with Debian packages and everything. Quake 1 and Quake 3 have a lot of information everywhere, but there's just nothing relevant about Quake 2.

Yeah, sometimes the links just aren't there anymore.  People get disinterested in projects over time if there's not an active community around them, or the game in question.  Sometimes people have real life stuff going on.  It's only natural.  I just feel that I need to fight "that" feeling when it comes to the Pandora.  I hope that this living legacy will live on for a very long time...VIVA la Pandora!  It's a truly INTERNATIONAL phenomenon no one knows about...ha ha ha.  I hope that you find what you're looking for, WizardStan.  You always bring good things to the community.   :)

People don't play Quake 2 any more?

I certainly do! In fact one of the prime reasons for getting a Pandora was so I could blast around the Playstation version of Q2!

A group of us still play the Playstation Q2 multi-player, 4 player with a multitap in a tiny corner of the screen.

What a game. IMO all FPS games these days seem to be too expansive or war simulator/collaborative/strategy style. I'd love to see a new Quake/Doom, going back to the original concept of arcade-style FPS... a small map, limited weapons, high speed, low gravity, no character-specific abilities. Just running around with a grenade launcher :D

There's still some players online, but i think the level is extremely high.
