Hey all.

Wondering if it is typical for most .nes roms NOT to work on the GP32. (I am using little john v0.4 currently). I test the roms on a pc emulator and they work fine but usually only about 20% work on the GP32.

I am wondering if this is common or if I am overlooking something like a setting in the littlejohn menus or maybe naming the files a certain way. Most of them when I select the game to load, says it is "Saving Browser Info" then "Loading and Analyzing" then kicks right back to the directory in about half a second.

So is it just me? Maybe I am not using the right roms?

Any insight is appreciated.

Cheers,

no. almost every nes game works fine with little john.
maybe its a problem with your cardreader are something similar.

ps: you also can zip the roms that will save much space ;)

i'd suggest keeping versions 0.2 and 0.3 on your SMC for this reason. there are compatibility differences between the two. I've never moved to 0.4 because the framerate seemed to drop between 0.3 and 04...

spyhunter, for example, works in one version, but not the other...

and some sort of galaxian variant works in the other, but not the first one, if you get my meaning...

but it's probably over 90% as far as i can tell.

if you're using zips, try looking into them... some download sites include a text file in the archive saying where it came from, etc... this might fuck things up a bit...

edit: reading your post again, i'd suggest reinstalling littlejohn? sometimes things are as simple as that...

Dont you have to recache the browser of roms in littlejohn .. I faintly remember needing to do that with AN emulator but I cant remember which one...

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. I WAS using LittleJohn V.3 and didn't have much more success there. It COULD be the card I am using (a no name 16mb I had lying around, I am still waiting for my 128 to arrrive) but when running Frodo I have no problems whatsoever. FYI : I am using the multicard reader built into my laptop to transfer the files. Haven't tried the PC link cable... not using zipped roms either.

I am certainly not suggesting it is the fault of the LJ emulator in any way. No doubt I will figure this out shortly. Will see once the new card arrives.

Thanks,

Get a NES emulator for your PC and try the ROMs in that, then you'll know whether it is the ROM or the GP32 side which is at fault. NES ROMs work fine, and I have found a higher compatilibity if you use NESterGP too. Otherwise perhaps the source of your ROMS (!) is to blame...?

Maybe check the names of the file are in 8.3 format ?

By that do you mean that the prefix is no longer than 8 chars and the suffix is .nes?

Do I need to use upper or lowercase when naming them? Or does it not matter?

Also, would changing the file names in Windows explorer (xp) then moving them to the SMC make a difference? I was wondering is Windows introduced some garbage characters. The roms do show up on the LittleJohn filebrowser, it just will not load them.

Thanks for responding, I will play with the filenames some more.

I had tested a couple, but will go back and be more thorough this time.

Thanks,

I think I always used lower case but I can't tell you if it changes anything, I don't think so and I changed the names into Windows Explorer then moved it to the SMC as you say.

Don't know if it will work but I had this idea because Pc link only allowed to have 8.3 characters name for the files. Hope it will help.

Yeah it's Little John. Also fgen and other ones by rlyeh. By what you're saying do you mean it browses the rom folder and then saves the file names?

never really figured why I had to do it or how it works ... I just posted that just in case "didn't wokr" equated to "can't be selected" ;)
