How GTA changed game worlds

If one were to take a survey of gamers, I think about 80% of those gamers have played 3 or more GTA games. Out of those 80% of gamers, I'd be surprised 20% of them ever finished a GTA game. So there's an argument to be made if open world games a better or not...

Huh ?? It's not like GTA3 invented anything at all !

Look at RPGs like Ultima7 in early 90s, it simulated a whole living world, way more complex that GTA, and you had total freedom to explore it.

Same for the Elder Scrolls series, many years before GTA.

This guy is just behing very ignorant to credit GTA for this. Sandbox games have existed for DECADES.

But GTA3 had the cooler vehicles than Ultima and Elder Scrolls... and it had Rocket Launchers, never forget the Rocket Launchers!!!  ;)

To be honest, I wanted a cool Open World Game where you can do everything since I've watched the "Californication" Music Video from the Red Hot Chili Peppers years before GTA3 was released. :)

At this time it was pure fiction, today such games exist up to full destructible environments, pretty impressive imho.

I never finished it, but I had a lot of fun in GTA 4. But I did finish Vice City and 3 both on my phone :)
