PanDebian

Thanks, Gregor, for PanDebian!

Just installed it on my new Pandora...

As I recall, at end of install, it asked me to set passwords, but when I try to use password for 'su' in terminal, it doesn't recognize that password....

Is there other password I should use for this or ?

Thanks,

Mark

You can open a root terminal with the corresponding menuentry.

Thanks for your help....

I've tried both (LX and root) terminals and neither one accepts the password I enter, says 'incorrect password'.....

Very strange....

If you have a root terminal, you are already root. No need for su :)

If you have a root terminal, you are already root. No need for su :)

I know that...

The problem is that when I try to open the root terminal program, a window opens first that asks for 'the administrative password'.....when I enter what I thought would be my password, it gives me error message, "Incorrect password...."......

I referred to 'su' in regards to trying to use LXterminal.....

When I try to open Synaptic, nothing happens, it does not open....

Any suggestions?

This is sounds like something I am going to be spending a good amount of time learning about in the future. Which isn't bad, I like learning things, but since this is all entirely new to me this is going to make my next few months a hit and miss maelstrom of frustration and learning curve. But I'll get there.

This may seem odd but have you tried 'sudo su'?

Not odd at all, I should have thought of that.... ;)

Thanks for your help, neelix.......

Well just tried it and got the following:

$ sudo su

sudo: unable to resolve host mark-openpandora

[sudo] password for mark:

mark is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

:(

So if I understand correctly, you're running a debian chroot under Angstrom... so if you copy etc/sudoers, etc/sudoers.d and etc/hosts from the angstrom rootfs to the debian rootfs from outside the chroot might that solve your problem? (assuming you used the same username & host for both)

Yes, that's my understanding of how PanDebian works...

Thanks again for your help, Neelix....

Tried what you suggested, but now I get error message:

mark@mark-pandora $ sudo su

Sorry, user mark is not allowed to execute '/bin/su' as root on localhost.localdomain.

hrm... it probably requires further tweaking of the sudoers file but I don't know enough about it to know the answer.

OK, thanks a lot for trying....appreciate it!

Anyone else have some suggestions?

Can someone that is using PanDebian please tell me if

a. You are able to use root terminal. If so, do you use a password that you set up in PanDebian or ?

b. You are able to use sudo or su in LXterminal, do you use a password that you set up in PanDebian or ?

Thanks!

Have you tried manually chrooting into the debian rootfs as Angstrom su and running passwd to set the root password?

hmmmm.........not sure how to 'manually chroot into the debian rootfs as Angstrom su..'?

IIRC something along the lines of sudo chroot /path/to/debian/rootfs from terminal should work, and you should already be root in the new chroot jail.

Just tried to do what you suggested....but not sure that I pointed to the right place...I did:

$ sudo chroot /media/PanDebian/

and then did passwd....and entered new password....

But when I tried using sudo in PanDebian terminal again, I get the same error message...

????

Thanks.

Try su?

- Neelix

You're 'da Man, Neelix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That did it! Got root now....apt-get works!.....

Thanks so much for your persistence in helping me get through this!

Meanwhile, one other issue, not sure if it is or isn't related to using PanDebian, but just in case.....

After I finish using Pandora, I close the display lid to put Pandora into the low power mode, when I open it back up lately I find the Pandora is 'frozen up', it won't respond at all to any screen taps or pressing on keys, etc....only thing I can do is reboot.....

Do you think this is related to PanDebian not properly suspending itself or ?

Thanks for any input....

UPDATE:

Read through this thread and saw earlier posts about this issue....looks like I need to disable the screen blanking feature in settings....will give that a try....

Now I have a in deboowait that base system installed completely but, I dont see nothing in the menu.

I too have had the "base system installed successfully" in deboowait for about 45 minutes.

Is that normal? Is it doing something in the background or am I supposed to kill it and then reboot?
