I was wondering what the predicted lifetime of the Pandora will be? Basically Is there any point in trying to get the wheels turning on a project that would take around 6 months -> 1 year to develop, if I got a reliable team together?

Cheers

at the rate it has been going, it had better be at least 2 or 3 years if OPT have any hope of making their money back.

I'm sure the Pandora will be around for years. Any projets that you want to start go ahead. Because the way I see it the Pandora will be around for at least 2 or 3 years at the least before we even consider replacing it.

As long as there is a human soul within the Pandora, it will outlast the rest of the universe, as an eternal testament to mankind's existence.

I mean, I've been following it for a year or two and haven't even ordered yet. I don't have a job technically, so I might fall back on the third batch... Second batch might be too soon. I'm supposed to be saving money.

So it's going to be a while before I even get mine, then I intend to keep it for several years. The Pandora isn't some kind of popsicle or fashion accessory, that melts or becomes ugly in a few years. I'm keeping it until it stops working.

We will be bound by TI and how long they produce the chipset for obviously, but as for the jump to 1.xGHZ they are planning with the OMAP3 even if we move to that chip when they discontinue the 600Mhz version the software should still work on both units, the differences are minor as far as I understand.

Will these 1ghz Pandoras cost more?

If they were made they would yes, that's an expensive chip (there is more to it than that too).

Well, while it is more expensive right now, the question is, how much it will cost when they discontinue the 600MHz variant.

It might have the same price as the 600MHz version has now.

But that's something only the economy could answer :)

slap a LITE next to it or SLIM or 2000 or whatever, the psp also upgraded hardware and it was still a psp

No no, what you want to do is re-do the original text logo in ALLCAPS with a [blink]blink[/blink] tag. Bonus points if you manage to display it properly on the plastic case. :D

Maybe styling the logo in rainbow letters would help if that wasn't already enough emphasis.

And then make the iconographic logo into a floating 3D hologram.

DM3730 by any chance? One thing I like about that chip is that it doubles L1 cache size. I'm very curious to see how that would improve scores on typical applications (with all other variables kept equal), including ones hurt by the memory hierarchy of the system. My guess is that it doesn't help nearly as much as doubling L2 would, since the L2 performance on Cortex-A8 is very high. The higher clock, especially for the SGX, is nice too; you can get those on OMAP3630 but I doubt that'll be as readily available in lower quantity.

Going that far, it's almost as if the logo would contain more powerful technology than the actual pandora ;P

Is that wrong? ;)

Clearly Craig and ED should get a dozen or so of the new and uber expensive chips and have them made into quasi-prototype 1.2Ghz Pandora XZRS models and sell them to the highest bidder on Ebay. Not enough of them to make a push/switch in code base. Uses a different board/chip population so it won't affect pre-orders. Should sell for stupid amounts of money.

Is it as simple as putting a different chip in the queue for the pick&place machine? If so - go for it.

After batch 1&2 are fulfilled, selling new units with faster CPUs - I don't see a problem with that if:
1. Replacement/upgrade boards are made available to us first batchers at a reasonable (with profit) price.
2. We get some core credit at the store for returning the old boards to you for use in warranty replacements.

There won't be many people with the hardware needed to replace this chip on their own.

First things first though, get those first batch orders filled please. We're rapidly approaching two years.
