Official Gp32 Vs Other Handheld (zodiac, Etc.)

a microsoft portable would be interesting, but only in the same what that the xbox has been ripped apart by modders.

it would be good to see what people could do with a microsoft portable, their philosophy is after all more power = better, the homebrew possibilities would be great.

Well i guess with the DS being released in November, its almost time that we all cannot say that the GP32 is the worlds most powerful handheld gaming system. Unless it already isn't, don't know if the N-Gage is, but the Zodiac i don't consider a gaming system since it seems to be more of a palm pilot sorta thing.

well in pure prozessor power gp is faster than ds, but the custom chips should make the ds faster, but for emulation i think they are kinda equal, but the ds have less ram, and a way to small res.

Yea but with the Gizmodo being released next month and other handheld consoles like the mini playstation it isn't long before there are more powerful machines than the GP32 around.

Yeah but will they be as easy to develop emulators for? (I'm not in any way implying that writing *any* emulator is easy btw)

Its rather debatable.. I think GP32 was self-claimed "most powerful handheld" ("handheld" not gaming machine, since obviously consoles would have it beat; so it would have had to be "gaming handheld" which woudl be too long, so they jujst used "handheld")

GP32 has *never* been the most powerful handheld :)

Heck, the Newton 2000 came out in like 1998 or somesuch, with a 200MHz ARM processor and 8MB of flash RAM, though a grayscale screen (higher res, too). Not to mention all the PDAs and such out there.

But GP32 was certainly the most powerful gaming handheld when it was launched.

Do you think the DS and PSP will deplete the GP32 scene?

I'm not sure if accurate, but I've seen the GP32 scene slow down a lot the last few months and its sort of depressing me seeing so much less news being posted to the sites. But I chose to blame that on lazy summer hot days.. I hope things pick up again as things cool off in this hemisphere :)

I sold off my spare opriginal-GP (nonFLU) and just have my FLU; I am thinking of ordering a BLU and thus I coudl abuse my FLU .. perhaps try and paint it black; an all black FLU case would be pretty sweet, but then I'd have to figure out how to move the BLU contents over to it...

But anyway, right now I'm overworked to the max and slumped out on all devices; they're all boring me right now :) Well, not boring me, but I just need to sleep so badly that I can't play anything ;) (I never play, I just code. Sucks.)

gizmondo will be the next gp32
its arm9 and SHOULD be open source, 64 megs ram, 64 bit Nvidia card, 400mhz proc
320x240 backlit screen, gps,gprs,camera,and more, o ya-bigger than 128 meg expansion slots

hopefully well see stuff go there and then fly

Nah, the screen is too small (2.8"). I would wait until a PPC comes out with decent gaming controls.

the bigest problem @ gizmondo is the small screen and the adversting sutff, also i dont like gsm to much in a handheld. and gozmondo will not be open source in anyway, they sayd that in some interviews. so they will not release a free sdkor something, the wince of it will be cuttet down. so it may not be very good for homebrew.

It may not be "the most powerful" but it is still and probably will be one of the best if not THE best, most customisable, truly opensourced handheld for awhile to come.

I just like the fact that once you brought the GP32, a SMC and possibly a card reader... that was it... you really didnt have to spend any more money to get a lot of fun out of it. if only it supported larger memory cards :)

I completely agree with you. There isnt really a need to spend any money after you have bought the GP32 system and it would be handy if it could support larger memory cards! I personally don't really know but is there absolutely any way that it could though?

Not through the SMC (Smart Media Card) slot, Not without hardware modification and a bios update/upgrade. The dever`s that are working on GPlinux have made it possible to access usb harddrives and memory keys through the usb port via a powered usb hub. It`s very early stages at the moment, But does open up a lot of possibilities.

See here.

Im really with pixelator on the 100$ price drop- hell, if I could get a 128 Z for 300$ I'd be enjoying the best of both worlds right now. But as it is- I say what Vimacs says; I dont feel, at this point, its worth so much more cash. Damn those blus look crispy... puts my flu to shame <_< (sorry for straying a bit but it does lol)

umm...someone said already....but..
Z2 for 149 pound @pc-world
Link

my thoughts of getting one are growing...possibly because i'm not a "child of the NES or snes days"... i'm a child of the PSX and DC days, but still enjoying snes games if they're good. and i think snes emulation has to r0xx0r on Z2 ... and i KNOW there wont be any psx or dc emulation on a handheld in a time shorter than 2 or 3 years (7 for dc).

still one question: how long does the battery last (w/o overclock)

btw i still like the gp32 very much. ninja gaiden 3 + nesterGP = 0wn4g3
but zodiac would come in handy as i possess a 512 MB SD card currently used in my mobile for MP3s (still dont have the friggin headphones yet - FUC AMAZON)

hope a question in a discussion thread is not off topic enough to flame me :p

0.0 ?? but you dont have to overclock the cpu, do you? and it doesnt take any advantages from zodiac hardware?

Zodiac is running i believe at 200mhz, i'm not sure if its overclockable, but the Zod runs Palm OS behind the scenes which, like any OS, the emulator has to share resources with the OS which slows it down. So the Zod at 200mhz may not be any faster than a 166mhz GP32 when you take into account that it runs an OS behind the scene of any emulator.

Much as some have posted, I think the Zodiac has its merits and is in a class of its own. It is difficult to compare the two. Most comparisons I have seen are from a gaming perspective only. The Zodiac is a gaming device, but also a PDA. The arguments about cost are valid, but only if you intend to use it as a gaming device only. If you look at the price of comparable PDA's, you will find they are around the same price (more or less).

Much like the N-GAGE and N-GAGE QD, it is difficult to compare them directly against the GP32, as the GP32 was meant to primarily be a gaming device (though it has multimedia capabilities). The Zodiac was meant to be a gaming PDA, and the N-GAGE series was meant to be a gaming phone. Without taking this into account and looking at things from a gaming perspective only, one's view is completely slanted. It all depends what you are looking for. I own all three and enjoy each of them for there own merits, supplementing one weakness for another's strength.

Good Point.

And BTW, the Zodiac has only 192 MHz (but can be overclocked, i use mine @234 MHz for running SNES and Quake)

About PalmOS: Many people are complaining about it being restricted and weak. IMO this is, for the biggest part, true (no multitasking, cumbersome file management) but it is also a merit, because the missing features (esp. multitasking) make the OS consume considerably less CPU-time than WinCE or the likes, so it doesn´t slow the zodiac down much.
