I'm new to this board...hello everybody. I have a few questions.

How do I tell the difference between a 166 mhz and one that haven't been overclocked?

I saw one today in the UK....It's been used before...He said it was a blu....I wouldn't know for sure or not...I'm new to this handheld and thought it would be awesome for emulators..how do I know the difference or not? it was back lit.....is that one of the different things the blu & flu has?

could it be a flu version...How can you tell between the two?

I saw it for £76, is that a good price for this handheld?

Oh...I did see Doom running on it too...

thanks

BLU means it's a back-lit unit, so it was definitely a Blu. You can't tell the clock speed with testing the machine out though, so it could just be a 133mhz max model.

Probably worth £76 though, the unmodified ones for for about £100 brand new. Was there an smc or anything else packed with it?

You can see how far it can overclock using Doom...
At the beginning it asks you what speed you want to run it at.
If it can run @ 166mhz then it is a 166mhz model...

No card...just a usb cable. are smc pretty cheap? I saw them today ata few moblie phone stores today, but didn't look at the price. I thought it used MMC.

I'm thinking of getting it, but have to know what emu's run good with sound with just the 133mhz gp32?

thanks for the reply :)

For that price it is probably a FLU. Was there a small button on the back to turn off the light? If so it is a FLU. The colors aren't as good as a BLU but at that price it is still probably worth it.

http://www.ebuyer.com is good for cheap smcs. You can get free delivery if you are prepared to wait a few more days for them to arrive. Alternatively someone mentioned that Currys are selling 128mb smcs at £9.99 but only instore.

Well, SMC should be around 30€ (that's 128Mb SMC, i don't know what's that in pounds, sorry. Could be 20). About emus: well, there is quite a number of emus around that are good. IIRC, there mus be a "best emus" thread pinned somewhere.

If it will go to 144 MHz then everything 8-bit including Megadrive will run fullspeed with sound.

128 MB SMCs are around 9 pounds from what I have heard if you hunt around.

Yes...it had a button on the top....it;'s a flu! damn it
The button for the light is at the back not the top. The on/off switch and shoulder buttons are on top.

For the price I think it's still a good deal. You're talking double that for a Blu from GBAX.

FLU/BLU only refer to the light. The CPU is the same in both.

I have made a picture of my FLU unit; note the switch that shows that it's a FLU:

For76, I suppose you should take it if you want a GP32. You can see if it overclocks only if you run a program on it, there's no way to tell without using actually using it; mine does about 150 and most programs run great. SNES is kind of a problem (you won't get full speed and sound, believe me), but usually playable without sound.

EDIT: By the way: FLU means FRONT LIT UNIT and BLU means BACK LIT UNIT.

If it is the flu version.....what emu's run at 100% with good sound with that system.

flu is only the type of lighting the gp uses. There are three types (well, four actually) of gp's:

flu (front lit unit- colors with the light on are washed out, though it still looks pretty good. Also playable in natural light)

non-lit (No lighting is employed, so you must play in direct light)

blu (back lit unit- colors are vibrant, making games much clearer. when i switched from a flu to a blu i couldn't believe my eyes. huge difference. It is, however, NOT playable in direct sunlight.

blu+ (this is the fourth type. esentially the same as a blu, but with a different screen (the provider for lcd's cahnged and this is the result). Some apps and programs were not compatable with this, though thanks to the devs, most have been fixed to work one this type.

So...if theres' no button on the top... it's then a blu, but if it has a button it's a flu.

No, it can just be a non-lit unit. You should def try out the gp in the store if you can as this handheld is very niche product; the owner may not even know all the differences between the units.

edit: in terms of clockspeed, 156 is a good setting, you can get some great results with that. I own a 166, and its is certainly preferred, especially when running osnes and dr.md (the snes and mega drive emu's)

Non Lit Unit (Nlu) Has no light at all and no button on the back

Front lit Unit (Flu) Has a white light border around the screen and a button on the back to switch the light on and off.

Back lit Unit (Blu) Has a light just like most pocket pc`s and laptop with the light distributed evenly across the screen, There is no button the back of this unit, You have to press and hold the select button for around three seconds to turn the light on and off.

Hope this helps.
