I can almost, with 90% certainty saythat the p2 should use an amd apu!

The reason that you're "not getting much resistance" is that just about everyone has given up on your threads already. "A monstercameron thread on hardware? *ignore*". This neverending parade of misinformation and inability to understand gets old, youknow.
I dont believe I misinformed anyone, show me one fact that I have lied about?

^ Okay, thank you for your honesty.

So this website is a place for you to dream and share ideas about what you want - in a future device then?  Maybe some of it is just the entertainment and interaction of ideas.  No harm then....I was just curious.  Sometimes I almost lose it when I see your "sensationalistic posts" and I have to bite my tongue, but I get it - in a weird way.

Edit 1:  If you're "not really interested interested in the p2", (as you say) then why even bother posting your ideas in a P2 thread?  Surely you can create your own off-topic thread concerning your own ideas on another dream device.  It almost comes across as disingenuous (to me at least) when you feign interest in something that admittedly you're not interested in in the first place....and that's your own words...about a hypothetical device that isn't even on the drawing board(s) yet...

Well, I said that I thanked you for your honesty and I do.  Good luck with all of this palaver... May you eventually seek what you want....er, and find it.  PEACE.
dont want to spam regular forums with something like that and you act like anything discussed in this sunforum is law or that popular vote will decide the future of the p2, You want a 5" 1080p screen, he wants an oled screen, someone else wants a brightness and volume toggle wheel etc we are all projecting our ideal p2, I just want an amd apu in mine...
That's a fundamental change - moving from ARM to x86.  I hadn't really thought about how it would affect the community - that level of change.  A screen is just a display...an audio wheel or a slider is just a variation upon a theme here, but what you're suggesting has far more repercussions than even you might realize...or maybe you do, but I didn't.  I'm fine with the Pandora 2 being ARM-based and being as power-efficient as possible.  Maybe the programmers of tomorrow are also thinking along the same lines... I guess we'll have to see.  I'd rather keep the legacy (warts and all) of the Pandora intact and let it grow to it's natural fruition than to see another misstep.  Thank you, Monstercameron, for making me think.  I'm not sure that I would've seen this scenario for a while.
I was expecting much more resistance...question do you think the devs would use the same software on a newer system, would they just port amstrong to the new system or would they go a little up market to something like bodhi w/ e17? what would be the state of the software with much better hardware?

aside: just to further a point my c-50 netbook can work on the latest kernels because of the r600 foss drivers gfx acceleration, something that isn't possible with p1 and if the p2 goes pvr omap 5 -a15- then the p2 would rely on ti for new drivers and support. AMDs fglrx might suck but they do support a foss driver.
i was replying to franko when he gave me that reply...before which he was saying it was another crazy thread etc, that was what I was referring to, please moxie read the whole thread... it aint that long...

Buy a Pandora....or the Zombies will attack...Ughhhhhhh!!!!!

No, but seriously, be you, but it's just not that interesting anymore, monstercameron...that's a well-thought out name BTW, it makes even more sense now....but seriously, why tell people that you wouldn't buy a P2?  You don't even know what it could be and you're shooting it down - that's what clinical psychologists call "crazy".

It's fine, I like this guy....at least somebody thinks outside of the box...not that all of us don't...but I saw Monstercameron thinking outside of the box when he was supposed to think inside of the box, and now I'm worried, he might have been tainted.....

I need to talk him down from the ledge of that box.  He's up really high.

Monstercameron!   Can you see me?  I'm the guy that said that you weren't interesting!  Obviously I was wrong!   (where are the helicopters?)...

"I can almost, with 90% certainty saythat the p2 should use an amd apu!"

I can almost, with 100% certainty saythat that's just like your opinion man.

Oh good, ParadisoShlee is here...here, grab the controls of this helicopter - I'm trying to reach monstercameron.

You're only hurting your family and my voice!!!!  Can I call you monster or cameron?

I'll buy a pandora 2 when they use the almighty apu... :p
There was another guy posting about making an x86 handheld, why don't you join forces with him?

Your statement there indicates that you don't understand people's interest in the current generation of Pandora. I highly recommend posting in Other Consoles, as to me this proposal in reality has nothing to do with a second iteration.

^  Amen to that.  I've run out of my daily quota of like's but I like that sensible response, bismuthdrummer.

Outside of arguing with Hourglass - oooops, Overgassy....ooopps, well you know, I've enjoyed your posts for years - just recently you've been a bit quiet, but I'm a fan of this great device and of a select few people that (at least I) thought I knew...that is rarely transferable.

If the P2 does not come out until 2015 or so (probably likely), it is feasible that an Intel SOC by then may exceed the best ARM Soc's performance and power consumption wise .

If that's the case , and in a few years time we are finally seriously looking at a P2 and the best SOC on that market is an Intel chip - would everyone still be so adamant about using an ARM Soc?.

I don't have any preferences between Intel or ARM , but it is a interesting question

Here's an interesting link on Intels plans for mobile SOC's:

I doubt it.

Silvermont is the name of the CPU core alone, but when it shows up in tablets later this year it will do so as a part of the Baytrail SoC and a part of the Merrifield SoC next year in smartphones.

22nm
To really understand the Silvermont story, you need to first understand Intel’s 22nm SoC process. Two years ago Intel announced its 22nm tri-gate 3D transistors, which would eventually ship a year later in Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors. That process wasn’t suited for ultra mobile. It was optimized for the sort of high performance silicon that was deployed on it, but not the ultra compact, very affordable, low power silicon necessary in smartphones and tablets. A derivative of that process would be needed for mobile. Intel now makes two versions of all of its processes, one optimized for its high performance CPUs and one for low power SoCs. P1270 was the 22nm CPU process, and P1271 is the low power SoC version. Silvermont uses P1271. The high level characteristics are the same however. Intel’s 22nm process moves to tri-gate non-planar transistors that can significantly increase transistor performance and/or decrease power.

Intel is going to use this technology and it's going to be miniaturized and can fit within our case I think.

I'm still for keeping our existing architecture.   I'm just looking at things.  Maybe Cameron is also.  Maybe he neeeds to drop the monster and the sensationalistic headlines as well.

Well I can explain more in private messages if you like. I appreciate your forthrightness though, thanks.

Sure, I'd be less adamant. Actually I've had a bit of a thing for the UMID SE when they were still sold on ebay half a year ago or so... I'm only stuck on ARM because the smartest guys here have good sounding arguments for it. Hell, I didn't even know it existed before I found the Open Pandora. (What the hell is OMAP? SoC? etc.)

EDIT: Well, and I'd prefer the OP2 to have some measure of compatibility with OP1's software. Obviously an arch change completely destroys any hope of that.

compatibility shouldn't be a problem, compiling to x86 vs cross compiling to arm shouldn't be a problem for devs or packages...

So every dev has to recompile every PND for the new hardware? Really?

over 900 software packages shouldnt take too long to recompile, some wouldnt even need to be compiled, grab ff, chromium, codeblocks or libreoffice from someone elses repos or straight from a tar.gz...

besides with every new rev and bug fix they have to recompile the software...

Pretty weak argument. If cross-compiling is a problem for you, then might I suggest ptitSeb's port of CodeBlocks. The Pandora can compile code too, dontcha know. ;)

Seriously though, have you got any links of devs complaining about this? Cross-compilation's not exactly uncommon when developing for mobile.......... nor is it all that difficult with the proper toolchain.

Well if you'll volunteer to do that, then who am I to complain?
