Hello

Firstly, apologies .. I know how annoying newbee question posts are but since this section seems specifically put aside for such stuff then here goes.... :)

I have just got a GP2X .. and I can say that so far I'm impressed.

Some problems though:

1. I don't seem to be able to get USB working. I've tried two machines and both report that there is an error with the hardware. Is this common or am I likely to have a bad unit? (both machines were Windows XP)

2. I have the PSX emulator up and running and I even managed to transfer a Playstation disc onto the SD card (after a late night of downloading various utilities etc..) Whilst this was very educational it has so far been dissapointing in that the game puts up a splash screen and then just presents a black screen :( I guess some games are more compatible than others. So, is there a comprehensive list (I have seen one on here) or more specifically, is there a particular genre or game manufacturer that causes specific problems? I'm loathed to go through our entire collection of games only to find none of them work :(

I'm sure there will be more questions .. this thing has SO much potential that I think I'll be using it more than the kids :)

Thanks in advance
Jon

Assuming that its your SD card you're trying to mount, is it already formatted?
Have you been able to read the card in a card reader? (Or other device - camera, mp3 player etc)
When you choose 'USB -> SD Card' from the setttings menu, does the 'Usb Connected' screen appear?

The card is formatted and I have managed to run other software from it (e.g. the PSX emulator) by using a card reader. I do get the USB connected screen as well.

The XP machine recognises that something is plugged in but doesn't seem to understand what it is and reports that it is 'not working' .. this happens on two different PCs.

Thanks
Jon

Try a different cable, the one shipped with the GP2X caused simillar problems for other members here too.

Regarding the PSX emulator, this is still a work in progress only, games are not playable yet, I was following the topics regarding this emulator closely, and only few games I heard of that were playable without sound (less than 10 games), although it is on 3-5 FPS, but it is really impressive having Sould Blade on GP2X :) , the main developers Zodttd and Unai are the ones to follow to know what is exactly the status for this emulator, look for posts from them.

You can also check the GP2X wiki, it has many info (I advice you use google search to find information you are looking for in it, I dont like how it is categorized and google is your best guide), another advice is to check some of the pinned topics here and in the General GP2X forum, and the manual listed in the archive.

I advice you to play Vektar and Tile Match, those are great games that will make you like your GP2X even more :)

Finally, welcome to the community ;)

Wow! .. different cable trick worked a treat :) .. straight in ! (Curious why the supplied one is bad though! :( )

As for the PSX emulator, I'll take a look around, thank you for the advice. I was hoping it would just sort of work though as this was one of my main reasons for geting the GP2X (well, my son's actually)

Thanks again

I believe the supplied USB cable has about a 50/50 shot of actually working. The user manual should read:

1. Unpack GP2X.
2. Pitch supplied batteries and USB cable
3. Buy SD card reader and new NIMH batteries
4. Enjoy

great knowing that your problem was solved, although you were disappinted by the PSX emu thing, but I promise you that the GP2X will give you and your son the greatest time while you two figure out how set up and use everything it can offer, if you have a technical back ground you can even start getting him involved slowly in computer stuff (I can imagine the look on your son's face when you show him the games you used to play yourself in the arcade:  :D )
