Prog Rock Nub

Wow... glad to see so many people like Rush as much as I do! <3

Radiohead I'll go along with, but U2?? I would consider them rock/pop rock. Have you ever tried to PLAY one of their songs? They take like 3 minutes to learn... less than the songs themselves. Unless there's some period in U2's history that I'm missing here...
A style of music's definition generally has nothing to do with how difficult the music is. U2 is clearly progressive rock; they are a rock band, but also progress to other styles of music that are not straight, simple rock. It doesn't matter if you like them or not, either. In fact, Radiohead is much more on the border of being prog rock than U2 is. A genre is indiscriminatory.
Err.. ok?? I would argue that a style of music has quite a bit to do with how hard it is to play. And I think you're contradicting yourself there a bit with the U2 definetely being progressive, then saying that Radiohead is way more progressive. I'm sure it sounded better in your head, but I'm not quite following
I never said I didn't like them either, I'm saying I wouldn't clump them with the likes of Rush, Kansas, Floyd, Yes, etc etc...
All the bands you've listed have very little in common with a band like U2 or common definitions of prog rock in general. A number of them are Black/Death/Heavy Metal and barely even rock. The most notable exception, though, is Coheed and Cambria -- a very good, new, progressive rock band. Though some of their stuff from the days Shabutie is awkward and poor, Good Apollo has some excellent tracks on it ;)

Sorry I didn't make it blatantly obvious that I was no longer talking about the specific genre of progressive ROCK, but progressive styles that have a basis in rock music ;)

Admittedly, my first post probably had more of the "progressive styles that have a basis in rock music" than I was thinking, but if someone is trying to get a taste for progressive rock, I would imagine that they might be interested in other things a little less "mainstream". Besides, how many times do you really need to recommend Rush? ;)

Aardvark

Jerusalem
Spriguns
T.2.

You should check out an album called "Sometimes God Hides: The Young Person's Guide to Discipline", which has an excellent collection of various prog rock songs on.

The last 6 on that list are quite rare, so you will probably have to get them off bittorrent, or some such thing. I hear there is a torrent with those 6 all together

I'm not quite sure how you got from U2 is not prog rock to hateful flame, but take a chill pill. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone's is different.

I would like for you to somehow prove that.
And I think you're contradicting yourself there a bit with the U2 definetely being progressive, then saying that Radiohead is way more progressive.
I didn't say Radiohead was more progressive. What I said was contrary, in fact. I said they're on the border of being a progressive rock band, because they don't follow the stereotypes of what prog rock is nearly as closely as U2 does. They're much more expirmental and technical, at least what I've heard of them.
I never said I didn't like them either, I'm saying I wouldn't clump them with the likes of Rush, Kansas, Floyd, Yes, etc etc...
I didn't say you didn't like them either, and if you had understood my comment in the first place, you'd see that I'm not comparing Radiohead closely to Kansas or Yes.

And you could make the argument that all heavy metal descends from jazz, or even earlier styles of music like classical. However, at some point, you need to draw a line between genres. So don't figure you have to make anything "blatantly obvious", just think before replying.
but if someone is trying to get a taste for progressive rock, I would imagine that they might be interested in other things a little less "mainstream".
Who's mainstream? U2? Sure they are, but what bearing does that have on how progressive they are, or how important they would be to someone wanting to explore the genre? Yes is incredibly popular where I live, a lot of poeple I know have been to their concerts... are they not mainstream because they're not featured in an iPod commercial? Does being 'underground' give any more cache to a band, or give them any more artistical talent?
Besides, how many times do you really need to recommend Rush? ;)
You know, just the once that I actually did recommend them. But if you want to count higher than that for some reason, that's fine too.

It's only because I don't like him. I probably should have bitten my tongue though. You offer good advice.

Looks like I upset this poor gentleman folks!

Yes, you do upset me. I don't like who you are, I don't like who you were, and I don't like the fact that you're a liar.
