Seems not useful for me, I can search packages faster with apt or aptitude... anyway I don't have space issues so I'll keep it just in case, I only disabled the script called by cron.
I wonder how much complicated it's indexing is... if I do an updatedb it takes 5 mins with 5 hard disks for a total 6,5 TB ... while that script slowed down my PC for more than 12 hours (and for at least 3 it was running alone)...

My next trial is fix the 640x480 resolution and add the 1280x1024.
I always had a problem with the 640x480 resolution, it stretches over itself showing duplicate images on both sides... the problem is that many games launched with WINE/dosbox starts with that resolution...
Now I took the time to find a solution, and I started this creating the "xorg.conf" file that was missing:
Xorg :1 -configure
cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then I started adding to it all the resolutions I need, using "gtf" to generate the needed strings:
Now, all seems working right, the PC starts by default at 1280x1024, and I finally can use the 640x480 resolution...
BUT, only ONE of the TWO available !! O_O
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 4096 x 4096
DVI-I-1 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
1280x1024_60.00 60.00*+
1024x768 60.00
1024x768_60.00 60.00
800x600 60.32 56.25
800x600_60.00 60.01
848x480 60.00
640x480 59.94
640x480_60.00 60.01
The one that's working is the last one (640x480_60.00 60.01), but all the applications uses the previous by default (640x480 59.94) that STILL has the problem...
How can I remove all those duplicated resolution from xrandr ? ...or better, how can I prevent those to be added in the first place ?
Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"
Option "UseEDID" "false"
# despite above we get:
# Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID
# (Using EDID frequencies has been enabled on all display devices.)
Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
I found a workaround to play games, but it's still a pain in the ass:
if I set the display to the working 640x480_60.00 resolution before starting the game, for example "Baldur's Gate" with wine, the resolution will not change and I'm able to play without issues...
the strange thing is that when I exit the game, the resolution changes to the not working 640x480 ...
EDIT:
I made a script to simplify the resolution changes before and after the game:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Set the right resolution for the game
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 640x480_60.00
# Starts Baldur's Gate
./start.sh
# Reset the resolution to the default one
xrandr -s 0
But still I have an issue... maybe related to the desktop environment... when I set the 640x480_60.00 resolution, many fonts becomes HUGE, the bad thing is them remains HUGE even when I return to the 1280x1024 res... and I still don't know how to restore their right size without restart X...
Tried, but this prevents me to use that resolution:
Code:
[ 12602.928] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Not using mode "1280x1024_60.00" (hsync out of range)
[ 12602.928] (II) NOUVEAU(0): Not using mode "640x480_60.00" (hsync out of range)
I made a script to simplify the resolution changes before and after the game:

xrandr -s 0
xrandr --dpi 96

my PC problems are mainly related to the fact that I have a very old machine, so there's a lack of support and I have to find out workarounds for everything... but that's the fun part !!

If you look online at eBay or Amazon possibly could find a great deal for a newer model computer or just one that is newer than your most recent one

Too many people are in a hurry these days everyone should just take a breath and slow down so it sounds like you're doing good
