Powering The Break Out Board

I have had my gp2x (mkII o/c 270mhz version)
and breakout box for just over 2 weeks now.
When I got them, I did a quick check that they both worked.
I connected the bob and put batteries in the gp2x, and plugged a
usb stick in. The gp2x powered the bob, and I was able to browse
the usb stick. I also tested it with a mains adaptor, and all was fine.

I hadn't tried the bob since, until tonight, and can't get the gp2x
to power it either with batteries or the mains adaptor.
I also tried powering the bob (with no batteries in the gp2x) and
it won't power the gp2x.

If I power the bob with the mains adapter and put batteries in
the gp2x, then I can get them to work together.

The only thing I can think of that is different is that I upgraded
to firmware 2.1, but I can't see how that would affect the power.
(ie with a MKII, you should be able to power it from the bob)

So, is one or both of them faulty?

hmm, you are still using the same usb stick right?

yeh, but the main thing is the BOB has a power led, that doesn't
come on unless I plug the mains adapter into it as well.
once it's powered up it works ok, although I haven't tested
every port.

Is it not true that the BOB needs its own power?

The BOB manual implies the MkII is different:

Old GP2X
Connect Adaptors to both
GP2X and Board, or put
rechargeable batteries into
GP2X instead of Adaptor.
If adaptor is not connected
to Interface board, GP2X
will not start

New GP2X
You may connect Adaptor to
GP2X only or Interface
Board only.

also, you would hope that the new
"bob in a case" docking station would power the GP2x
and itself.

yep, the mkII's should be able to power the bob, only when atttaching low powerconsuming devices though.

If you haven't done so, try downgrading as it was working with 2.0.0 for you.

I think we should make clear a few points:

1) You can not power GP2X by BOB.
2) Only BOB can be powered by GP2X.
3) Low powered USB devices those connected to a BOB can be powered by GP2X. (Only MK2)
4) High powered USB devices should be connected to a BOB powered by a PSU. (MK1 and MK2)

Ok, maybe the manual I have was mis-translated to english, but it's in there
"New GP2X
You may connect Adaptor to
GP2X only or Interface
Board only."

From an electrical point of view, can the firmware switch off the
power to the ext interface?

Does anyone else have a MKII and a BOB to replicate this?
Does the BOB power light come on?

So bottom line, in order to use my 1st Edition like I would use a regular gaming console (IE sitting near my TV with 1 or 2 controllers running from it) I need the GP2X, the BOB, 1 AC unit plugged into the BOB, and another AC unit (or batteries) for the GP2X... is that correct?

Yes, that's my interpretation of the BOB manual
you can get it here:
http://www.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,23,1626

And since, the dev BOB that I have appears to be the same
board that will be inside the new docking station, then I would
expect you'll need 2 adaptors in that case as well.

Update:

reflashed to firmware 2.0.0 and results:

gp2x WILL power the BOB (power adaptor plugged into the gp2x)

BOB WILL NOT power the gp2x (power adaptor plugged in to BOB)
