The US government does this too (eg: Tesla Motors). Usually it's in the form of a loan or tax break, but either way the government takes the loss if the company goes bankrupt.

A loan or a tax break is not the same thing as a grant.

Oh, the US govt gives grants too. http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/05/vice-president-biden-announces-2-4-billion-in-battery-related-g/

Whether this is a good thing is debatable, I'm just pointing out that it happens in a lot of places besides South Korea.

Okay, I'll give that you that one. Somehow this still seems a little deeper than funding the gaming industry, though. Maybe it's hard to understand since this country already has a strong gaming industry.

For an example, I used to pirate all my music, but once iTunes got rid of DRM, I started buying it. (You might then tell me I could have bought it on another store, but you'd be wrong. They sell iTunes cards in real stores, they don't do that with any other music store, at least not where I live (and I did look very hard for amazon cards but couldn't find any). My parents won't let me use their credit cards, so iTunes or pirating were my only options.)

I kind of did a similar thing. I needed a professional piece of software (non-game) so I bought it. It had one of those dongles that you had to plug in to use. That became quite annoying to have to grope around for that damn key and plug in every time. In this case I just went to the trusty Warez-mule and found a crack for it (after countless fake trojans). Sometimes the legitimate user gets penalized when they buy but the pirate gets the easy route.

I suppose that is an option for GPH games that you may want. Buy the DRMed version, then get a cracked one later on so that you can always use it. This way you still support software development but can use your game on any unit at any time. I don't really consider this piracy either as you bought the game (as long as you don't spread it).
