How Much Would Emulators Cost?

You might want to read this article from my website: http://ggrpg.com/view/the_reality_of_paten...e_nes/1767.html

What has that got to do with the hundreds (thousands) of games/roms released into the public domain for the amiga, ST, C64, Spectrum, GBC etc?

-Craig
It's just saying that it's still illegal even though some people claim it to be totally abandonware'd by now.

Again, what has that got to do with the hundreds (thousands) of games/roms released into the public domain for the amiga, ST, C64, Spectrum, GBC etc? How are the illegal exactly?

Copyright infringement.

Do you actually understand the words 'Released into the public domain'?
So they are freeware then  ? Always thought they were illegal to download. Why doesn't fileplanet or gamespot have a rom section then?

PiratSS, if you own the original carts, it is legal to download the roms of the game off the sites.

That's what the "disclaimer" is for. = )

If an author to a game that still owns rights to it, he/she may do whatever the hell they want with it. Most of the authors of the past retro consoles (eg C64) have released their games to Public Domain which means it is legally free to distrubute them.

A good example would be Rockstar releasing GTA 1 and 2 for free, while they haven't released the rights to it, they are making it freely distributable.

When it comes to the later consoles or special cases like the NES, the whole ROM area becomes gray and downloading them depends on individual morals/beliefs. Most fall under, "If you cant buy it anymore commercially, then it should be free".

Learn from this, people. Somebody explain the emu basics on the GP2X Wiki (or have they already?) anyway, I'm not going to do it as I have less boring things to do.

Ditto i'm busy watching compile log from
Code:
emerge -u world
with ffast-math...looking forward to bug reports now!

Actually under UK law you're only allowed one workable copy. "workable" is a vague term though, can mean the cart is unplayable or could mean your console isn't set up.

Destroy your original copy then. Go on! You know you want to.

I think its probably worth mentioning project like free doom/open quartz

PratSS is trying to be funny ,I think he feels hes the voice of reason.
CraigX has over the years compiled emulator rom cds containing only
roms that have been approved for public release , which involved lots of
hard work , so dont tar the whole emulator scene with the same brush.

Don't want to rain on your parade guys, but all roms that are not public domain or homebrew are illegal. :( Even though you are allowed a backup of a game you already own, this backup must be in the same form of media as the original. So you could make a backup of an NES game, for example, if you flashed the original game directly to another blank cartridge. Having roms of games you own is close to being legal so there is no reason to get too worried. Emulators on the other hand are 100% legal. You can play any PD or homebrew rom on an emulator without breaking any laws. I am pretty sure however it is illegal to sell emulators. I'm not too sure how it would work for GP2X emulators though.

To keep it short heres how it goes.. lol

Emulators arent illegal. Thus they can be sold. They arent sold though because the authors know they will be downloaded anyways

Roms are illegal, thus they cannot be sold, allthough i see DVD's of them on ebay all the time. So what if i download roms? im not going to get caught by the 'internet police' :p

Just download roms.. and emus its like downloading anime or movies, its illegal but so what? No one cares exept for the people who produced em haha.

Silly!
