a recent thread made me think about my parents.

They are nice people and such, but...

they are the kind of people that use computers to do banking, and mail lolcats

i have a suggestion for a new pandora product at the end of this story

my dad bought a 350 € 12MP sony digital camera last year

he was really proud, so he took lots of pictures

but then he wanted to share them with his brother ...

his mail program kept saying ugly things, mostly because he tried to send emails with 80 2MB jpeg files attached

i tried to explain the concept of resolution and resizing, but this is the kind of guy that has a notebook with lists of handwritten instructions of where to click if he has to do something "challenging" like make a zip file.

so i look in the camera settings, i see the resolution goes down to 800x600 and i tell him: try this, your pictures will fit on your monitor.

he's been delighted with his camera ever sindce

so craig if you want to get rich:

produce a camera and the only setting you can change should be: fill 1/2 screen vs fill entire screen

For god sakes Jim! It's a portable gaming computer, not a telecommunicator!

I fear that there is only a small generation who grew up with computers in the 80s/90s who understand what resolution is - the current youth generally won't, and those too old won't. It's not just resolution either, file size, different CPU architecture, battery size etc.

It's going to be a difficult tech future as people understand less and less again, until all they know is how to log in to facebook (or whatever is the new thing in a couple of years).

Gads!

i'd argue that when people don't have to know about resolution, file size, different cpu architecture then "we" have done our jobs well. I shouldnt have to know about file resolution and size versus compression ratios and different file types. I should be able to take a picture and the system know what file size or type is needed for the job i am trying to do with it.

Just as the first cars didnt have the pedals in the same place as today's car and tomorrow's car will probably fly (yeah right!) we have to remember that we are still dealing with a hugely complex, huge range of devices that are still like the first auto-mobile in terms of user interface and takeup in the general population.

may i remind you, that you need to study hard, get a license and lots of experience to be able to drive a car well. You don't hear people saying: "my car drove in that wall by itself"

people expect comuters to just work for the bigest dumbasses that exists. You do hear people saying: "that porn dialer installed itself"

you could argue that porn dialers do install themselves (badly maintained windows), but badly maintained cars (broken brakes or so) do drive themselves in walls as well, nobody considers this to be gravity's fault, that's the owners fault, it's illegal to drive with broken brakes.

you either learn to use them properly or you could pray to the invisible man and ask why your dell is trying to kill you

EDITED for clarity

That's pessimistic.

I'm 14 years old, most of my classmates haven't got a clue of anything like that.

They call themselves "hackers" (especially one, he thinks he is a great hacker, but everything which isn't easy, like C oder assembly or hex editing is boring shit, a real hacker doesn't care about such stuff) and all they can is playing games and download stupid little viruses.

For parents, I understand why they don't get such stuff, they just didn't grew up with it - but I don't understand people the same age as me, why don't they know anything about computers?

Maybe they are not interested, or never found any use in it. Most of them are not willing to put any effort in the direction of technology and thats their good right, as well as we who put a lot of effort into it.

Some people just like to play soccer or play a guitar instead of sitting behind a computer.

And people tend to do on a computer what they think is usefull and for most its text edditing, chatting and maybe patience.

And thats not a shame! I can't play a guitar and I can't play soccer you don't hear anybody complain about that.

With all due respect my friend, if you're 14 then I could be your dad and I'm 31! I've always avoided hex editing and coding because it never interested me, but I was into just about everything else. I used to love editing files to get dos games working properly.

Everyone that can take something and make it do something else on a computer can be called a computer hacker and that should be applauded. There's to little of those people these days.

however, being able to make sense of something like this: http://www.de.ioccc.org/2004/anonymous.c is rather good for growing your e-penis  (euh, hat in case of hackers :p ) before you ask, i haven't the slightest idea what that app does, but it is valid C

Hex editing was just an example, if I can I avoid it too - but someone who calls himself a hacker should at least know what it is. Maybe someone don't have to be able to program stuff, but he should know what programming is - basically writing stuff down in a language the computer (or the compiler) understands.

Do you get my point? In my opinion they should know the very basics of something they use every day.

@bosbeetle: Yeah, as I wrote as an answer to Sugar_Kane before, I don't think they should be pros, but they should know at least a little - as you can kick a ball around too (just not as good as people in it).

If you use something very often, (me at least - don't seams to be normal) you want to know how it works.

For example I know roughly how a car works (I know how it works in the gist, what happens in the engine to make it run, how gears work, and so on), although I'm absolutely not interested in cars - why don't they know how a computer works about as roughly as I know how cars works?

Edit:

With all due respect my friend, if you're 14 then I could be your dad and I'm 31!
I wish I didn't write how old I am, I should have known that some idiots would stop taking me seriously.

I got your point, jeremy. My point was that you mention parents not understanding things because they didn't grow up with, thus me illustrating that I am a parent, and indeed could be YOUR parent, and I do understand such things, which is merely an observation and should not be taken as a smiting of your point.

As regards to age, being taken seriously, and idiots; I don't think anyone here would give a shiny brown loaf how old you are, unless you wanted to start telling us how the world works that is. So, I sincerely hope that you weren't calling me an idiot. Now dance with me, you handsome fool.

Ah, now I get your point too. :)

No, in this case I wasn't calling you an idiot, I was only calling every guy an idiot who doesn't take me seriously 'cause I'm not as old as some else. That would be stupid. and I hate it

That was a misunderstanding, I didn't want to say that someone who didn't grew up with computers can't understand them, of course someone older can understand such things too, but if someone has to learn it as an adult he has to put much more effort into it.

Partly it's of course also depending on if someone is talented or not.

And actually I would say someone who is 30 grew up with it - when you were a child there were computers, for example the Amiga existed (don't know much about specific computers before I was born, just looked up when the Amiga was released)

I got your point' date=' [i']jeremy.
???

Edit: Why does this damned quote doesn't work? ^^
