O M G - Will This Thing Play - Oregon Trail?!?!?

Kyosys said:
well you don't have to play it at the original size
I realise that when a game is ported that you can change things, I was just passing comment as there is a lot of detail that you have to pack into a tiny area, or lose some of the detail, or split across two screens/pages etc etc. At the start of this post Chad has said what could be possible, and due to the keyboard etc many possibilities could be opened up that weren't possible/sensible on GP2X/PSP etc. So there may be a lot of games that are technically possible but might either need lots of work to look right or just not be playable due to the size of the screen.

I never played the game - being 'too European'. When I first saw the post I couldn't imagine there would be so much interest in a game that people played at school - we never played anything at school that I would ever want to play again, but that's our education system for you.

If it were ported I'd want to try it if only out of curiosity, but the details would be tiny. This could well be a problem with a number of potential ports.
It's not so much that the game was incredibly good, it's just that everybody played it. If you went to public school in the US between 1985 and 1995, you played Oregon Trail. There must have been some sort of government mandate.

Hell, they even put it on tee shirts now:

The screenshot posted is of a much later version of the game. The original game (what Chad was referring to) was for the Apple II and DOS and looked like this:

I don't think the Pandora will have any trouble with it.

How about HHGTTG?

Oh crap... I just had an epiphany of why the keyboard will make gaming so cool!

Please, please, PLEASE tell me someone will port Oregon Trail - or make an emu for one of the systems it was on.
Hmmm, dunno what HHGTTG is, but I sure played a lot of Oregon Trail in my school, Apple IIe FTW! I'm a 29 yr old Canadian, we had it in our school system too.

Don't forget to check out this remake, where you take the family roadtrip to the Atlantis Music Festival.

I'm also looking forward to using the keyboard for Wasteland. That one we did not play in school. :)

HHGTTG = H2G2 = Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

They made a game of that?
Yeah, Infocom, I couldn't get past the part with the Babblefish though.

It's brilliant, as are most of Infocom's games.

Chad: hallelujah :) HHGTTG was the kind of thing I was meaning when I mentioned "interactive fiction" games. Frotz will almost certainly be ported, and if not, the C64 and other emus will run them.

Do you like Infocom style text adventures?
If so, then you will like it.

I'm not sure, even if emulated, how they will get around the lack of 'feelies' though. It was sort of their copy protection, and usually was required to proceed with the story. I guess you just go online to a Faq or something?

Chaah! Only COMPLETELY AWESOMELY SPECTURALOUSILY GREAT!!!

You have to eat peanuts, listen to poetry, (or do what you can to avoid doing that, actually), brush your teeth, move a random series of object into the proper place in the correct order in a set number of moves in order to get a fish to bounce into your ear (all without knowing that's going to happen), drink beer, lie in the mud, don't forget your towel, make friends with a depressed robot, never get to drink any tea.....

It's awesome!

Would that later version that the screenshot was posted of be playable (from a technological standpoint) on the pandora? I would die if it were, that game accompanied me through my childhood. I think it was Oregon Trail Deluxe...

Well you could apply that logic to anything

Like take the internet for example:

A connection of everyone who wants in one gigantic network offering unlimited options, and people are using it to download manga porn.
There was no logic in what I said. It was a joke. :D
My Quad Core with 4 gigs of ram is currently playing World of Xeen, so I know all about proverbial sledgehammers to solve every problem.
