I just found a 4.8" WVGA (auto-stereoscopic?) 3D display...

Screen dimensions and resulution are the same as the standard Pandora display, but I think it has no touchscreen...

Perhaps it can somehow replace the original one...?
 
- hum, 4,8" is NOT 4,3"...
- touchscreen is not related to the screen it's just an added layer (sometime enclosed in the lcd assembly) but touchscreen is not really compatible with a 3d use...
- what make you think we could easily connect that screen to pandora hardware? it's quite different than pluging a different VGA screen on your desktop...

No flaimbait, but surely not possible to stuff this screen into a Pandora without taking MWeston's precious time ;)
 
I've seen some large monitors that use lenticular lens tech at Siggraph some while ago, and the effect is amazing (glasses-free, at that). Personally, I'd love to see this tech integrated into a device (hence why I'll be buying a Nintendo 3DS), but a couple things to keep in mind:

- The way this tech works effectively halves horizontal resolution (for a WVGA screen, 400 pixels for each eye) while enabled.

- Like Elwing said, it's likely not plug-and-play like desktop monitors. Pandora would likely need a hardware revision to work with this display, and then would need some software that would take advantage of it by drawing every other pixel for each eye.

I like the idea though. If there is, in fact, some way to use this in Pandora with a relatively simple mod, I'd buy another and take on the task (and get a bigger display at the same time! yay!).
 
When I was your age, I used one eye, used parallax for depth cuing, and liked it. This "3D" thing will never take off.
 
Well as stated its not touchscreen, so a bit pointless as software wont be compatible from one Pandora to the next...plus these screens will be mightily expensive unless your Nintendo buying millions...

Maybe for Pandora 2 in 5 years when it has touchscreen/3D in one screen and OMAP5 is ready to roll!

Wat, you didn't like the Sega Master System's shutter glasses? ;) I still have mine. Wish they still worked... they were fricking awesome.

Personally, I'm not into this 3D stuff for games or movies. I watched Avatar in IMAX 3D, then watched it on DVD at home... and liked the 2D DVD version more. There are two things that I think would enhance 3D. 1: the ability to shift your position around to move the view of the camera (like that Wii remote hack that tracks your position in space and adjusts the screen image accordingly), and 2: crap. I forgot... but there WAS a 2.

Anyway, my interest in the 3D thing isn't about movies or games, it's more about visualization. I'd love to be able to show off my demo reel in full 3D, or see my characters acting in a realtime cutscene in a game. ... and for 3D porn! What? I mean screensavers! yeah...

I'd expect that "WVGA" is the resolution for one eye, not the physical resolution. Otherwise, the horizontal dpi you see would be half the vertical dpi which would probably be rather ugly.

This might be something to consider for the next Pandora. It won't work with the present version, though.

I went up to my local computer shop the other day and they had a 3D test system on that you could mess about with. I wasn't very impressed.
Street Fighter 4 looked quite nice but the driving game I tried wasn't up to much cop. The 3D didn't really work fast enough for something like driving games I'm afraid.
This was a system that used the glasses though. Maybe the screens that have the filter built into them will work better?
 
it could be very easy to transform actual pandora in 3D with polarized glasses

just add to the screen a thin layer which polarize the output light. odd pixels could be polarized in one way, and the rest the other way (in a chess layer)

A parallax barrier (which is what these screens use for glassesless 3D) splits alternating pixels to each eye. Column 1 would be left, column 2 right, column 3 left, column 4 right, and so on. The WVGA resolution probably refers to the display's resolution with the barrier off. It's not like shutter glasses which shuts off alternating eyes to match what's on the screen, which is what Tripmonkey_uk likely saw. That tech doesn't halve vertical resolution.

However, there are displays with technology that can display the full resolution for each eye, but this is proprietary (and probably exclusive) to NEC displays.

I thought we weren't supposed to talk about Pandora 2, until the original stopped shipping. Or was that until it started shipping?

Also, 3D would be freakin' sweet.

If we're allowed to talk about Pandora 2, how about this:

I think in say, four years time there should be a special edition Pandora. It would use a next generation ARM chipset, probably OMAP4, but clocked down to the same level of peformance as the original Pandora. By doing this, the battery can be smaller (and probably using more efficient battery technology available at the time) and thus the entire machine as thin as a DS Lite or 3DS but have the same long battery life. All sorts of stuff would be tweaked, for example the shoulder buttons - but the machine would pretty much be the same. Also, throw a then-current display in with it, like OLED or whatever is about then.

LCD screens typically have a polarising layer already, there would be a conflict. Something like Virtual Boy games, arranged in interleaved vertical stripes onscreen could be separated by a lenticular overlay though....
Or (going super low-tech and low res) you could have the L/R frames side by side, and view them with a divider, Victorian era style!

I think there is no point in talking about this kind of mods because they are completely useless unless developers take them in account when they make their games. However, there is a group of people who has been trying to turn a normal LCD into an autostereoscopic 3D screen using a cheap transparent sheet as a parallax barrier:

Question is, are we able to get lenticular overlays with enough column density for Pandora's screen size? I wouldn't mind putting one on the screen for temporary 3D, but my searches don't turn up anything useful.
