nVIDIA SHIELD™ Portable 2 - Coming soon?

Don't worry the Shield 2 in the form you know and love is still coming.  Don't forget the FCC leak that showed the new design of it which SONY posted in the first post. Unless that was a major ruse by Nvidia the Shield handheld will still come.

The shield tablet just looks to be a Tegra Note 7 that Nvidia will be releasing themselves this time. In the past it was made and sold by others under license.   So my guess is that they have renamed it since they will be selling it directly now.  IF you look at the picture of the shield tablet , its the same tablet as the early Note 7 K1 tabs Nvidias were showing off ages ago.

Autocorrect -> Off    * Problem solved   :p

Don't know why they didn't go with one of these type controllers:

I would prefer the game grip, but then again I am not going to just buy a "gaming" device just because it says "nvidia" and/or "shield".

I suppose you can buy the Shield tablet and get the Game grip.  Nothing forcing you to buy their Nvidia controller.  Then you would have a 8" Full HD IPS K1 tablet with gamegrip controller for about $370 all up.

I understand Nvidia have also released Linux for the K1 if your so inclined -> https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra-rel-19 . Someone will get that onto the tablet Im sure

Nvidia are making an announcement on the 22nd.   Hopefully they also announce a shield 2 handheld

http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2014/07/18/uq/

Hmmm,  that controller sure looks like it has the same profile as the FCC leak that I thought was the handheld shield 2 (see first post). Tell me it isn't so,  Tell me they haven't axed the handheld shield 2 for this tablet and controller.  IF they were going to do this, why design a standard controller and not one that can attach to it (like the one I showed previously).  Who the fuck wants to lie on the couch and have to balance the tablet some where away from them . How the heck would you play it on the go. WTF is going on,  I'm getting angry.  I've gone nuclear. Boom!

Well, tablets do seem to be where the dollars are at. Hell, I just saw Nick Cannon on QVC last week selling his own branded tablet, I was like WTF!?

Anyways, I'll wait and see what they announce on the 22nd, but I'm not to hopeful. I think it would be killer for them to offer a tablet and a all-in-one unit like the first Shield. This way, the tablet market is happy, and "physical control" crowd is happy as well, and the casual market can just sinc a controller when it fits a need. This way all markets can be met, and everyone is happy.

I'm just not sure if Nvidia sees the all-in-one device as lucrative enough to keep it going. I personally see having more options as the way to go, but what do I know? I think the majority of Shield1 owners where more than happy, but I think we all had ideas and improvements for a S2.

I would hate to see Nvidia not give it another go, especially with all the community suggestions and wants. I'll keep my fingers crossed, and hope that an actually S2 makes it before years end. I have no interest in a tablet, so without a proper unit, they have just lost one sale.

Assuming this is the replacement for the shield handheld, which isn't certain yet (there is a chance that they will launch the handheld with the 64 bit K1 later I suppose or even now still with 32bit K1). Assuming though that it is a replacement, this would be my feelings on the situation:

The current Shield handheld is a portable gaming device that allows you to play games using a controller on the go.

This is a tablet that combined with that controller does not allow you to play controller games on the go.

Result: Everyone that bought the original shield for mobile controller based  gaming is now removed from the pool who would buy this. In fact does it even make sense to game on this at home, not exactly ideal to have to prop the tablet and have to play with a controller, limits the positions you can do this. Certainly not lying flat on the coach.

Price, as a gaming device only. The price is prohibitive to many.  $359 if you don't already have a controller is a tough swallow. Many had panned the Shields high price until it dropped down to its current range of pricing. This would be even worse. OF course if you need a tablet also, its not a bad price proposition. But for gamers only , its a tough one - it's very near a PS4 price, and really doesn't offer much  portability to distinguish it.

On a side note, this isn't going to attract many devs to build controller based games for it. As a dev, you would not design a controller based game for a standard tablet that does not come standard with a controller like the original shield did. This is also a sticking point for it to be seen seriously as a controller based gaming device in devs eyes.

Would have been much better if they actually thought about use cases and released it with an attachable controller like Wikipads one, or the expandable bigben game grip.

As a tablet though, it looks good, maybe $50 to much, but I see they have gone for a more premium build this time over the Note 7 , so that explains the price some what. Disappointing that there is no ac wifi though.

But to be frank, this is really just a launch of a decent tablet. Putting Shield on it , does not change that into something else.

I just noticed one of the leaked slides says "The newest member of the shield family" .

There is still hope for a Shield handheld I suppose

Yeah, this seems like more of an "addition", than a "replacement" for sure. I'm hopeful we'll see an upgraded Shield handheld by years end(announcement at least), with a release sometime early next year. The tablet will for sure get the "Shield" brand out in to the wild more than the handheld ever did. Then hopefully if and when a S2 does make it to market, it will be in a better position than the original one was, and worldwide sales can't hurt either.

We will know tomorow what the story is I guess, when Nvidia makes the formal announcement of the product.

On a side note.  in the lead up to Nvidia's announcement of it, they launched a game that allows you to win one.  In order to enter the competition you have to agree to the following:.   Seriously , what!

Authorize NVIDIA Ultimate Quest to use your account?

ultimate_quest_twitter.jpg
NVIDIA Ultimate Quest

By NVIDIA Corporation

ultimatequest.nvidia.com

NVIDIA Ultimate Quest

This application will be able to:

  • Read Tweets from your timeline.
  • See who you follow, and follow new people.
  • Update your profile.
  • Post Tweets for you.

They should have an honest title to the competition. something like

"Allow us to Privacy rape you, for a 1:billion chance to win a tablet"

Sadly, as a security expert once said.

"Given a choice between dancing pigs and security, users will pick dancing pigs every time"

I don't really use twitter.  Regardless, I would just create a new account.

Now they just need to send me a free shield so I can play that game to enter the contest to win a free shield whatever thing.  I would prolly just follow a bunch of porn accounts with the account I set up for this, to make things interesting.

Edit:  It looks like you may just need a twitter account for the game based on my really weak 2 minutes of research.

They should still send me a free shield.  So I can tweet, or something.

The Shield Tablet has been announced by Nvidia. The leaks above were accurate $299 it is.

Nvidia have said that it doesn't replace the Shield handheld.

They have to launch some kind of product when the 64bit K1 comes out. 64bit Shield 2 confirmed :p

Here are the articles/official pages on the announcement

I wonder Dolphin would run seamlessly on Tegra K1?
I don't know that Dolphin runs seamlessly on anything but the highest end PC's, but it should do well with most things below that.

Chris

Edit:Damn, that controller is as butt ugly as the Shield :p Damn, this was Nvidia's chance to make a sleeker and more form fitting controller(since it no longer needs everything inside it), and they made a controller that pretty much keeps the same fugly ergonomics. I'm not to hopeful of the Shield 2 looking much better than the first.

On the other hand, the tablet looks killer. I hope this brings tons on new consumers in to the mix, so that the S2 can happen sooner rather than later(or not at all). Now Nvidia needs to work on more publishers adding in physical control support. I love Android, but the lack of physical control options is a travesty.

Don't even know why they made that controller. There is already lots to choose from. I wonder if there is more to the story. I know Nvidia have said they have a reference Android TV game console for OEMS to produce (when ATV is released by Google). Could have been primarily developed for that.
