Is there any news on a release date for Payback? Seems there are a few commerical games being anounced but nothing more.

I have been waiting to play this game since the announcement on the GBA ages ago (2 years?!) but the GBA went out of fashion with me after a few months and I forgot about it until I saw the gp2x.

I have been given some money to buy it, very hard to keep when I'm in a pub :)

Ta!

Which do you think will give you the most entertainment? If you think the drink will last you longer, then buy that instead :)

I suspect you will spend longer drinking £20 of booze than playing this game; so drink it! ;)
Are you saying that payback is going to be so bad that it will only last an hour or so? ;)

im sure there will be a demo

Isnt that what is on the NAND memory already? It does look good which is why I would like to pay for it. There are more maps on Apex's website too.

The demo was a disapointment, I never heard of a game demo that wasn't playable. Consider what's on the NAND a movie and nothing more.

The old game demos was "view-only" too. (~1994, DOS)

Then you havent been around games very long. Noninteractive demos, or rolling demos, are rather common. There are at least two significant differences in a movie and a rolling demo:

A) small filesize. a video of the whole ~10 minute demo would be dozens of times as large as the demo itself is.

2) believability. post a video, how do we know it wasnt rendered on better hardware, or with mega overclock?

Indeed the rolling demo was certainly not a video; it was actually running on the engine. Problem is, the game was running a bit too slow. I'm assuming it will run better when the final version is released.

You are right, I forgot that it was called a "rolling" demo. I never said it was a movie, just that it has the same level of interactivity as a movie. The visuals are very nice though, a bit stuttery at times, but impressive nonetheless. I hope they'll release a playable demo by the time they go commercial, this is one of the GP2X commercial games (besides Vektar) that I really look forward to.

Cheers

I copied my demo from nand to SD and the demo went smooth. So I think the demo was made for the faster SD card.

Are you saying that buyers of the MK2 version of the GP2x get this pre-installed onto NAND? I presume there is an easy way to remove it therefore...

Often these old DOS games were either restricted to a first level or part level (eg LucasArts did this, as did Id for example), or a timeout (eg CodeMasters in some of theirs). This is far better than a scrolling, non-interactive (boring) movie.

What's the speed of your SD card out of interest?
