Release ISO Optical Drive

Wow Thx thatgui, then normaly CD Images are no Problems.

Cool then no Problem.

When you make that Update, please write here in,i need actualy for my

Linux , XP Install or 2000 or Win98SE Install

on other Computers this.

Superb that you found out how its going :)

Then i never need in Future a CD Drive for Installing Operating Systems. :D

After some trials with different kind of software I think I'm near to a working solution to boot with ISO, but It doesn't need a Pandora at all... so maybe I will post the result in another section... (anyway maybe I will be able to make some script to create it with a Pandora)

With the Pandora I was in a seemingly working situation installing Plop in an SD and using mass storage... but I found instead a good way to lock BOTH my PC and the Pandora at the same time... It was the first time ever I needed to remove the battery of my PC to turn it off...

Wow you must do a CMOS Reset?

Because a USB Device?

Maybe you have found out a PC Bios Bug.

I am curious about your next Steps.

Thx for trying together after whats happend. ;)

I am curious about your next Steps.
I know that the Plop boot manager can run ISO, and can be run itself from a USB stick... the only part I never tried is to use a ISO on the SAME STICK with the bootloader... but maybe I will play a bit with this in the weekend...

About ISO Optical Drive we need to wait for another kernel update to see if something changes...

thought it might help a bit :p
You mounted the image 2 times, what happened the first time ? Wasn't working anymore ?

I just noticed something interesting in that dmesg:

Code:
[ 1628.893798]  gadget: NOTE: This driver is deprecated.  Consider using g_mass_storage instead.

I just checked, and we actually have the g_mass_storage module in SuperZaxxon. (it's only in the 3.2 kernel though,  not 2.6, which is why the SD Mass Storage script uses g_file_storage)

Perhaps the newer module will allow you to to boot a machine from an ISO? It's worth a try at least.

If you wanted to make your PND backwards compatible you could perhaps check the kernel version with uname -r and then load g_file_storage for the old kernel or g_mass_storage for the new one.

- Neelix

@Neelix: yes, I was already aware of that and in the script I used for all the trials there's g_mass_storage command, but I didn't see any differences... except for the fact that the warning doesn't show anymore...

A while ago, I made a hackish perl script which did the same thing as your app, except I used it exclusively for booting pcs.

I lost the script, but I remember having problems on one of the kernels, probably the 2.6 one, and one of the modules was not working for me, I don't remember if it was g_file_storage or g_mass_storage. I do remember the warning in dmesg, and g_mass_storage was a bit faster.

The options I used was ro=1 removable=1 cdrom=1 file=/asd.iso

I was booting a lot of machines, mostly from P4s to Core2duo, mostly Red Hat and some Windows XP, so it's definitively possible.

I'll see if i can find the script and dump it somewhere if you want to have a look, but it wasn't really that usable.

I already tried those options without good results... anyway I don't remember exactly all the kernel and command combinations, I will try again, good to know it was working, if you find the script can be useful indeed :)

EDIT: Just tried with last kernel, g_mass_storage and your options AAAAND ... nothing... Windows started and found a CD rom :(

Hi ,we have now a newer Kernel, maybe you can Boot with this one ;)

I love your Project, installed last Time Descent 3 with your Project ^_^

It would be nice when you can boot Linux and install (example) Linux Mint/Ubuntu/Knoppix/Debian from it :)

Actually I just made an easy to use script and PNDized it, but the main program was already present as a kernel function, that's the reason why I wasn't able to do anything to debug the issue...

I will do some try in the next days, this can really be an awesome functionality. :)

Just to update this thread, because of the newer kernel, some days ago I tried again to use an iso image as a boot device, but still failed to load...

I think the problem is still the same, the gadget doen't have the right CD rom device header for the BIOS... so as usual it works only after an OS is loaded, seems like the OS doesn't mind of that header.

I'll take a look at it once back to Soleil dev (i'm currently reworking it, not adding new features).

I have a lot of different PC, so maybe some will work.
