My unhappy adventures with Linux installation

as root :

echo 'deb http://deb.opera.com/opera stable non-free'>>/etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
I think you know the rest :p

Have a look at the main page: http://deb.opera.com/

After you install an Opera Debian package manually for the first time, it will add /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera.list containing configuration for this repository. Uncomment the second source line in it if you also want your Opera packages upgraded to beta versions in addition to final releases. The signing key will be added automatically, too.

If you nevertheless wish to configure your Opera repository manuallly, please use the configuration below:

# This file makes sure that Opera Browser is kept up-to-date
# as part of regular system upgrades

deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (final releases)

# The line above will make sure you get all final public releases.
# Uncomment the following line if you want to get alpha and beta
# releases, too.

# deb http://deb.opera.com/opera-beta/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (beta releases)

Note: Make sure you set the line to "stable" even if you use testing or unstable, otherwise you may receive the warning "W: Conflicting distribution: deb.opera.com" on issuing apt-get update.

Just to be precise I just want Opera 12, I don't like the newer versions

I already tried before with that line "deb http://deb.opera.com/opera stable non-free", because I found some article on internet, but it tells (google translated)

Code:
Unable to retrieve http://deb.opera.com/opera/dists/stable/Release not find the "non-free / source / Sources" in the Release file (sources.list entry incorrect or corrupted file)
Unable to download some index files: will be ignored, or old ones will be used.

I am using 12.16.  Are there many major changes between this and whatever is current?  I was just about to step out for a bit.  Maybe I can try to assist later, but I suspect that I am still using an old version because of issues like what you are running into, and I never cared enough to fix it.

Then don't disconnect bluetooth. :p

If you like Opera, it will remain forever version 12.x, after that it is just not Opera anymore... it is now based on chromium, and it lost EVERY SINGLE USEFUL FUNCTIONS it has, they are trying to add something here and there, but it is pratically dead as the browser it was.

I'm following with interest another fan project still not mature, based on chromium too, but they are really trying to replicate the Opera 12 experience with that newer engine: http://otter-browser.org/

It turns out 12.16 is the current version for Linux.  As I said, I will check what I have later, and see if it is working.  I was sure I had seen some errors about opera when checking for other updates.

I will look into otter a bit more when I have time.  Thanks.

I guess I missed the period of time between the late 90's and today where Opera was good.

Spent some time doing research about the Bluetooth freeze, and seems it is a well known bug present from the 2008 on ALL the distributions based on Debian... Mint and Ubuntu are not safe from this...

The only ones that "solved" the issue started using Blueman instead of the others interfaces... anyway I used Bluman from the beginning and this didn't saved me from the freeze...

I'm trying to find a "working combination" of the bluetooth installed packets, hoping for the better...

anyway all this story really suck... I still have to reboot to Windows every time I need to use the Bluetooth... :(

EDIT: Oh, by the way I solved the problem related to the Opera repo, seems like Synaptic add automatically the entry "deb-src http://deb.opera.com/operastable non-free" even for repos without the source present, so I deleted that line manually from source.list and all started working :)

Found another problem... Flash doesn't work in every browser I tried o_O

for now I'm using JDownloader as a workaround, but should be cool to make it work

Well, did you /install/ Flash? :)

It isn't by default.
Flash (Adobe) is there, installed from the repo, the browsers just tells that the plugin crashed... I also tried the open one, gnash (?) but nothing changed...

gnash now it's working, the adobe test page find it, but it is unable to play things from many sites, seems like unsupported functions from newer versions of flash...

Seems that the crash of the adobe plugin can be corrected using the right nvidia drivers... but while trying to install them i did a little mess, and X wasn't starting anymore so I removed everything

Flash 10.3 seems working without crashes, anyway I found out something strange, both this and Gnash doesn't show some flash videos, I can only hear the audio of them !! o_O

Searching on internet was of no help, seems like everyone has the opposite problem, video is working but not the audio...

I didn't think Gnash was even looking at supporting lots of features, last time I looked, so it's no great surprise stuff doesn't work in it.

Flash mostly works for me, at least in youtube and liveleak, which is all I really need it for. Hopefully with the latest Firefox supporting HTML5 video better on my system, I won't even need it for those much longer.

Gnash does have wip as3 support, but it is disabled by default, probably because it doesn't work well :)

But unless someone picks this up that wont change. IMO it is a little sad because quite a lot does already work. It mostly requires testing and tweaking. The only big drawback is that there is no JIT.

As far as I see the things that are working with Gnash seems faster than with the Adobe player.

Anyway there are some pages where both are doing exactly the same wrong thing, and I still can't understand what's happening...

I hear the sound of the video, but I can't find the video object in the page, surely it is not where it should be, I click everywhere but there is no Flash menu... and in the source of the pages itself all the embedding instructions don't contain swf things... o_O

Maybe it is because of some javascript hell...

I also found out that Chrome just refuses to run on my system because "We are sorry but we don't support old machines anymore"... I thought they had another politic on the matter, I was wrong... I can understand not supporting old Windows, but here the libraries are all updated...

This sounds like a html5 video (instead of a flash video) for which the video codec is missing in the browser. But I may be totally wrong with this diagnosis.

I tried on Windows and it's a Flash video, but it have an advertise video with a countdown at the beginning, with a random AD... I suppose that's the source of the problems...

EDIT: indeed the problem are the methods they are using to put ADs before the videos... every site working like that doesn't show the video... on one site the ADs are not always shown, it's random, so I reloaded the page until I had just the video itself, and I had no problem watching it.
