We're charging the front lines!

Actually, I'm not too 'newbish' as I've been into handhelds for a long time (I'm 35) and have been running emulators and following community development on Pocket PC and PalmOS devices for years.

I'm also a 15 year veteran of the video game industry (I was lead artist on 3DO's High Heat Baseball 2002 PC and have done art for a bunch of SNES and even an old Gameboy mono game).

So enough of that - I have a couple of newb questions, which you can answer or ignore as you choose. I've been lurking these forums for a couple of weeks now, as I geared up for getting the BLU (which has officially left Futura-Online in Spain, according to the DHL website). Even so, forgive my lazy ass as I didn't glean this much from the forums in my cursory perusals:

1). Where's a good place to get native GP32 games in the USA? What are some of the 'must haves' of this library?
2). Is there any common sense on which OS/system is best to set up initially? Windows? Linux?

...I'm also working a trade on a Zodiac1, so I'll be able to post comparisons and reviews. As for my other handhelds and devices, they include: Toshiba e805 PocketPC, Palm Tungsten T|2, NEC Turbo Express, Sega GameGear, Atari Lynx, GBA SP (blue with USB Flash Linker). I used to have a yellow crystal NeoGeo and Nomad with gobs of games, but they were ripped off (sob).

I finally broke down and grabbed the GP32 because despite what seems to be a still-fading corporate publisher scene, the community for this is totally hopping and all the emulators alone look to make the thing well worth it. Plus, the screen looks better than any other handheld available on the BLU (even the Zodiac isn't all that vibrant).

So here I am! :D

Nice to have you here. My life ambition is to become the character in my avatar.
Seriously windows xp is pretty good as pho drive and gp drive work on thwm and are about 500x faster than pc link or gp manager.

it off line at the mo but I'll put it back on especially for you in 45mins asI took it down as my pet died and my pc went wrong. Hey everyone seed the torrent site a 9:00pm GMT time.

1)Ebay. Other than that, you won't find any in North America

2)The GP32 doesn't run Windows, are you thinking of Wind-ups? I don't know anything about GP32 Linux.

Welcome to the scene.

Live long and prosper.....

and code, too!

I think he means what OS to use to transfer files to the GP32 with.
But a good place to get commercial games anywhere in the world is JoyGP where you download encrypted games that can only run on your GP32. Another place to get a commercial game is like aeon softwear or something who sell the game GloopDX.

One of my hamsters.
BTW, did you talk to Spray about that, coz I reckon he had somthing to do with it
muhahahaha

muhahahahahaha

I think he ment as host to the GP32. Could be wrong though. Pixelator, if you mean on the GP32, there is no such thing as ARM-Windows, but you probably know that. Wind-ups is just a file launcher, and gpLinux is being worked on (Which reminds me, cyberic: cable's heading your way :)).

Gp32 have 'firmware' that runs program. That is real OS.
There is several unofficial firmware.

Wind-ups is a Desktop program for GP32 with file browser, gxb/fxe files launcher,
text editor, address book..etc. It looks like Windows :)
http://www.wind-ups.net

There's a port of linux for gp32.
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/gp32linux
(it suppots keyboard!)

You can also use gp32 keyboard. (Actually that is modified Ecrison Chatboard.)

If you dont mind me asking could you list the snes and GB games you have worked on? Im just interested, never met a pro before.

Also are you going to code for the gp32 or Zodiac?

Hey all, thanks VERY MUCH for the input so far (especially the list, prodo)..!

To address some stuff: I was meaning the launcher - I read some review that talked about various windows-like and linux interface(s). I guess they meant Wind Ups and the upcoming Linux project/release.

So, what's the best GP32 firmware to run..?

Some of the games I've done or worked on: Lester the Unlikely (SNES), Taz-Mania (SNES), Mario is Missing (SNES), Desert Strike (Genesis), Dominus (PC MCGA), Designasaurus II (PC EGA), Super Spellicopter (PC EGA), Star Trek 25th Anniversay (Gameboy), Steel harbinger (PS1), Portal Runner (PS2), Paintbrawl 2 (PC), High Heat Baseball 2002 (PC) and a few others.

No coding here - I'm just a lowly artist. ;)

Well you are getting a BLU so it has the new Euro FW already on it. It looks nice and works pretty straightforward and quick. I really don't like windups, it looks kind of cool but it is rather clunky to use. I would try to use the FW that comes with it first, if you hate it then go for something like Aquafish's FW which includes EuroFW, Pacrom, YAFL (launchers).

Remember, you can bork your GP32 if there is an error during flash, so be careful.
