My Retrode 2 just arrived! :D

Major props for the Teen Girl Squad reference. I must concur, though - moz, I am thoroughly weirded out. Why would anyone operate a Retrode with their feet?!

Anyway, with that said, and continuing with the Teen Girl Squad references... LET'S GET READY TO LOOK SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD!!

Here's my Retrode 2. It's on purple felt instead of white this time, because this is what I've got out for my current spare-time sewing project (the one that I mentioned in The Communication Cube in Off Topic a while back). :p

First ever use! The game is Rockman 7 - Shukumei no Taiketsu! (the Japanese version of Mega Man 7, literally, "Rockman 7 - The Destined Showdown!" - all of the Japanese releases in the Classic series have a subtitle, whilst the Western ones do not) for the SNES, as that was what was closest to hand at the time, it's one of my favourite games in the Mega Man series, and I wanted to test a SNES game first, it being my favourite console of all time. (Note also the return of the cassette tape USB hub, next to my Pandora, there. :p )

A close-up of the first demo that the game runs if you don't press Start at the title screen.

Testing the Mega Drive side, now, this is Rockman Mega World (the marginally easier-to-find Japanese version of Mega Man: The Wily Wars). This game is interesting in that it uses Serial EEPROM for its save files. The Retrode did not seem to bring my saves in, unfortunately, meaning that I will have to suffer through the nightmarishly buggy, reprogrammed versions of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3, in order to unlock Wily Tower, a unique game exclusive to this cartridge, which plays better because it was built around the buggy game engine and its problems. :p

The starting point in Cut Man's level in the first game on the compilation, in all its weird-looking glory.

I'm afraid I haven't tried it out with any controllers yet, as I couldn't lay my hands on my SNES one when I came to take these pictures, and the only MD one I have is for taking up the second joystick port on my Supergun (which is currently in storage) because it misbehaves without it there (I find MD pads to be quite horrible to use, and don't have any spares anymore, as I got rid of my Multi-Mega a while ago). :p

Also, my apologies for the dire photography - my camera decided that it only wanted to take bad pictures today.

Got mine today, gearing up to do a picture extravaganza and crank out a review for Gadgetoid.

It's a fantastic piece of kit, really a cut above the Retrode 1 in terms of functionality and ease of use; it has accessible reset/detect buttons for starters! And an LED to give you some idea of what it's doing.

I have to say, though, I like the Retrode 1 a lot. The whole "Gold Brick" style, and solid metal construction really does it for me.

The Retrode 2 is surprisingly large, far bigger than I expected. Of course its width is limited by the size of the cartridge slots.

I love the new black board, it makes me want to leave the case off; it looks so puurrrdy!

The Retrode 2 will connect directly to a jailbroken iPad 2 and work without any USB hub. Pretty nifty!

I'm petitioning Matthias to add full iCade support, so we can use Megadrive controllers on the iPad... that'd be truly awesome.

Just seen the new update for retrode, with a chance to win a transparent orange model, new metallic blue models, if I had the spare cash I'd definitely go for the blue.

I'm waiting for the Game Boy cartridge adapter, myself. :D I want to do some messing with the Game Boy Camera like in the old days, and it seems like the most practical way of retrieving the save files containing the pictures from the device, in order to convert them into a usable format.

Has anyone heard anything about those adapters as of late? (There's even a picture of them on the third birthday competition page.)

And, on that note: Happy Birthday, Retrode! :D

Ok, I have had my eye on, and would likely have finally purchased next week, the RetroN 3.

http://hyperkin.com/retron-3-charcoal-gray.html/

I want it to play my NES/SNES/Megadrive carts on, preserving my original consoles, and of course space saving.

Is this Retrode2 better than the RetroN3?

...I'm suspecting possibly due to the F/W upgrades.

The Retrode2 offers more via the 'plugins' right?

...If I can "also" play my Atari2600 and SMS carts, major bonus!

...How much do you pay extra for these plugins?

...Can someone please explain these plugins, are they things I buy and just work out-the-box, or is it involving some work?

It's the eagle files on this page: http://www.retrode.org/plug-in-adapters/ that are concerning me, are they just the images as shown to the right in GIF form?

I think I need to get me one of these if so, ASAP

Just been looking on YT and Gadgetoid, was that your video of few months back showing this hooked up to a Jailbroke iPad?

Can this be done on Android tab too or only ipad with the icade thingy?

Tell me it is so, please let it be so..

The RetroN3 plays NES, Genesis and SNES cartridges on the screen (so it's basically a clone of these machines), whereas the Retrode2 is basically a cart reader for your classic cartridges which allow you to legally copy your cartridges onto your PC (or SD Card) to play them using emulators.

Totally different system, I sell both in my shop though.

You could copy your whole SNES/Genesis collection onto SD Cards using the Retrode2 and play it on the RetroN3 using an Everdrive :D

I haven't tested it myself, but I'm pretty sure it'll work with basically anything that

a) You can connect a USB device to

B) Supports USB keyboards outright ( Android does, doesn't it? )

or

c) Supports the iCade "protocol" ( A bunch of Android apps do, dont they? )

The iCade thing is mainly a kludge to get around the fact that an iPad can't support much out of the box. It's effectively just emulating a USB keyboard but with some protocol considerations to make using it for gaming a little less painful. You can probably straight-up use USB keyboard mode with Android, but I'm not sure.

Using SNES and Megadrive controllers, no matter the protocol, is hugely cool though :D

As for the Retrode plug-in adaptors, just wait for the official, pre-assembled ones in cases. I bought a kit once and failed miserably to solder the GBA port on :(

The poll on Retrode.org suggests that each plug-in will cost somewhere in the region of €25 or $35. It's not cheap, but it'll be good quality, straightforward and, at the end of the day, you're supporting the greater good!

With an Arduino Leonardo or Teensy 2.0 you could easily hack up a Gamecontroller->USB adaptor and use whatever protocol you like. I'm thinking of attempting this myself at some point. Ultimately this is how the Retrode started out!

How cool would a multitap be, hacked up with a USB connector :D

Ok thanks guys, I will have to double check about the USB k/board on Android tablets, I think it may depend on the tablet model itself, I'll test one on my tablet and if so, have to invest in one of these and those swish looking plug-ins when available too.

I think the RetroN3 needs to be purchased, guess they offer full game saves on the 3 systems it runs. This could be a pay day purchase.

With these weighing in at around 1.7kg a Zone1 shipping to UK would be 17EUR on top of the ~70EUR right Ed?

You have stock? Site says out. gp2x.com one yeah?

http://shop.gp2x.de, I'm out of stock right now, already reordered, but that will take about 2 weeks (I get them from US).

17 EUR are the shipping costs, yeah.

I use my powerbase converter for my master system games, but I'd like to get me an N64 adaptor (he said something about the control adaptors being made so big bonus).
